What would you guys say is the best way to have subtitles?
I've seen tons of different kinds of subtitles. Usualy it's whit with a black outline but I've seen it done in ridiculous ways.
The anime I'm watching now has greeen subtitles. It's not as nice as white and when I completed Tokko they were in a weird font which didn't make it easy to read.
Subtitles need to be picked correctly... White with a black outline with the letters not to close together is the best way... :D

You mean the typesetting? I don't really mind. Long as it is legible and not freakishly small. The default black and white or black and yellow is pretty boring at times.

I love what the subbers for Hidamari Sketch did. The series itself is a little strange and the scenes are constantly changing and flashing so that it's hard to follow the subtitles as well as what's on the screen. Shintani Subs color coordinated the subs to the characters so we know who's talking. It's genius! :P

Same type of subtitle gets boring. I generally like the ones that are good size and the style fits the anime. Froth-Bite tend to have good typesetting.

I indeed don't mind the clors and font really, all it has to be is readable and not to big or too small.
Aslong as the translation is good and I can read the subs normally im happy so I can watch and follow the anime :)

Agreed :D That said, I don't mind the typesetting style much. As long as it's readable, I'm fine with it.

The people who did Sisters of Wellber did the same thing. I dunno, I think it's kind of distracting with all the different colors. It calls attention to itself more than necessary.

Mostly what I hate about subs is when they have really bad spelling/grammar. :P As long as I can read them and they're in coherent English, I don't really care.

Same as hounddog. I don't care about the typesetting. As long as the English is coherent. That's the reason I'm watching a sub in the first place, no?

I really don't care what color and typesetting fansubbers use as long as it is legible. Things like karaoke effects and multi-colored subtitles for different characters don't mean much to me if I can't even read/understand what they're translating on screen.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

Of course it has to be proper English, but if it looks nice then that's a plus for me as well.

I really dont care how it looks as long as I can read it. Im pretty easy to please.
We explore... And you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... And you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, you cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Always a variation of black and white with a normal font. Anything else is stupid.

typesetting doesn't bother me that much...as long as it's readable, it makes no difference to me...

what does bother me is when the timing of the subs go too fast, leaving you no time to read everything before the subtitle disappears...for some reason, i had this problem with OHSHC...lunar subs are usually awesome, but many times, i had to go back, pause and read the sub before continuing when watching this series...

i also dislike constant reference notes...i always pause the episode, read the note, and then continue...it's bothersome when there's too many or too longwinded...LC's subs for lucky star 3 is a good example...

the worst is when the the sub quality is bad...i've seen some subs that literally say "i have no idea what they're talking about right now"...i guess that's better than making up stuff for what they're saying... :S

i don't care about the typesetting, as long as the timing is great, the grammar is correct, and the text is easy to read.

For the groups I work with I prefer to keep it simple so generally it's just white text with black outline. I am of the opinion that colored subs detract from the series and as stated above pull attention away from the series that and people who require colored subs to keep track of what's going on have got to be...idiots <_<

I don't care much about the color (though white with black outline is well accepted), I just want the font to be readable. I had a bit of a problem reading the subtitles for the series Bakuretsu Tenshi, because the font used was kinda technological/futuristic (I guess for reflecting the genre of the show), and many times I had to stop to be sure of what I was reading.
Notes are useful, but I'd prefer them to last a bit longer, so I can read them without having to pause all the time.
