You're in the grand finals of a competition, and you're final opponent just so happens to be your greatest rival. In terms of skill and knowledge of the competition, you are both equal. However, what separates you from your opponent is a trait that you excel at. If you were to choose between the 3 "S's", which of them would you choose to overcome your opponent?

Speed to outrun your opponent?
Strength to overpower your opponent?
Or Stamina to outlast your opponent?

Step 1:
Light Yagami (Death Note)
Suzuka (Suzuka)
Shirou Emiya (Fate series)
Mikoto Suou (School Rumble)

Step 2:
Random it is!

Thanks to your mean score, Suzuka is eliminated.

Step 3:
C1: Mikoto gets 1
C2: Shirou gets 1
C3: Mikoto goes to the final.
C4: Light gets 1
C5: Light plays tennis, and that takes him to the final.

Step 4:
Ok, I'll say Light just because I can't picture any of the other characters cheating. Now Shirou takes his place in the final (just to keep some gender variety).

Well, Shirou actually retired from his sport (archery), while Mikoto is actively practicing so it's only fair to crown her the Best Athlete in Anime!

How do you alternate between watching anime and reading manga: are you always in process of watching something and reading something or do you tend to exclusively watch anime and then switch to manga when you feel like it?

I used to watch stuff on a whim: after finishing something I would just go for whatever crossed my mind at the moment, or whatever random title I saw in X site. Such process wasn't efficient at all, since more often than not I would just sit there, wondering what I should watch next, taking a lot of time to actually decide; so, when I joined MAL, I started to work on some sort of "watching schedule" based on my PTW list in order to avoid the aforementioned problem, and so far, it works nicely. Now, how does the watching schedule works? It's pretty simple, really: I just choose 2 or 3 shows from my PTW list, start watching them one at a time, and as I go, I pick another 1 or 2 to go to once I'm done with the initial set. The schedule is not set in stone, though, and I ignore it for seasonal shows, since I choose what to watch once the season actually starts; I also might ignore it because some anime suddenly caught my interest, but that doesn't happen very often; and lately I've been ignoring it because I joined the Anime Watching Challenges club and the stuff on my schedule didn't work for the challenges I'm trying to complete.

Now, about manga and anime, well, they say variety is the spice of life, so, to use your words, I'm usually in the process of watching something and reading something, though I watch more than I read not because reading is boring, but because when I pick up a good manga I get so caught up in it that time just flies by me, and there's university stuff to take care of, so I can't always afford to do that.

Tarotist said:

The details. I believe mystery is a truly unforgiving genre, very difficult be done right, and even the slightest mistake can make things either too obvious or feel out of place (that feeling you get when something comes out of nowhere, doesn't make sense at all, yet the writers force it in there and expect you to just buy it and keep watching). So when the plot is not well thought and consistent, any detail can be the show's doom, no matter how good the idea behind the whole thing was.

Happy Wednesday and Welcome to HST Survey Number 39!

It's kinda funny how this survey comes the same day I finished Shinsekai yori.

Step 1:
Shinsekai yori
Monster
Baccano!
Ergo Proxy
Gankutsuou

Step 2:
C1: Shinsekai yori could be use to define that word. Least, Baccano!
C2: Hard to choose since the phrase "I didn't see that one coming" came out of my lips at least once with each of those shows, but I did say that a lot with Ergo Proxy. Gankutsuou loses here.
C3: Baccano! has a great cast, the others have great casts too, but yeah, Baccano!. Ergo Proxy loses.
C4: Monster wins. Baccano! which is kinda obvious since the LN is still publishing.
Bonus: Gankutsuo gets a +1 from C2

Shinsekai yori and Monster with 3 points each, and Ergo Proxy with 2 points advance to the next step.

Step 3:
Part one: Shinsekai yori goes to the final.
Part two: Monster is our second finalist.

Step 4:

That's actually a pretty good question. Sadly I'm not creative enough since every flavour I could think of already exists... Damn, that's frustrating for some reason.

I'd lay low, avoid direct confrontations in the early stages of the game, watch and enjoy how my rivals eliminate each other, getting tired in the process, and then strike. Great strategy, if laying low was at all possible here...

Pros and cons of the Steins;Gate VN compared to the anime adaptation?

Making this comparison would be like comparing visual novels and anime in general, and I don't feel like doing that, so instead, I'll just tell you that in my opinion the Steins;Gate anime is the perfect example of what VN adaptations should aim to be: you don't have the same level of detail nor the same amount of information the VN provides, but all the essential parts of the story are there, with an ideal pacing, and, it's been a while since the last time I watched it, but I don't think they took too many liberties with the plot. As a result, the Steins;Gate anime is something both fans of the source material and newcomers to the story alike can enjoy (I was a newcomer the first time I watched it), as opposed to those adaptations which end up making no sense unless you know the source material beforehand, or take so many creative liberties that the end result turns out to be completely unrelated to the material they were supposed to be adapting (that movie "Wanted"? that's how you ruin a great comic book).

If you're looking for motivation to try the VN, I can tell you that the other routes (Not Kurisu's) are pretty good, not very long, but they're nice; the art is beautiful, in my opinion; the explanations regarding phenomena like the gel banana are great; and you get to "be" Okabe instead of just seeing him, which is cool... If you like Okabe, of course...

Happy Wednesday and Welcome to HST Survey Number 41!

I'd love to do the double version, but I don't know most of the female candidates, and I think nominating other characters kinda defeats the purpose of this survey, sooo:

Step 1:
Saitama
Squealer
Takeo
Sakurako

Step 2:
C1: Hard competition right off the bat since all my nominees are key in their respective anime, but I'll give this one to Sakurako because her anime would be nothing without her. Squealer loses because... He's the only supporting character among my nominees, I guess.
C2: Saitama wins. Squealer loses again.
C3: Takeo earns his popularity. Poor, poor Saitama.
C4: Sakurako!!!

Salurako with 6 points goes to the final. Takeo with 3 and Saitama with 2 will battle in the third step. Goodbye, Squealer.

Step 3 - The Random Version
Hahaha! That was incredibly random. I'm pretty sure both of them would survive, but Saitama is in a whole different level, so he goes to the final.

Step 4:
Alright, the Overall Survey Champion 2015/16 is...

Very goid question. See, I'm tempted to mention a bunch of stuff I like but, upon closer inspection, I realise many of the worlds that come to mind at first might not be such a great idea.

Take the videogame Bishock Infinite, for example: a city in the skies is a fantastic idea, and the kind of place I'd love to visit if it really existed, but then, as in every game, stuff happens, and I'd hate to be there at that moment. Skyrim offers a big and beautiful world, with lots of things to discover, but I don't want to live under the constant fear of being eaten by a dragon at any given time. Some world that offers the possibily of traveling through space, meeting different planets and races, like Mass Effect or Cowboy Bebop to mention an anime, sounds nice too, but there always has to be some kind of conflict going on.

In the end, I'll go with One Piece. I'm doomed in this world too, but I might be just lucky enough to visit some of the very imaginative and fantastic places seen throughout One Piece before meeting my end at fangs of some sea king, or I might find a safe island and settle down... Nah, if I plan to settle down I might as well stay in the real world; I'll live the adventure, meet interesting and fun places and then die at the fangs of a random sea king.

A sci-fi anime involving intergalactic travels, with a variety of alien races taking part. The mc could actually be an alien who, after meeting many different worlds, stumbles upon the Earth; or a human astronaut whose mission goes wrong (yeah, I know, that's as cliché as anything could be...), and somehow ends up in an unknown world inhabited by an unknown race... Or something actually original.

Anyway, there are many possibilities, but the only thing I know for sure is that it would be set in space.

As for the studio, well, I like Madhouse.

I'm a tolerant person, so it's hard to get on my nerves. Also I have a good sense of humor, try to see the funny side in everything that happens to me, and have no problem laughing about myself (we all do stupid stuff every now and then).

Batman or Superman ? Who do you like more and why?
I've never been a Superman fan simply bacause I always thought his powers made things too easy for him, and since kryptonite is practically the only way to hurt him, he turns out to be very monotonous and rather boring. Batman, in the other hand, being nothing but a man, has to resort to his cunning in order to sort out the difficulties he might encounter, and that usually makes things very entertaining. I guess I just like the idea of a man being among the most powerfull heroes of the Earth, thanks to sheer dedication and will power.

You're right, that's some crazy affinity. And our anime affinity is almost 75%, which is pretty high too.

Anyway, my PTR list is full of stuff I'd like to try ASAP, but time is always an issue. I've been meaning to read Freesia for a while, and I'm very curious about Slam Dunk, too; but if I have to choose one manga, it would actually be one of your favorites: 20th Century Boys. Ever since I watched Monster, I've been curious about Naoki Urasawa's work. I recently finished Pluto and it magnified my curiosity, the end was rather lacking, but I really enjoyed the ride; and as 20th Century Boys is usually considered Urasawa's masterpiece, I just have to read it.

Hello ^^

Thanks for being one of the people who has supported my surveys regularly by doing 20+ of them in the first survey season :-)

These are the rules for Season 2 as well as a bonus/test survey which i will be doing under the new rules. So if you feel like doing this survey and/or giving me your opinions on the rules, here it is!

THESE RULES ARE PROVISIONAL, so if a majority of you "veterans" dislike a rule, i will of course change it. The goal is to find simple yet effective rules together before we present them to everyone ;)

P.S.: I won´t present the rules like you read them here...i´ll make sure to highlight the important parts and add some "shape" to them before presenting.
Thanks in advance for helping me out and take your time with this whole post and test survey. Answering within the next two weeks is totally enough! :)

The most obvious changes are the Points System and the Double Participation.
After the test survey, we can have a look together and see if you like it or if we go back to the old system. Also, let me know what you thnk of having the chance to double-participate on each survey please :)
I´ll keep the 4 Steps on the Full Versions as they are, but i promise to try and find new and more different forms of competition types ^^

If you have any ideas on this too, i´m totally willing to listen hehe

Other Goals: Any other goals for the new season you can come up with we should set ourselves to make it more interesting? Tell me! Two i came up with:

1. More "guest" surveys if people wanna create their own survey as it mixes the usual system up. Fate´s survey was pretty popular ^^
2. Find survey topics connected to actual events going on in the world once a month (like doing an "Olympic Survey" during the Rio 2016 games etc.)
--------------
Here´s the test survey. I´ll keep it short since the main purpose is to try the points thingy and to see how the victory presentation looks so we can see together if it´s better or worse ^^

Topic is "Best Survey" lol as i can´t officially do that for obvious reasons and i´m curious. You probably have to look through and find you HST to search for the surveys on Step 2, C1 so if that´s too annoying for you, just skip this competition.

Thoughts on Nodame Cantabile? :)

A very fun lighthearted anime, perfect for getting out from my usual anime watching routine. I really like classical music and I believe it's a pretty difficult subject to handle, yet this anime treats it with the care and respect it deserves, all while favoring an easygoing and comical atmosphere instead of an overly dramatic one, and I really appreciate that; drama is not the only way to take something seriously.

At first I feared that the romantic aspect might end up becoming the main focus of the show, but thankfully that was not the case. Music stays as the most important thing and everything that happens in the story is somehow connected to it: the main characters meet thanks to music, the only thing they have in common is music, and it is more than enough for them to get along. All the character interactions are a byproduct of the musical experiences they share together, and their personal issues and ideals too have to do with music.

All the episodes where a concert took place were a real treat for me, as I could just sit back and relax while listening to the great masterpieces they chose to portray.

Last but not least, Nodame herself is a riot. I had waaay too much fun with her... I don't know, "lunacy", maybe? I have no idea what word to use in her case. Anyway, they don't make characters like her anymore, it's all tsunderes everywhere.

Step 1:
Best Parent
Best Dark Anime
Best Manga Adaption
Best 90s Anime

Step 2:
C1: My memory is a bit fuzzy but I think the best was Best Dark Anime. Least... I'll go with 90s
C2: Well, out of all the winners of my nominated surveys, I only know FMA, so that's 3 points for Best Manga Adaption. Nobody loses points here.
Bonus: Best Manga Adaption+3. Best 90s Anime +1.

Best Parent is eliminated, and Best Dark Anime goes to the final thanks to the tiebreak.

Step 3:
I think Best Manga Adaption has been the hardest survey for me, so we have our second finalist.

Step 4:
Like I said before, Best Manga Adaption was the hardest for me and that also made it the Best Survey! in my opinion, of course.

My thoughts on the new rules
I really like the point system as I believe it will make the tiebreakers easier for some surveys. On the other hand, I don't see the point in the double participation thing since it seems kinda redundant to me, but I might be the only one who feels that way.

The guest surveys are a nice idea since the lack of variety might be the main reason why the participation rate dropped; and last but not least, I really like your idea of making surveys connected to current events; it seems like a great way to encourage participation and keep things fresh, while viewing anime from different and unusual perspectives.

Honestly, I found it disappointing. The show was enjoyable but I expected more, especially after the first two episodes.

I praise the fact tha it presents a very ralistic approach on what a spy's work actually is, and some of the cases were really interesting, but the introduction of a new protagonist every week resulted in me never connecting with the show, and never caring about what could happen to the week's mc.

The other problem I had was Yuuki's perfection: he always had the hang of every situation and when it looked like there was another spy master who could be a worthy rival for him, it turned out that Yuuki was one step ahead and had the perfect way out of trouble, making foreign spy agencies look like complete amateurs before his greatness. Yeah, they took it too far with him.

In my opinion, Joker Game is one of those shows you enjoy while they last but easily forget about once they end; it had potential to be more, but didn't live up to it.

That's a tough question. See, if there's something I learned from Spider-Man's comics in recent years is: even if your brain is overwritten with other person's data, a small part of yourself might remain and eventually grow and regain control of your body. Considering that, I could give the money to my current body, hoping that someday the Peter Parker in me will recover what's supposed to be mine, allowing me to enjoy the money in my original body. But what if I take too long to recover my body and once I do my new self already wasted the money, leaving me in a completely miserable situation? Then I'll give the money to my new body, I'll multiply the money and become so rich that all my cash will rot away before I can decide what to do with it (because right now I'm feeling confident enough to believe I could build my own empire instead of just wasting the money in casinos and prostitutes)... Only to have the other person recover their body and enjoy the empire I created... But I could use the money of my new empire to find a way to erase every last shred of the other person's conciousness. Yeah, I'll go with that one. The important thing here is avoiding torture, anyway.

You are forced to watch an Ecchi anime. However you have two choices:

Extreme vulgar language or heavy nudity?

I always thought ecchi was all about hot girls shamelessly exposing their attributes; this is the first time I hear vulgar language alone is enough for an anime to be considered ecchi. I learned something today.

Vulgar language has never bothered me, and if I want heavy nudity I might just watch a hentai. Besides, it's been a while since puberty ended for me so I guess I'll go with vulgar language.

You are forced to live on an island for a few years but before you go you need to pick what food you will live on. There is one problem though and it's that all the food in front of you, you dislike.
What do you pick to live on?

In an anime/manga that you have seen or read, what is one of the most ridiculous/weirdest/strangest names that a person/place/thing possesses?

Well, I've never liked seafood and that would be pretty easy to come by on an island, so seafood it is.

Off the top of my head I can think of Baby 5 from One Piece, Figure Four from Gunnm, Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV from Cowboy Bebop (better known as Ed), Good Turtleland III from Mugen no Ryvius (they call him Charlie), and Nrvnqsr Chaos from Tsukihime (they just call him Nero).

It's nice to see the surveys are here again. By the way, I can't believe you never did a best comedy survey before, since it's such and obvious topic. I always thought you might had done it before I started participating. Anyway, let's do this!

Zoro, definitely. First and foremost, I'm a katana nut and he uses three, but what I really like about him is his personality. One moment you see him completely dedicated to his training and nobody takes an enemy more seriosly than he does; the next moment, he's fast asleep in the middle of a nightmarish storm while the others do their best to survive, or taking a left turn when his friends in front of him go up the stairs. He's also Luffy's support, the one who keeps him and the whole crew focused when it's necesary, like when Usopp leaves. I guess I just like the contrasts of his personality, but the same could be said about the others, so maybe it is only because of the katanas after all.

cheers for taking part again ^^
I can explain why there has never been Best Comedy: In the early days of the surveys i had no idea if it would last for long or not but i had a few more creative or specific topic in mind so i wanted to save "Best Genre" surveys until i get to a point where i can´t up with anything else. Also there aren´t too many genres so i have to use them little by little or else i run out of them quickly...

also early on i thought topics need to be very specific to limit the number of possible nominees. I didn´t want to end up with a mass poll as a decider all the time haha

______

ANYWAY after what you said about The Girl Who Leaped Through Time about the destractions/ comedic scenes taking your focus away from certain more serious moments which served as hints for what´s actually going on...Do you feel this "mistake" has been done in other anime too which have both these elements? (Dramedy is possibly the best example) you know, anime where they overused one genre over the other and it has a negative effect on you?

That’s a good one. Zoro has been my favorite for the majority of the time, but Usopp finally took over in Dressrosa-arc.

Hmm... I don't think I've ever felt like that with other anme besides that one. A somewhat similar situation could be Concrete Revolutio. In general terms, I liked the idea behind the plot but there was so much stuff going on, and so many different plot elements to cover that it was hard for me to keep up. It was as if the creators themselves didn't know exactly where they wanted to go with the show... But I haven't watched the second season, so I might be wrong about that.

Zoro is like a living epic-moment-magnet, so it's pretty hard to choose, but I'll go with this one:

Ohh that is one of my favourite moments in the series pronto. I’d add the moment before to it, where Zoro claims without a hint of a doubt that Luffy will become the pirate king.

Let us assume that in the future, it will be mandatory for a human to transfer their minds into machines. In other words, we would become androids or robots. The advantage of this is that because we are machines, we are technically immortal and that we would not suffer the burdens that a human has to endure like hunger, disease, and exhaustion. The downside is that the human lifestyle would become extinct. No need for hospitals or schools because our thoughts are data, and sexual reproduction would no longer be necessary because our "minds" can be easily replicated and transferable from machine to machine.

Would you accept this mandatory law of transitioning from human to machine, or will you rebel against that law and retain your humanity?

Doffy. I usually like my bad guys to be truly evil, with no room for regrets that ultimately lead them to turn good... and die afterwards. Doffy knows well the dark side of the force, and embraces it. This man doesn't hesitate to sacrifice the lives of his comrades if that helps him to achieve his goals; he thoroughly enjoys other people's suffering, especially if he is the one who inflicts said suffering; he has the god complex, thinking he's superior to the common man; he loves manipulating people (just take a look at his ability); and he has the evil laughter and excentric attire to complete the combo. A truly magnificent bastard, that Doffy.

The rebelion got a new ally as soon as I read the bold text.
