This topic is for people wondering if they should start off by watching this or jump right into Dragon Ball Z. So i like both Animes i would say they're 2 of my favorite Animes. So let me start off by comparing the Animes a bit.

Power Scaling: So a huge Topic in the Dragon Ball Fandom is Power Scaling and which anime has better Power Scaling in my opinion? I gotta say Dragon Ball has much more balanced Power Scaling than Dragon Ball Z in my opinion. Everyone has his own opinion so if you disagree feel free to share your opinion. But why do i think that this has much more balanced Power Scaling than Dragon Ball Z? Well it's really simple: The characters are much weaker than they are in Dragon Ball Z like im sure even non Dragon Ball Z fans hear about many people talking about how Goku can destroy Universes here, Universes there but well it's the opposite for Dragon Ball they're not even on planet level so it's focusing more into hand to hand combat without having to worry about accidentally destroying the whole earth making the fights a bit more exciting in my opinion.

Animation: This point clearly goes to Dragon Ball Z as you can also watch Dragon Ball Z in 16:9 while Dragon Ball only has 1:1 animation. Also you can watch Dragon Ball Z in 1080p while Dragon Ball is 480p. Now there are some people that enjoy old Animes a lot and i gotta say this Anime is just perfect for people that love old Animes.

Character Development: In my opinion this has much better character development than Dragon Ball Z kid Goku was really funny and it is just fun to see kid Goku go on adventures, make new friends, defeat villains and seeing Goku growing up. So in my opinion Dragon Ball has better character development.

Voice Acting: Both Animes have pretty good voice acting except that it's low quality because they're old Animes.

So which Anime would i recommend to watch first? Well i personally think Dragon Ball because if you skip into Dragon Ball Z you don't know how Goku grew up and won't understand a lot about certain characters such as who Piccolo is. Of course it's your decision if you start off by watching Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z so just start with whatever you want to watch first!

(This Topic might have some misspelling or mistakes in grammar, sorry for that because im not english!)

This is wrong. Both were made for 4:3. Dragon Ball Kai is in 16:9 but it's cropped which is a bad way to do things in my opinion.

Oh sorry i didn't know that but well Dragon Ball Z has 16:9 animation after all so it doesn't really change anything i guess.

It really boils down to if you are a Goku or a Gohan fan. Skip it if you don't care for Goku, otherwise nah.

Dragon Ball does a much better job of making all the characters relevant, in Z pretty much every non saiyan becomes a bit redundant so I wouldn't skip it

This is incorrect. Dragon ball z was animated into a 4:3 frame. Most discs of dbz you can get now adays such as the Funimation remastered boxes cropped the frame into a 16:9 window. This means that both the top and bottom of the image is cut off and you can't change that which means you are losing a lot of the image. However the DBZ Kai blurays don't have it cropped but is in its native 4:3 format which is great but the final chapters have it cut into 16:9.

You can but I really don't recommend it. The OG dragon ball is way better than DBZ and add a lot of depth into characters that makes DBZ feel dull.

You gotta experience ALL of dragon ball from the beginning so you can see the growth and progression of all the characters it is NOT recommended

I agree with this. Skipping Dragon Ball and going straight to DBZ is akin to skipping Naruto and going straight for Naruto Shippuden. Think about it as a single long story.

You definitely can unless you’re a huge Goku fan and want to see his childhood/upbringing. Also if you don’t mind reading manga the DBZ manga is much better and has better pacing, if that’s not your thing tho the anime has great fight scenes and one of the best dubs in anime so still worth the watch just be warned about the pacing lol

Technically yes, but I dont recommend it.. This show is where you're supposed to build a connection with and learn to understand who goku is as a person and why he is that way as well as learning about how he meets certain characters like bulma, krillin, yamcha, puar etc.

I looked it up and it appears that some places chose to air a 4:3 version. That's great I didn't know that.

You can skip to dbz but you Will miss out on around 40% of the story and you Will miss out on alot of things and information and this Will make dbz less enjoyable.

MY Personal favourite in whole Dragon ball Frachise is Drogan ball.
It's amazing adventure of goku and bulma.
But if you really want to watch dragon ball Z, than you can skip it. Dragon ball Z is complete new story line. All you have to do before watching, that just know all characters.

I agree. You miss out on the whole foundation of the franchise by skipping DragonBall and I don't recommend skipping it, yet DBZ does play out in such a way that still makes sense even if you havn't seen Dragonball. I also favor DragonBall over Z. Dragonball has more steeze.
She felt like Heaven, but I'm sure she was in Hell.

one of my friends skipped everything and started with super and he says that he doesn't regret it, i think its fine to skip seasons of dragon ball, but the characters will have less weight to them and you will have to get to know all these new characters without knowing how they met and their previous character developments

if thats fine with you then go ahead

also i think that the original dragon ball is better than Z

It's better to watch first series and then DBZ because then you will know who Piccolo is, how Gohan got his name, what is great ape transformation and more.

Well, you actually can. But believe me, you won't want to. OG Dragon Ball was amazing. They had actual strategies to win fights, plus it had a kind of old school vibe to it which I'm sure you will like. Kid Goku was awesome contrary to popular belief.
He was funny, serious, and smart for his age. Plus, OG Dragon Ball focused more on adventure themed episodes rather than screaming.
And the fights are amazingly good.
Goku vs Roshi, Goku vs Tien and Goku vs Picollo JR. to name a few
