Hello,

I've been struggling to find good anime and it's beginning to take me about a week to find a good anime that I will get into.

I was hoping someone could suggest me a method on finding old anime?

For example,

YUYU HAKUSHO was a fantastic old anime, but I suspect that if it wasn't so mainstream then I would have never have found it! Therefore, I imagine there is plenty of anime that was made during the 80s and 90s that was perhaps as good as this anime, but how do you find them?

It depends on what you like in an anime(If you like visuals over story or over character) and the fact that you are a new or older anime watcher, it isnt really good to recommend a extremely good anime to someone that didnt experience average ones, but I will assume you watched a bunch by now

Visuals-I dont know much(I dont care that much about it) but Kenshin is very pretty and it does a good story and great characters

Story-I would recommend something like Area 88

Characters-GTO if you only want to see the path these great characters take and how they interact while having fun

Well, I've been a fan in the medium for awhile so naturally my exposure to anime is quite high.

I've also read through plenty of recommendation threads/reddit posts/top 10's. Not to mention the countless recommendations I've had throughout the years..

You can also simply request good old anime in this forum section or thread itself if you'd like.

Well, if you really want to sample older shows that might not get so many active recommendations, you can jump a ways back with the MAL season charts, which are , sorted by popularity by default. For recent seasons, popularity can be misleading. however for older seasons the crappier shows tend to be forgotten and more worthwhile shows rise to the top of the list.

So, jump some ways back and start delving yourself. It's a good way to find worthwhile things that might not receive a recommendation otherwise. (some good criteria are: look at how many shows are in each old season - you might want to consider more of the top shows from seasons with more stuff in them, also consider total number of viewers and user rating)

One I'd suggest is Space Battleship Yamato from 1974. Absolutely classic sci-fi.

There's a few methods you could use:

A. Go to seasonal anime, jump to the season and year you want and click go, then scroll through all the available anime and see if any catches your interest, if they don't you can go back or forward one season and so on untill you find something.

B. Go to anime search and then click on view more in the anime seasons column, pick a season and year, then scroll untill you find something.

C. Click on the view more in the Studios column, pick a studio and sort anime by start date, then go to the very last page and look at each anime, going backwards.(warning as some studios aren't actually studios but just broadcasting channels or licensing studios, meaning they don't actually make the anime, so many will have a lot of the same, there's also Hentai studios if those bother you...)

D. In anime search, pick a genre you like, sort anime by start date, then go to the very last page again and look through each anime going backwards.

E. Look through anime suggestions of anime you have already watched or just ask for some recommendations on the forum or from trusted people.

Hope i helped! :)

If you know what you're looking for (and you have an account with them) you could go to Bakabt and check out their vast collection of old stuff.

Personally, I like going through the seasonal MAL archives: https://myanimelist.net/anime/season/archive
I found some really cool anime by doing that, like Area 88, Kyou kara Ore wa!!, Venus Wars or Patlabor.

Venus Wars is pretty good although some people think it sucks.

Stuff like:

Berusaiyu no Bara
Oniisama e
Ginga Tetsudou 999 (TV and the first 2 minutes)
Sennen Joou (TV and Movie)
Shin Cutie Honey
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (everything)
Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Herlock

There's some jumping off points.

Try some and then find related anime here and you'll end up being able to branch out into old anime in a rabbit hole way.
