I was reading the wiki to know a summary of the story; a "promise" is mentioned some times, however there isn't a page dedicated to the "promise", so I wonder what it was. I don't care about spoilers I already read what happens through the end.

Promised Neverland

Neverland meaning

the term is often used as a metaphor for eternal childhood (and childishness), as well as immortality and escapism. The concept was first introduced as "the Never Never Land" in Barrie's theatre play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, first staged in 1904.

That's not the promise I was talking about, you probably didn't reach that part on the manga.

So like 1,000 years ago or whatever there's this war between the humans and the demons. The founder of the Ratri Clan is one of the leaders on the human side but he forgot to take his antidepressants so he betrayed the rest of the leaders on the human side and made a promise with the demon god to create two worlds: one for the humans, and one for the demons. The world with demons, however, would be supplied with the former leaders of humanity so the demons could farm them.

In exchange, the Ratri Clan would have to like... be border police between the two worlds and ensure that nobody could cross between the worlds.

It's very fucking stupid.

When Emma makes a new promise (and the wiki said that's how she "loses" her neck tattoo), what did she promise?

Emma's promise is that all of the cattle humans in the demon world would be transported to the human world in exchange for her losing her family. Her wish means that nobody could be left behind, but she is separated from the Grace Field House children and loses all memories of her family in exchange for weird demon guy fulfilling her wish.

In classic shounen style she reunites with her family at the end and they vow to have a new life.

very cool.

Is that it? Man, that's underwhelming. Thanks either way!

The promise that Emma made was to move all cattle children to the human world and make it impossible to return to the demon world and for the demons to pass to the human world and in exchange Emma loses her memories.
"Humans are like isolated islands, floating in the sea of fate.
Human encounters are like the collision of these lonely islands, and once they touch, there would be an effect. Sometimes, the islands would stick together, in the name of ‘interest’, ‘kinship’, ‘friendship’, ‘love’ and ‘hate’. But eventually, they would separate, walking towards the path of destruction.

This is the truth behind life."
