I like comedy anime, but a whole anime centered around it may be too much. Does Gintama follow an actual solid plot? If so, is it even a decent plot?

It's mostly episodic, with occasional story arcs which tend to be slightly more serious. Those arcs are more than decent. It all depends if you can stand the episodic parts.

It's more than just comedy, but comedy is almost all you get at the beginning and the first important story arc only appears after 60 or so episodes. After that it'll be a comedy with some story arcs here and there (not all connected to the main story, some are side stories) until it becomes action packed in the 4th season. Generally, the further you go the more plot you get.

its mostly comedy, the actual story starts around episode 50 an it only lasts for 7 or so episodes before it goes back to full comedy for another 40 or so episodes

personally i thought the little plot it had was uninteresting

The first gintama is the oldest, because it's old it's outdated. I like some old anime, it comes down to what you like. What I didn't like was how it starts off slow and how gintoki uses a wooden sword nothing good happened in the 30 episodes I watched so I dropped it. I could of watched a whole 24 episode anime and rewatched afro samurai during that same amount of time I spent wasted.

I haven't seen the new gintama I can't judge the new gintama
so why are u applying your logic on other people let them enjoy this classic

You're better off using the comics, so you'll manage the jokes pacing yourself if you feel the need. It works better by little dosis anyway.
