Shinryu's battles are ALWAYS on another level! His episodes are the best and this was actually the first time one of the Bronze Saints did defeat a Golden Saint. Not only did Shinryu defeat Cancer, but also did send him into Oblivion through the Realm of the Dead! Cool stuff,

Well yeah but that saint already lost the power of his gold cloth.

Seiya broke Aldeberan's horn, the other saints froze his hand. Shun injured Arles who was controlling Gemini and got out that way. Hyoga died to Camus. This was the first gold saint who truly fell, so that's an achievement on Shiryu's part. The callback to the first arc when he found Seiya without armor was pretty great too, Shiryu's sense of pride is unmatchable.

I can't say the fight was my favorite however. Why wouldn't the gold cloth leave him before that very moment? Because Shiryu remembered that saints are supposed to fight for justice and the true meaning of justice? Because Saori sent some magical waves his way? The way it was phrased was that the armor rejected him which makes sense, but I'm sure it could've done that at a much earlier time. Death Mask is pure evil! So, I'm not a big fan of this fight, it was both too long and slow paced, and the payoff wasn't satisfying but I still enjoyed it for all the characters, and the concepts along the way.

I think it was a combination of Athena's will and the armor rejecting him. Saori certainly interfered there. They're all saints of Athena after all.

That's a reasonable explanation, true justice beating evil like that fits along with Saint Seiya's themes. That being said, it still seems ad hoc which leaves the entire slowly paced fight ending arbitrarily, at least in my view.

I agree. We need to do a lot of mental gymnastics to don't see it as an asspull. xD

If you watch this anime based on how credible vs real life it can be ... then the whole show is non-sense :)

Deathmask got his comeuppance, and Shunrei and Shiryu are okay. It was cool to see the Cancer cloth/armor decline Deathmask. This fight was a bit drawn out, though, overall.
