I think there are *some* types of anime that will always be better in Japanese, simply because they contain types of characters which don't really translate well into English. I am thinking mainly of the 'pure, sweet innocent' moe-type characters which in my experience don't sound that great in English most of the time, maybe because many Japanese voices are naturally higher and more sweet-sounding, whereas if an English-speaking actress makes her voice go that high, it generally just sounds silly and unnatural. However when it comes to action anime I tend to prefer in English, because I connect better with the types of characters found in those animes if I can hear what they 'would sound like' in English. For example I have seen Code Geass in both English and Japanese and I VASTLY prefer the english version, the one moe character aside. I also am loving Eureka Seven in English. But I would never want to watch something like Clannad in English.

I usually think the subbed version is better, but I'm usually too lazy to sit there and read all the words, so I deal with dubbed. There are a few anime that are really good dubbed, but, eh, that's a rare case.

I generally don't dislike dubs but the voice actor for Luffy sucks. I'm sure she's done well in other rolls but I can't stand her as Luffy. None of the charisma that Luffy has get through in the dubbed version.

But, subs are consistently decent at worst. Dubs... yeah.

Colorful
Orphen/Orphen Revenge
Generator Gawl
E's Otherwise
Desert Punk
Solty Rei
Trinity Blood
Burst Angel
Girls Bravo
Ikki-Tousen
Dai-Guard
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (well, compared to Bandai's subs, anyway)
Chrono Crusade
Magikano
Nerima Daikon Brothers

i wouldn't watch dubbed anime over subbed if given a choice, but dubbed anime is borderline tolerable at worst for morning cartoon before-school anime like one-piece - luffy's voice wasn't THAT bad. was it o.o?

Good dubs DO exist (like Fruits Basket) but they are EXTREMELY rare.
Original Japanese with subs = win.
The general rule is:

Subs>>>>shit>>>>dubs

Always better in Japanese. When it gets dubbed, see, it gets changed to whatever is acceptable for the culture of its intended viewers. They couldn't show Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune being lesbians, so they made them cousins instead. <_<;;

I also noticed that in Japanese anime, characters usually utter senseless things like "Iya!" "Oro?" "Nya nya nya!" "po po po..." and it makes the scene funnier or happier for me. But when they get dubbed in English, they ALWAYS make the character say something else instead, like "Oh no!" "Watch Out!" "Come and get me!" it's weird.

For the most part I can't stand dubs, but I collect Dual Audios here and there because sometimes they are entertaining. There are a couple of shows I prefer the dubs for, but I'm not entirely sure if that's not just from childhood nostalgia.

Sometimes it's fun watching a show dubbed with it's original subtitles on, too :> The story can be quiiiiite different.

What if the japanese found english sayings like "Oh no!" "Watch Out!" "Come and get me!" to be funny and entertaining?

I actually prefer to watch English dubs, but sometimes the acting in English just doesn't fit or just plain sucks, so I watch the originals.

But sometimes I prefer originals over English dubs depending on the anime. Something like Beck. I like the acting in the English version, but you kind of miss part of the magic it has in the original, because of the language barriers the show creates between some characters. In English, they totally re-wrote the dialogue and broke those barriers down.

Frankly speaking there were only 3 animes I enjoyed watching them dubbed in French so far(my native language is French) which are: Ghost In The Shell, Escaflwone and Gundam seed the rest is simply a bullshit ... But we have to admit that animes are always better and greater in Japanese (specially guys voices xD)

Just wondering what you think as to if I should watch certain anime in the original Japanese or dubbed...

Castle In the Sky
Grave of the Firefly's
Howl's Moving Castle

I got wayyyy too used to Howl's Moving Castle in English (watched it a lot with my niece who loves it), so now it sounds really weird in Japanese. It had a pretty decent dub though.

Castle in the Sky's dub was okay, though I would have rather heard it in Japanese (saw the VHS eons ago) As for Grave of the Fireflies, I've only seen that in Japanese.

I would check both languages out and see which you prefer.

By the way, It's "Grave of the Fireflies", not 'firefly's' -_-

The only thing about sub/dub taht matters to me is which version of the anime i watch FIRST, if i were to watch a sub first i would prefer that version over the dub just cause i wouldnt like the voices cahnging, and the same goes if i watch a dubbed version first.

once an anime is on my HD theres no reason to RE download them in an another language, therefore i havent seen the other verson and couldnt tell anyone which version was better

I am more of a sub person. The 4kids version of One Piece ruined my faith in dubs so I try to watch anime subbed as much as I can. Although I will watch a dub if the anime's voice acting isn't too bad and they don't drop in too many bad puns.

Anime is usually better in Japanese because it was created in japanese.
Let's say something like Two and a half men with japanese dubs would be really weird...
Or perhaps something like Family Guy in japanese would be pretty weird also.

A lot of animes that i watched on tv when i was a little kid that was in English i thought of it as good..lol
Cowboy Bebop wasn't bad in English but i dropped it o_O

I've watched a pretty decent amount of dubbed anime when I was growing up and I like them. But once I watched the ones with japanese voice actors and subbing I was hooked. The thing is I can never rewatch the dubbed ones in japanese because I am use to their dubbed voices rather than the japanese voices. But overall japanese voice is way better.

The problem with the "Anime should be watched in Japanese as intended" argument is this: Do you think the creators intended their shows to be watched with subtitles plastered across the screen? I'm sure they definitely didn't intend for them to be watched with overstyled unreadable fansub subtitles. No, they intended for audiences to hear the audio in their native language and take in the visuals fully. So it could be argued that for English-speaking viewers, watching English dubs is actually closer to what the creators intended. Shinichi "Nabeshin" Watanabe has come out and said that he never intended for his shows to be read.

You're never downloaded something in dual-audio and gotten both languages at once? Usually if I have something I've never seen before on DVD (or DVD-rips), I'll switch between the languages on occasion.
