Well, I think we've all noticed the confusion about Mari and Shinji's interpretation of the ending, some think they got together romantically (me), others think they're just close friends and others say she just takes care of him. There was also a huge increase in her fan base and it makes sense, she fought EVA very well, recreated the world and Anno chose her to be with Shinji. Best girl. This movie single handily changed my top 1 in Eva from Rei to Mari. The final scene with one last kiss playing will be top 5 for me for a long time.

You need to be the new kind of slow if you did not interpreted that ending of those two characters in any other than romantic way.

Yes they did imo. Though it saddens me as I would like Shinji to end up with Asuka, like in EoE. Original Asuka is the best girl. :)

I don’t mind Mari at all it’s just she barely had screentime outside of action and nothing she did was hugely interesting. I don’t see how Mari can overtake Rei and Asuka who got hours of screentime showing who they are, their backstories, and why they are interesting. If anything I thought this movie would solidify Rei as best girl or convert someone to Rei because her arc was the best part of the movie imo.

They did not. Their VA also said that their relationship is not romantic. It's probably like what Asuka said that Shinji needs a mother and not a lover. Mari can also be interpreted as a guide for Shinji or just up to your own interpretation.

I just saw this documentary and there is nothing to confirm that it would be like a mother to Shinji, if we were to base ourselves that Mari would be the one inspired by Anno's wife, then the meaning would be loving care, someone who would give her love, that would always be by her side, at any time, she never mentions that it would be something like a mother would do, but rather like someone who chose to live by her side.

I'm not sure if you're asking whether or not it happened, or whether or not it should have happened.

It seems pretty clearly that yes, it did happen, which is one of the reasons why this movie is pretty much garbage considering Mari herself is a mary sue with no arc or character development (or really any flaws at all) and only exists to be fanservice, shoot things, and be perfect in every way so Shinji will end up with her. Focusing on her so much in the climax of the movie after 2.5 movies of doing next to nothing is bad writing.

I really loved seeing shinji happy with her at the end of the movie, but I would have liked her to have the same development as Asuka and Rei, or at least to tell more about her or show her feelings, like, besides doing some things To move the plot, the character was hardly important and felt out of place compared to the others, I have many problems with her, I would like to see an ova or something similar that is about her to know her better, but I think that with the little that She showed herself, gave it a good closure and I'm glad that she and shinji are together.

I don't mind having those two a romantic relationship. though there wasn't and I did not carried away just because they've got wholesome screen time in the end.

I saw it in reddit the last time months ago. It's an interview of the VA, probably not part of the documentary. You can just in the subreddit if they can find it for you. I just said that their relationship is like a mother and son based from what Asuka said. It's up to our own interpretation. If I remember it right what was said is that Mari is just teasing Shinji.

I'm glad Shinji and Asuka didn't end up together since that would've felt like shallow wish fulfillment. Anno spent a good chunk of EoE showing y'all why they're terrible for each other.

Regardless, I don't have much of a problem with Shinji and Mari ending up together on a fundamental level. It's just that I wish she and her dynamic with Shinji were fleshed out better.
