Can anyone explain why Ishida's sister (or at least her face) is never shown in the movie?

She was irrelevant to the overall theme. She is a part of the reality, they acknowledge this, but otherwise there is not a really valid point to show her.
It is always like that. There is someone you know about, you interact with, but your current reality is not actively, DRASTICALLY influenced by their existence.

Sure, but her kid runs around all the time and even the husband gets a tiny scene at the end. Why even bring her up if she's never there? Why make that character?

In the manga she didn't appeared too, i think the mangaka is lazy As fuck. At least Kyoani gave her a hair. I loved the hommage to my country with Maria and her father. HUE RULEZ!

Oh please, get over it. Its just a quirk that the author wanted for her character, like Ash's never-seen father. Who the hell cares, she is completely irrelevant to the story.

Because her child has some importance to the story. And maybe they didn't want to do the things like in all highschool anime where it is like parents don't even exists. They just want to acknowledge the fact that the child's parents are indeed there.

Her face was never shown in the source material so staying true to the source they kept her faceless.

Well this video more or less explains that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThR8_4c-hvU
Its because Ishida is blocking the world only seeing the faces of people that he cares about or has to pay attention to. It also can mean that his sister isn't an active part on the story of his live.

Why would his sister have an X over her face? She doesn't hate him. The X is just how he views how other people view him.

the reason they didn't show her because she didn't have any impact in his life
and another reason is that because she likes to sleep on floor
She was lazy af

from the manga

Ishida's sister was seen from behind in the firework scene standing next to her mother and her daughter. When Ishida was in grade school, she was always seen sleeping in her room with a guy. Ishida told his friends she had brought about thirty men in their house. The last one was a Brazilian named Pedro, whom she later had Maria with.

What if after everything he's done, he still can't look his sister in the eyes? It's pretty clear that there was a divide there - and sometimes when you do something awful and a sibling doesn't accept you or forgive you, you can't look them in the eye no matter how much you heal.

It wasn't necessary most likely. Mayb she wud hav been 2 or 3 scenes but that's really less so it was better not to show.

Actually there is a reason.
Both in the manga and the anime her face isn't shown.
She was always there in his life...but she never paid any attention to him. She was mostly ignorant of whatever happened in Ishida's life...it's like her presence never meant anything to Ishida's life. Hence by not showing her face the author wanted to show how irrelevant she is to Ishida's story.

thats another reason why i didn't realy like the anime was because of that annoying trope.
