I need a lot of help with what is happening. As a non-novel reader, I started watching this yesterday because of how highly this was rated, but I am completely lost. I am very confused with how the world works since it didn't really bother explaining any of it. Is it like this is the novel too? I dropped this after one episode yesterday, but I am not exactly sure if it was the right decision.

actually most Chinese series getting better after 5++ eps, I was non novel reader MDZS and found it interesting after eps 10.
The only way to find this series interesting, you must keep watching it and pay attention because some event in ep1 will connected to later arc, probably season2 or 3.
If you think it's not interesting after 5+ eps probably 'not your cup of tea', but like i said the story will getting better probably in season 2 or 3 depends of the pace.

For this series, the original novel have 244 chapters and i found it really interesting after 50+++ chapters. The high rating probably came from novel reader like me. Pardon my English I'm not native.

That definitely gives me more motivation to pick it back up again!

Is it real that I read that this anime is currently NUMBER 22 on the top anime rankings?!
I might go ahead and watch this, but so far I'm not because of the subs.

Honestly, these are better subs than most other Chinese donghua that I've watched in the past and am currently watching. Don't expect it to be 100% grammatically correct.

Most donghuas do not get subbed since it's not as popular... So we can only be glad it even has subs.

As I've read the novel I can promise you the overall plot is amazing.
And I think they've done a nice job adapting so far^^

Ya'll keep complaining about subs being too fast and make it sound like that's the shows fault. Chinese is a very fast language. I have watched no donghua until now where I DIDN'T have problems keeping up with reading.
If you gotta blame someone either blame it on the Chinese language for being too fast or the English for being too slow.

YA'LL DON'T WANT ME TO GET STARTED ON GERMAN SUBS

I'd probably get to read 1 word out of 10 before the subs change lol

Agreed. When I first started watching Chinese donghuas, it took me a while to get used to how fast they talk and how quick the subs go by.. But once I got used to it, I started watching Chinese dramas...

Now, I've kind of just learned how to read and process Chinese subs fast.. And if I didn't catch what they said, I'll just rewind it a little bit. There's no harm in doing that.

I've never really gotten any explanation when it comes to the cultivation and God realms stuff from any of the donghuas or novels I watched/read. I literally had to Google all of it to know what it even is while I'm already confusing characters because I get Chinese names mixed up all the time xD

I struggled so hard at the beginning of this novel you have no idea, because it was also the first Chinese novel I ever read.

But once you're a bit further along you kinda get the gist of things

OH MY F*CKING GOD. IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL. It's probably the prettiest animation visuals I've seen. I was transfixed by how goddamn gorgeous it looked. Seriously, every frame is like an art piece. I can't get over it.

I followed most of the story. I'm sure I'll get more of it as the episodes go on, it's the same with Mo Dao Zu Shi - it took a little while to understand that as well but that just adds to the mystery for me. I totally get why this is rated so high after watching it though.

Seriously, just look at it. I'll admit, the subtitles are a little hard to read but that's hardly the fault of the show.

this was so unbelievably stunning in every single aspect. animation, background art, music/soundtracks, voice acting were all gorgeous. the direction was better than expected too. the angled shots combined with the sound effects created such an eldridge atmosphere. the opening is so nicely drawn and the song is fun to listen to aswell. it was pretty fast-paced but i actually didn't mind it. subs weren't a problem for me aswell, although it wouldn't affect my rating even if they were terrible. this could decline over time, but for now this was a lovely premiere to a story with much potential. forgot to mention this but the storytelling was masterfully written and crafted, and the art only elevated this by providing scenes which are a treat to look at. hoping this show will continue to deliver in the upcoming episodes, the potential is definitely there!

I think where you got confused was the part about cultivation and the magic system. The Fantasy world this story takes place in is Xianxia, which is a Chinese Fantasy genre that most people who read Chinese stories are familiar with. Therefore the show doesn't explain much in terms of ascension, cultivation, , etc. But it's not like the novel doesn't have it's own world building (which it drip feeds you slowly).

The first episode was kind of fast-paced but I thing they just wanted to get to the main story which is like very very rich. But I loved the visuals, graphics, songs and I appraciate hard subs cause it's something very unusual to get in donghuas. The novel is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read so I am looking forward to more of this donghua.

Do we have a name for the insert song that began when Hua Cheng entered the scene? It is so beautiful <3

I'm aware they won't be able to adapt it as it is, but I'm still satisfied with how they are handling it atm :)

Perhaps I'll re-read the novel from the beginning later <3

Just started to watch this right after MDZS - is anyone familiar with both novels? I really liked MDZS, mostly due to the darker / gloomy / serious aspects. I don't care about the slice-of-life-ish and BL parts, I know how the fandom adores these, but it's the least appealing part of the series for me. Based on the first episode, my impression is that TGCF is focusing more on the lighter parts / comedy compared to MDZS. Is it something to expect going forward as well, or the tone will change? It's not that I did not like the first episode, it was quite engaging, just a bit lacking compared to MDZS (even though the animation here looks sooo much better).

It'll get darker when they reach flashback episodes. War, disease, mutilation, suicide, etc..

Thing is, none of the central characters this time are human and we're presented situations from their viewpoints.

It will get darker at later arc, for me especially past arc, sometimes i just can't stand it because it's so cruel and sad.

One of the voice actors for the donghua said this quote, "The beginning was like candy but the further you read, the story becomes full of knives".
Since its 11 episodes I don't think it'll get as dark as mdzs until the second book, which deals with issues war, famine, disease, political corruption, etc. And the author seems very knowledgeable about war so its not slapped in just for a minor plot point. But the ride will be enjoyable regardless, especially since the story feels like a mature fairy tale :).
Also, lmao what slice of life are you talking about 😂. It really doesn't have much in terms of slice of life.

Can someone tell me what happened here? Everything made sense to me up until the end. Who is this Ghost Groom?
I'd understand it if they pretended they know eachother just to explain it next episode, that's a commonly used narrative resource, but here it feels like it went on for far too long like it was trying to be over the top emotional when we have no clue?

Haven't read the novel obviously but this should be able to stand on its own.

Seems like some people compare it to mdzs in this thread but in that one they certainly didn't do this, and huge cast confusion aside and some untimely timeskips (iirc) it was easy enough to follow.

I'm gonna keep watching it because I'm into this kind of stuff but I hope they don't assume everyone watching has read the novel or this is gonna go downhill fast.

Typically in MXTX novels the beginning part of the first chapter with foreshadow major plot elements that happened in the past, but we will learn about later (usually through vague rumors and hearsay by non-relevant characters), and then the actual story starts in chapter 2. This flashback in ep 1 seems to be an adaptation of that, but it seems the visual medium of animation makes things much less subtle.

This flashback is a sneak peak into the story of book 2, which new viewers have no context for yet, so for now just treat it as fanservice for novel readers. Everything will be explained in time, but book 1 (this season) is all just foreshadowing for the main plot

I see. Watched ep2 now and at least everything else continues to make sense & remains interesting.
I hope this does get as interesting as mdzs, because the art is top of the line like it was for that, and the subs very tolerable so far.

TGCF is part of the xianxia genre (which in china is as popular as isekai is here) and is a slowburn aimed at mature audiences, so this story assumes the viewer has consumed a good amount of similar content and knows they need to have patience for the story to finish establishing it's setting before starting it's epic tale. This is probably where the plot lost you.

Even if you wind up dropping the show after the dub comes out, I recommend looking into the xianxia genre a little bit, as it is an extremely interesting subgenre of fantasy and very unlike almost anything currently adapted to anime.

Not if reading it feels like a chore, yes if you were going to read it sooner or later anyway.
The subs are rather down to earth, also sadly contain some mistakes. Everything else you are likely to not understand/misunderstand will be explained later, so I guess the answer should be no, but... It is a good novel)

Personally I fell like the first few episodes tend to seem slow, dull or ordinary to those who have not read the novel and don't know yet which events or people are important for the overall plot and which are less so. The same episodes might seem perfect or rushed however to those who have because some things are omitted but some spoilers are (almost) revealed.

The plot is a kind of a charade, if you end up liking it it would be even a better experience the second time around because of all the details you are bound to miss at first.

Yeah, its bl. But they won't go so far as to show a kiss or anything too affectionate due to censorship, so you could sorta pass it off as "gayer bromance".

As someone who hasn't read the novel, i'm following this perfectly well. I only read the first chapter (or how I call it, the intro chapter) a long time ago. Perhaps the flashbacks at the end of ep1 were a bit confusing, not sure if they'll go back to that later.
But I did watch/read MDZS and SVSS, so I'm introduced to the Chinese fantasy genre to some extent. I think that might be a bit confusing to total new comers

Perhaps you should just read summaries of the novel. Each summary is different because its hard to summarize the story, and you should familiarize yourself with the different names of the characters since they have more than one, along with which God does what.

The novel itself is bl, but the show is not due to censorship. (Tho our main couple have the same level of chemistry as "the cousins" from sailor moon so its gonna be obvious) and also *gestures vaguely at San Lang* There is no heterosexual explanation for this

That being said there's also a good chunk of non-binary and genderfluid characters that constantly swap the gender they present as, so theres a chance that the staff might be able to find loopholes through that

There is only one character that can be considered genderfluid and I'm not even sure it was directly stated by the author.

Rest of them have reasons for changing their gender that has nothing to do with personal preference.

Yeah that's why I said "present as" rather than "genderswap". Since it was mentioned in the novel that
then its entirely within the realm of possibility that we might see female presenting HC, in order to bypass censorship.

Well strictly speaking... There's only one deity who actually transforms on a whim and obviously enjoys it. Or am I forgetting someone?..

Upd. I see I'm late with this message now, sorry.
Upd2. Your idea about female HC is more on the funny side for me. I would really prefer it if they just keep following the novel as strictly as they can because love shines through, like it was with the Untamed.

Nothing is explicitly stated, but if we use the process of deduction then we can conclude that, due to everyone being able to change forms (and choosing to do so), there's a high likelyhood that many of the gods/ghosts we meet are some form of non-binary/ genderfluid. Especially

Update: The only reason I'm not ruling out fem presenting HC is because I've seen chinese BL novel adaptations full on change a character's gender before in order to make it not gay. I know it sounds silly, but its a real thing that happens, especially with drama adaptations.

Well, in theory, I can hardly imagine living for hundreds of years and never exploring your possibilities while having the abilities. But that's not actually explored in this story, and it can also be deduced that since they can transform but still don't they probably have no need or desire to do so at the moment)) And giving them that need or desire in donghua means plot and characterisation changes which might not be beneficial...

Did that character get shown yet, will they even get shown?

They will show up in female form this season and in male form later.

I've never even heard of the novel before but DAMN that last scene was friggin amazing and that was the scene that made me go "yup I'm all in let's do this I have only a minimal idea of what's happening but Im here for it."

Not a huge fan, maybe if it was an hour long I'd have felt more into it. It just has the same old anime cliches I'm not a fan of anymore.

The novel is shounen ai on novelupdates. Not surprising given the cover pic.

But the anime doesn't have that tag on this website. Is the adaptation shounen ai too? Asking so I know to not get invested in it for no reason

If shounen ai is absolutely not your cup of tea you probably should not watch this.
That's just my opinion though.

Thanks for letting me know. Will stay away from it. It would be nice if someone updated the tags of the anime so other people don't get bamboozled.
