I saw this brought up in a review and it got me thinking. Slice of life like the manga "Komi Can't Communicate" gets called gag manga, but can't you interpret it differently?
Does that mean that some people think it's a gag manga, and some don't?
If they animated Komi, would it be a gag anime? It just got me thinking.

At what point is something in the gag category?
Does everyone have different standards for what is realistic? I'm really curious to hear what people think!

gag as in jokes, seitokai yakuindomo has sex jokes, basically all anime, komi-san has jokes about comunication. overall, gags are literally for comedy anime

i think gag is another term for comedy genre, but usually have no major or heavy plot and focused on the comedy part, and perhaps majority of them are episodic where it's chapter/episode doesn't really relate that much

Maybe a better way to phrase it then, is being a "gag" series inherently bad?

When I read the title I personally immediately thought of Poputepikku (or whatever it's called), and yeah, personally that's not for me at all. Then again, Puni Puni Poemy could be seen as the same type of thing and it was pretty good in how it commented in a really over-the-top way on some of the anime tropes and hentai and consumerism culture. Anyway, those two are what popped into my head. I guess good or bad would depend on whether you can appreciate that sort of thing.

Well, when i heard gag anime, the first thing that come to my mind is Gintama.

For me, gag anime means Parody Comedy anime, something like Gintama, Senyuu., Poputepipikku (Pop Team Epic), etc.

Komi can't communicate isn't a gag anime imo, as it is a comedy but not a parody.

Try reading Spy x Family Manga ^_^
U will love it, i promise...

Right, my main idea I'm thinking of is that you can still connect to the characters in a comedy. It may rely on jokes for entertainment, but you can still have a "serious" or "mature" attachment to characters, especially if there's a wholesome moment ha

When I think of a "gag" I think of a series that is INTENTIONALLY trying to be funny and weird like One Punch Man.

And I would say reminding me of One Punch Man is certainly not a bad thing lemme tell ya

i reccoemnd gintama to you. it will be the funniest anime you will ever watch and it has soem of the best best and wholeseome arcs in anime. rivaled only by one piece, berserk, vinland saga and others in terms of best arc in the story.

of course this is all subjective so it depends on your taste

I think of gag like a comedy sketch show.

Jokes for me don't make an gag anime but jokes set across various scenarios do.

Osomatsu San is a gag anime.

I guess I would also consider parody as gag too.

Gag is just a type of comedy. If you Google it up you'll get the definition of visual humor. Although you can be referring to running gag comedy, which is basically a comedy that repeatedly employs jokes relating to a distinct subject. Like most of Komi's jokes are about her not being able to talk that well, far as I know. So her not being able to communicate well and that being played as a joke regularly will be a "running gag". Hopefully that answers your question.

There are no funny anime shows. The comedy tag is a joke (pun intended).

and why it is bad? it's fine tho, since manga originally was more of in 'gag' form like the good ol' days newspaper comic stripe, it's one of the roots of it's culture :/

A show that tries to make you laugh in every single scene, primarily from a lot of elaborate comedic setups one after another, without deviating much from that formula.

I can say, as a former 'YouTube Pooper', that gag comedy is certainly not "bad".

As most people pointed out a gag anime is often just used interchangeably with a series where the primary focus and intent of the series is comedy. It could be based around creating scenarios, a focus on puns or slapstick, being heavily parody driven, etc.

The part I wanted to focus on though is your last statement about realism, a gag anime can be rooted in reality it has nothing to do with the measure of realism. If a show is framed like an office setting sitcom then it's probably a gag anime. Or for a more direct example, Tonari no Seku-kun is a gag anime which is just two people sitting next to each other in class while one finds creative ways to goof off and the other character reacts to it. It's distinctly a gag anime but there's nothing inherently outlandish or unrealistic in the presentation.

A gag series is one where there are numerous short jokes back to back like a rapid fire sketch show (Can have a plot tying the jokes together though). Nothing to do with parody, although a lot of parody shows are certainly gag series.
Can have ludicrous logic or can be grounded but the high density of gags is what is important.

Some examples for my definition:

Komi can’t Communicate is definitely a gag series, as are shows like Nichijou, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, Gintama ect. (The latter two being series with “plots“ that drive the gags)
Himouto Umaru-chan I wouldn’t be so sure about as the jokes are less packed, but I could see it argued.
Ouran Kakou Host Club is comedy but not a gag series.
