So I plan to watch Steins gate but I'm confused on the order to watch. Also, should I watch the movies or are they not canon?

I was told the movies were not important although steins gate watch order is just steins gate and then if you want to steins gate 0. Although steins gate 0 is basically a different steins gate story path in a sense. Its like the fate series except doesn't give you a migraine trying to understand the watch order
Being human is making mistakes.

Just watch Steins;Gate, and if you like the characters, go onto Steins Gate 0 after watching a special episode called 23B-Missing Link.
There's a non canon movie you can go for after you're done with the series but it fucks up the science. Watch it if you like the female protagonist.

I suggest watching it by release order cause it kinda gives you good understanding of the plot at the end of steins gate 0 that will make you love the series
Steins gate -> dejavu -> the alternative 23 episode ( missing link) -> steins gate 0

Is steins gate 0 basically a retelling of the original?

No it’s a completely different series that takes place on a different timeline to the original.

No not at all. Is is an alternate scenario that was made like 7 years after the original series. Some people will tell you to watch this before the orignal's finale, but don't. They are meant to be watched as individual stories.
The difference is that the original is more focused on the science and thrill, but 0 is more character driven. There's no point watching 0 if you don't like the characters. Make up your mind after you finish the orignal.

Pretty sure it was like you watch first 23 episodes of Steins gate, then all of 0, then go back and watch the last 2 episodes of Steins Gate.

for the first time, watch steins;gate --> steins;gate 0, then movie if you want. I enjoyed the movie, so I would watch it if I were you. the second time j watch it, I'm gonna watch it in chronological order. I think it goes steins gate episodes 1-22, then the ova, episode 23 beta, then steins gate 0, then episodes 23 and 24 of the original steins gate. makes a lot more sense once youve seen it

Steins;Gate > OVA 23b Missing Link > Steins;Gate 0

The Movie is not Canon, but it's good! Watch it after S;G or after Zero.

Steins;Gate 0 is not an "alternative" scenario, don't call it like that, beucause it will confuse OP.

Steins;Gate 0 is a spin-off to Steins;Gate by defintion, and it's a side entry in the Science Adventure series.

Most people gonna say episode 12. Honestly I started liking it at episode 7 but 12 is where you’ll understand what the story is really about.

Steins:Gate -> Steins;Gate OVA (ep. 25 : Egoistic Poriomania) -> Episode 23 β (Open the Missing Link) -> Steins;Gate 0. You can watch the movie after finishing Steins;Gate or Steins;Gate 0, it's a good movie but it's not canon. Also, don't stop watching Steins;Gate in episode 23 as some people are saying, you should watch all the first anime before start watching Steins;Gate 0

uh speaking strictly in terms of the anime and not the VN, 0 directly ties into the story of S;G. That's the whole reason for its existence. It is most definitely an alternative scenario/timeline.
Don't club it in the science adventure series.

I'd hardly recommend anyone who disliked the characters to pick it back up again. But yeah the story is far more hard hitting in the second half.

Watch order :
1. Steins; Gate (episodes 1-22 only)
2. Steins;Gate: Kyoukaimenjou no Missing Link - Divide By Zero
3. Steins;Gate 0 (1-23, all epiosdes)
4. Steins; Gate (23-24 episodes)
5. Steins;Gate: Egoistic Poriomania
6. Gekijouban Steins;Gate: Fuka Ryouiki no Deja vu

These you can watch after watching everything, I don’t exactly know where should they be :
• Steins;Gate 0: Kesshou Takei no Valentine - Bittersweet Intermedio
• Steins;Gate: Soumei Eichi no Cognitive Computing

Go with the Release Order, that's the way Steins;Gate was intended to be watched, don't do the Chronologial Order, this anime was never intended to be watched like that and the Chronologial Order is not even Chronological to begin with, it will just ruin and spoil stuff from the original, also, inserting another slower anime (which is Steins;Gate 0) in the middle of Steins;Gate is bad because you are ruining the pace just to watch a completely different anime from the beginning, just do yourself a favor and don't do it.

Also, the director changed in Steins;Gate 0, the new director was kind of mediocre and failed to "grasp" the things that made Steins;Gate good.

Go with the Release Order:

Steins;Gate 01-24 > Steins;Gate Ova 25 > Steins;Gate Movie > Steins;Gate Ova 23beta > Steins;Gate 0. (The Movie is non-canon but it's still pretty enjoyable)

DEFINITELY RELEASE ORDER YOU WILL POSSIBLY RUIN YOUR ENJOYMENT OF THE SERIES IF YOU WATCH IT IN THIS STUPID CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER PEOPLE ARE SUGGESTING, IT KIND OF RUINED THE SERIES FOR ME tbh.
This anime shit is addictive

Strictly speaking in terms of the anime, 0 is still a spin off, and a side entry to Steins;Gate by definition. It expands on a crucial plot point of the original, this is the very definition of spin offs. And it's not an alternative scenario. Alternative means that you can choose between things, but here you can't choose. 0 is canon, and the events of 0 are the reason that the ending of the original is possible. Hence it's not an alternative choice.

And it's hard to strictly speak in terms of anime, when 0 anime is actually a sequel to 0 VN, not the adaptation of it.

Do not under any circumstances interrupt Steins;Gate with Steins;Gate 0. It's the worst possible advice to be given, and you're only getting it because people are too dim to understand how sequels work.

The order you'll want is by release, like so:

  • Steins;Gate
  • Steins;Gate OVA
  • Steins;Gate Specials (optional)
  • Steins;Gate Movie (optional)
  • Steins;Gate Episode 23β
  • Steins;Gate 0
  • Steins;Gate 0 OVA

Obviously if you want more and in greater detail read the original Visual Novels.

The movie isn't canon but it's worth watching anyway, whilst the specials are just random short collaborations, they're not necessary unless you want to complete every single entry.

Strictly speaking, 23β and onwards are also optional, since they're not crucial to Steins;Gate, so you may finish after just the original series if need be.
Well I for one already loved Lain.
