| Judging only from shows where I've watched completely and rated it's probably Ed from FullMetal Alchemist. I just think he's a really poorly written and conceived character. Some others: The dude form samurai 7, that dude just sucks. Can I just say the entire cast of Eureka 7? I know Holland isn't the main protagonist, but man he's just awful. And also probably 90% of the main characters in harem anime. |

I made a "game" thread that was titled "Create your own harem!" with the entire intent being a fun thing for people to create a harem of their favorite characters based on typical harem troupes, and the first response I got was some guy claiming he was too loyal to his waifu to have a harem... a comment I ignored, but to this day I keeps making me think, "why waste your time leaving a comment?" Or like the time I created a thread titled, "Your favorite anime and why 'everyone' should watch it." Which was basically requesting people to give compelling reasons on why their favorite is worth watching, but of course the first comment on that said, "not going to even tell anyone to watch my favourites. they are like treats to pick and choose from. take it and you are in for a time. don't and you just miss out I guess." Completely and totally worthless comments that did nothing to add to any sort of conversation. I get frustrated with these simply because I make posts because I make these posts to see differing opinions, have fun, and inspire conversations, and those comments really fail to add any of that. It's just being difficult for the sake of being difficult. |

I'd say that depends a bit more on the series. Highschool DXD's MC has two male friends who are both hilarious, but unfortunately as the MC gets more tied up in the fantasy aspects of the story, they (and all other character that don't have anything to do with the fantasy aspects) kind of fade out of existence. In Nisekoi, the MC's male bestfriend is there for the entire anime, and he actually gets very significant character development (I'd argue more than anyone else in the entire series). Heaven's Lost Property has the majority of its lore and major plot develop purely through a male friend of the MC. I won't argue that there aren't plenty of harem anime with a cast filled with a self-insert protagonist and an assortment of "vapid fuckdolls", there definitely are, but there are plenty of harem anime with much more varied casts than your statement implies. |

| I'll go with Hibiki from Symphogear. She is THE Mary Sue of anime, which puts Rey from Star Wars to shame. No character development though five seasons, because she already started as utterly perfect and if you don't have further potential for character development, the only way is to grow stronger in power, which is literally handed to her. She literally managed to Talk no Jutsu the main antagonist of the series, who was on quest to eradicate humanity for millenia in like 3-4 sentences just like that. If you put something like that as a protagonist, it is a recipe for disaster. She is basically Kirito, but cracked up to 11.
