THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The bait is stronger in this episode then the previous episode and the rabbit is very cute.

I disliked reading about the past in the novel but the anime definitely made it better for me!

edit. For the comment above and in response to the comment below, to clarify I mean general flashbacks which I usually dislike in most entertainment I read or watch. I do not intend to spoil anything and did not mean anything for my comment if you think i'm spoiling the anime with it, sorry. I do agree that novel spoilers shouldn't be in this thread.

I went in to this knowing completely nothing about the series and was blown away. Easily one of my most looked forward to shows of the season.

I'd like to ask novel readers to please be mindful of spoilers as there are a lot of us that are new to Mo Dao Zu Shi.

I'm really enjoying this so far, the art is especially good and it is nice to see donghua with a distinct style. although I am still struggling to get used to chinese, particularly the names.

How long do we reckon it will stay in the flash back?

Looks like we're getting some character development with Wuxian saving the rabbit and giving up a little on using the resentful energy. Hope Lan Zhan will get some soon too, getting tired of hearing him just repeat "你..." and "不去". But not sure what happened in the forest, did the zombie try to possess Wuxian? Didn't he have control over a more powerful being (the General) in a previous episode? Is that because he was playing that instrument? Or is he losing power? Does Lan Zhan even know the real identity of Wuxian? And I didn't know we were in a flashback to be honest, I thought the only flashbacks were at the start of episode 1 and then later there was that one short flashback where Wuxian killed the mother of the guy that was fighting alongside him.

Also, are we going to get a "real" storyline or is this going to stay a chill MOTW kinda thing?

(If anyone who has read the source material can answer these that'd be great, just remember to use the spoiler tag)

I had a hard time with names too so I did some googling to better understand the naming system.

Birth Name: Self explanatory

Courtesy Name: Given or adopted upon adulthood, used outside of family and close friends.

Art Name: Professional title, akin to a pen name.

Birth Name: Wei Ying
Courtesy Name: Wei Wuxian
Art Name: Yiling Patriarch (Yíling Laozu)

Birth Name: Lan Zhan
Courtesy Name: Lan Wangji
Art Name: Hanguang-Jun

Birth Name: Jiang Cheng
Courtesy Name: Jiang Wanyin
Art Name: Sandu Shengshou

(Lan Wangji's older brother)
Birth Name: Lan Huan
Courtesy Name: Lan Xichen
Art Name: Zewu-jun

I think I've got everything right, if I've made any mistakes, those that know please feel free to correct or add more.

All of the things that happened in ep 1 and ep 2 (up to the part where Lan Zhan threw the apple in the air) was in the present. After the apple in the air scene, it's all flashbacks so we're currently in the past, before Wei Wuxian became the Yiling Patriarch.

I don't think the zombie was trying to possess Wuxian but that when he tried to stop the zombie with his hand, it came in contact with the zombie's resentful energy and his hand started to absorb it. Luckily he didn't absorb much so I think he was able to control it and not transform into a zombie too.

When he controlled the General with the flute, that was in the present time and he was controlling it with demonic arts.

The novel actually went back and forth between the present and the past but it looks like the anime is focusing more on the past first.

Hope this helps! Sorry if I said some things that were pretty obvious, just wanted to clarify them haha.

I see, thanks. That makes more sense then. Looks like I'm gonna have to do a rewatch sometime soon because I didn't catch the whole present to past transition lol

Okay, so the resentful energy was being rejected by his golden core (or something), and it severely imbalance his power so he couldn't fight? I'm glad there's this scene in the anime because things that happened later in the novel... is too vague.

Hi to quickly answer this, in the Title Name of the Anime we can see these characters - 前尘篇 (highlighted in red box):

Translated, it means "The Past Story“. Which also means, this season will be completely showing the previous life of Wei Wu Xian.

In the novel, all flashbacks of Wei Wu Xian's past life are scattered and dispersed while in this season, for a more complete picture, the donghua is stringing them together.

Lan is 超正經 I love it , No wonder Jiang wanted to destroy Wei in the present. He was the most angry and upset with Wei witnessing his demonic existence, to lose a good friend to evil.

ok the end of this episode was epic.. Never thought that I would ever get so attached to characters speaking chinese, never really liked the language but this was pretty intense. Goosebumps.

i can't for the life of me remember the names of the characters, but i know who is who during the episodes, so it's not that bad. it's just that i'm not used to chinese and i'm bad with names in general anyway.

but mdzs is a pleasant surprise, i never thought i'd be so endeared to a chinese anime. nor that it would look this good. even if the story was not that good - which it is entertaining anyway - the visuals are simply stunning.

The ending scene made me sad since he uses demonic cultivation to protect those who can’t protect themselves like the rabbit.
