Anime that were commercial failures and forced the studios to create something else

One example:

After the final season of the successful anime series Ojamajo Doremi, Izumi Todo and Toei tried something new and produced the now underrated Ashita no Nadja. Yet that series did not do as well commercially, so it lead them to create the even more popular Pretty Cure franchise.

Any other similar examples across anime and manga?

Interesting. I haven't looked into viewership and sales of anime, I don't really think about that stuff. I know only of miss kobayashi's dragon maid and keijo because they were discussed heavily on /a/

Jewelpet Magical Change which ended in being cut short and a short ONA installment being made and the franchise being killed off completely afterwards.

Saint Seiya Lost Canvas (a more seinen-ish approach to the SS franchise) to Saint Seiya Omega (the more shounen-ish, borderline kiddy approach of the franchise). Lost Canvas was a failure and its fans will never get a continuation.

Neither do I, but I remember reading the disastrous failure of Nippon Animations WMT in the mid-90s (Romeo's Blue Skies, Lassie, Homeless Child Remi), leading in shortened seasons (33,26 and 23 episodes) and the cancelation of the franchise.
10 years later they return with Les Miserables-Shojo Cossette, Porphy no Nagai Tabi and Beyond Green Gables(50,52,39 episodes) stopping WMT for good.
Now they only do shortened movie adaptations like they did with Sinbad and which had rare and very good classic hand drawn animation

Jewelpet: Magical Change was so bad it rendered the Jewelpet franchise stagnant. Its human forms for the titular Jewelpets are only used to power up their magic and never last for more than a minute, so if said human forms were replaced with Devil Trigger forms (from Devil May Cry), no one would notice. Also, 34 out of the 39 episodes are filler.

Really? that's sad. I remembered reading about Romeo's blue skies got cut short. It was a great anime

That was interesting. I don't really know any in the anime world but lots in Hollywood. Final Fantasy - the spirit within is the closest I can think of but it probably doesn't count because it crashed and burned Square Film and they didn't do anything after the movie but fold, which was really too bad. I loved their Matrix short.
