I'd like to start reading one shoujo ai/yuri manga, but I can't decide between Bloom into you or Girl friends. I'll probably end up buying both of them, but I'd like to know which is best as an introduction to this genre. I'm only targetting this two for the moment because they're available at a local library in my language (spanish).

Thank you :)

I haven't read Girl Friends yet, but Bloom Into You was my first foray into the genre and it didn't disappoint. I think it served as a great introduction title.

Edit: I just finished Girl Friends and it's also a great read. I think both titles are pretty good introductions to the genre. Both give a realistic portrayal of how a romantic relationship can develop. I think Girl Friends has the girls acting a lot more like typical high schoolers (they're really into clothing, make up, and talk about their romantic relationships) and is generally held in a more lighthearted tone.

I'd still go for Bloom Into You over Girl Friends because I liked the romance more. You should definitely read both because they're different takes on developing a realistic romantic relationship between girls.

Thanks for the long answer! I'll start with Bloom Into You then :)

I recommend you read Girl Friends and watch Bloom Into You's anime adaptation.

Oh shit I hate you, now that I had decided xDD

I didn't know it had an anime adaptation, it is as good as the manga?

Well, that's entirely subjective. The Bloom Into You anime is a fan favorite for any yuri lover. It handles melodrama and it's longing achy breaky feelies well. As a personal bias, I find it's way easier to portray emotions through anime rather than through manga. GirlFriends is a must read for any yuri fan, and Morinaga Milk is my personal favorite mangaka.

Some of her other work that you should read:
Himitsu no Recipe
Hana to Hina wa Houkago
Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo

My manga list is mostly if not all yuri manga. There's not much there yet, but it'll continue to grow as I collect more volumes. Have a look and add what you like.

Edit:

I should also mention if you want to really get into the yuri/shoujo-ai genre, there's a user on MAL by the name of Yuri-Crusader. I've found they have a pretty comprehensive list of anime featuring light to mid GL or ship teasing.

I'll take a look at your list for future readings :)
I have seen in the past some of Yuri-crusaders posts, it's a shame he/she doesn't have his manga list open, but I'll surely use the anime list.

I'll read Bloom Into You, then watch the anime, and then I'll go for Girl Friends. After all that I'll search for this other works :)

Yes, Yuri-Crusader is quite active on the forums, I've not talked with them much myself but I don't see sharing a users list with a much larger block of content that you're searching for as a problem.

The thing about yuri manga and the yuri genre, in general, is that you often won't find a bad piece of media. I read and watch a lot of yuri romance content, not because I'm a guy and "lesbians are cool", but because I feel they simply have the best and most realistic romance stories. You can't go wrong with Morinaga Milk though.

lady_freyja was the expert for shoujo-ai and yuri. Sadly she's no longer active on MAL and her detailed recommendations for yuri is sorely missed.

Anyway, I'd suggest going through some of her recommendation threads and you'll also pick up a lot of insight and history of yuri along the way:

shoujo-ai
yuri

She's also an expert on cross-dressing and gender-bender stuffs (you'd need different key-word searches for those).

A good Youtube channel for yuri info is Zeria. I just discovered his channel recently and already have a backlog of titles to read/watch.

It's also great that he has transcripts for the videos so if you prefer to scroll and read rather than pausing all the time to take notes.

Thanks for the info! I'll check some of her old posts, as well as this youtube channel. I have awaken some interest in this genre mainly because of Beauty and the Beast Girl, as well as from some yuri scenes from DNA Doesn't Tell Us, and now I want to explore it without hesitation, with nothing more than the romance itself (those I mentioned have monster girl/furry aspects, so I know they're not for everyone)
