Finally, even though it was made for kids, Mahou Shoujotai Arusu is worth a look. (It's English title is "Tweeny Witches.") It has a dark story and some remarkable illustrations by Studio 4°C. |

Agreed with @EratiK on Uta∽Kata, pretty underrated show that I'd say is one of the few pre-2010s magical girl anime that gets as close to Madoka Magica as it gets. While not as artistically and musically memorable as Madoka Magica, it does look pretty great and has a bunch of memorable OST in my opinion. It's also a good pick if you're into slice of life or Cute Girls Doing Cute Things shows as there's some similar appeal.
