So I've been playing the Agarest series (Record of Agarest War and Agarest War Zero, having a bitch of a time getting into 2 because the combat seems so dreadfully slow) and was wondering if there are any other good JRPGs with romance aspects to them.

I have available a PC, PSP and PS2, nothing beyond or behind any of those (Except for 3DS, but I already own most of the Harvest Moon/Rune Factory/Story of Seasons and Fire Emblem games)

I enjoy games with choices which is why I like the Agarest games. I'd honestly play 2 more, but I can't find a True End guide that makes any sense.

tales of the abyss (ps2) and tales of symphonia(on steam) both have pretty good romantic subplots that also are pretty major parts of the story, abyss more than symphonia is heavy on the romance though it takes about 25% or so into the game for it to really start, star ocean 2 on the psp also has a pretty solid romance though not much focus.

If you're looking for JRPGs with different romanceable characters, I heartily recommend Persona 3 FES and Persona 4, both available on the PS2.

Persona 4 has a great story to it. More importantly (for the purposes of this thread,) it features multiple party members and NPCs as potential love interests (if you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can even choose to romance more than one, which, I'm told, leads to some awkward situations. Personally, I just stuck with one.) It features some date scenes (i.e. on Christmas) with whichever girl you choose. The enhanced PS Vita remake, Persona 4 Golden, features more stuff along this line (i.e. an extra romanceable character, a skiing trip, and... I think it had a Valentine's Day event.) Additionally, it has some extra story, a bonus dungeon, and enhanced gameplay. If you ever get the chance to play it, I definitely recommend P4 Golden over the original, but the original is still a flippin' blast.

Both versions also feature multiple endings that depend on your choices in the story.

Persona 3 FES is similar to P4, but the gameplay is a little less refined, and the mechanics behind romancing characters are a little less deep. The story is still great, though, and the romance side of things was nice (at least if you pick Yukari, as I did. I assume the others were good, too. If I'm wrong, anyone is free to correct me.)

Persona 3 FES also has a PSP version called Persona 3 Portable. I haven't played this version, but I do know that it gives you the opportunity to play as a female protagonist instead of the standard male protagonist.

Final note: While Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 are both set in the same world, you don't have to play them in any particular order. P4 includes a few references to the previous game which will make you grin if you played P3, but it doesn't spoil the story at all.

Important Note: I no longer - in any way, shape, or form - consider myself a moral nihilist (even in my old, convoluted definition of the term). I very much do believe there is such a thing as objective good and evil. In addition, I apologize for any of the posts I've made that are rude, aggressive, or otherwise unbecoming.

I've always striven to walk a path befitting a follower of Christ, and now recognize some of my old comments here as misguided if not outright wrong. If you happen upon them, pray do not let them darken your view of the God I serve. He is kind, even if I, at times, have not been.

I could actually pick-up Tales of the Abyss on the 3DS as well. Seen the anime for it as well, pretty good. I'll definitely look into the game.

Also I have Symphonia, Zestiria and Berseria on Steam, playing Berseria first however.

tales of symphonia
does fragile dreams count as JRPG?
Xenoblade chronicles sort of
"among monsters and humans, there are only two types.
Those who undergo suffering and spread it to others. And those who undergo suffering and avoid giving it to others." -Alice
“Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty.” David Hume
“Evil is created when someone gives up on someone else. It appears when everyone gives up on someone as a lost cause and removes their path to salvation. Once they are cut off from everyone else, they become evil.” -Othinus

I wouldnt play berseria first at all, 1 it makes it hard to play some of the older ones but more importantly if you are gonna play zestiria they designed the story so you would play zestiria first.

Now the downside is, zestiria kind of sucks.

Berseria is a prequel to Zestiria though. You even see Velvet and Rokurou in the anime of Zestiria X O.o

At least Zestiria was decent from a gameplay perspective, though, admittedly i wouldn't have gotten it if it wasn't for being 80+% off.

If you have a decent PC built within the last 5-6 years, you should be able to to run Xenoblade Chronicles via Dolphin, though I'd highly suggest buying it, if possible. It has a 3DS port, but i'm not sure how well that fairs compared to its wii counterpart.

Trails in the Sky (PC) kind of has a romance subplot, FC and SC are pretty great.

Persona 3 and 4 (PS2) (Although 4 probably has heavier romance elements)

Ar Tonelico I/II (PS2) Pretty heavy romance subplots, The second game is the best in the franchise, Imo.

Try Growlanser 4 on PSP. Thought the combat system was pretty fun and you can choose who to romance. Plus Satoshi Urushihara did the art. Underrated in my opinion.

I do in fact have a PC built within the last 5-6 years. My problem with Dolphin is that certain games just run like crap. I tried playing The Last Story but could only manage 30 FPS.

I'll check out Ar Tonelico. I'd play Trails in the Sky but from what I understand the MC is a female.

I'm no expert on this, but i do think some Wii games are hard coded for 30fps. I'm pretty sure Xenoblade Chronicles is one of them, The Last Story might also be in that boat. Honestly you can run Xenoblade Chronicles better on Dolphin than you can on its original hardware considering you can increase the internal resolution (although this doesn't make the character models look any better). FPS shouldn't be an issue in games, especially when it comes to emulation. The big issue is whether or not it runs at 100% speed.

Trails i suppose could be considered female MC, but honestly, the first game especially, its more of a 50/50 thing. I recommended it outside of its romance components but if it being "mainly" focused on the female MC is offputting, then i can understand that.

yes it is a prequel, but the games were written in the order that youd see zestiria first, youll miss a ton of details by playing berseria first some of which are actually kind of major plot points, where as if you play zestiria first youll see everything as the writers intended.

But again another big reason is, zestiria is one of the worst entries in the franchise, while I dont think its the abomination alot of the fanbase does its still a black sheep both story and gameplay wise. Meanwhile berseria is one of the best in the franchise, if you try to go into zestiria 2nd its going to make an already unpleasenet experience comparatively more unpleasent

if you really want to 2nd evolution will be a game with a bit more umph if you have played star ocean 1 for a couple of reasons, though the quality jump between 1 and 2 is pretty massive so if you hypothetically dont like 1 dont get deterred from starting 2. 1's romance isnt that in your face and doesnt really have closure for the MC but theres a few scattered party member romances that do, you do need to go out of your way to advance it in private action scenes and both 1 and 2 feature tones of optional party members so its possible youll miss certain pairings and scenes alltogether. 2 is alot more romance heavy and does feature conclusions to the romantic subplots.

Have played about 10hrs of Persona 3 and 4, definitely like 4 a lot more. I wish more of the SMT games were like this. Kind of want to buy a PS4 just for P5.

Agreed.

Also, P5 is on the PS3, too.
