You would think the original material something is made from would be more popular than a new creation made from said material.

Manga is less popular in western countries. In the country of origin, Japan, Manga is a lot more popular than Anime.

This.

Plus It's the same as why TV/films are generally more popular than books. Most people prefer to watch something rather than read something.

Maybe because people who aren't very familiar with anime and manga often just hear the word "Anime", and if they want to know more about it, it might take a while before they pick up manga. Manga is also not an easy thing to find, while many watch anime online for free (I know you can do this with manga too, but again, it takes time for newcomers to get used to it). I personally tend to prefer reading manga, but if I've heard this one had a great anime adaptation, I tend to skip it and just chill in front of my computer :)
As some said before, in Japan, it's very normal for people to read manga instead of watching anime, though watching anime isn't seen bad either (the contrary to what happens in most countries...)

That doesn't apply to Japan.

But for like the US it is the same reason movies based on books are bigger than the actual books.

While I think that in the end most of the best stories are in reading format (manga, light novel, visual novels...) and are better explained there without the limits of time TV has, atleast for me I prefer anime because it makes everything more alive thanks to the music, the voices... and well, because they are animated.

Still, the moment when you read something and your mind starts imagining how everything would look like is something so amazing, but it also takes quite a lot more effort than watching the TV, that is more calm and sometime you can just turn off your brain and relax with a good story other than having to completely focus on what you're reading.

Most people prefer the visual medium even though technically manga is also a visual medium. And you're reading.... holy shit but you read subs on anime!
you sound poor

In my case, I have watched quite a lot of anime but I'm just getting into manga. Just look at my profile lol

I think it's bcos anime has well... animation and a soundtrack

I could do without animation but I love hearing the sounds

Well, I've finally made playlists that I'm satisfied with which is why I'm finally reading manga

I find that anime doesn't offer enough honestly.. I like it but I definitely prefer manga. Plus the best manga hasn't even been made into anime (yet)!!!! Only watching anime really limits your options.

I agree though, in the West anime seems to be a good starting point for people.

People prefer watching scenes then reading it. Instead of letting their imagination run wild by reading manga, anime does it for them by showing what's happening (not to mention in color also). I prefer watching the anime too over reading manga, but I still like reading manga, especially because manga tend to have better story adaptation then the anime adaptation. But if an anime and a manga were exactly alike, I'd choose watching the anime. Not many people are keen on reading, really.

Probably because it easier to introduce someone to anime(just sit them down in front of a monitor with you) , than its to introduce them to manga. And if that person is going about buying these properties through "legal means" than buying manga is more expensive than buying anime dvds.

In the entertainment industry, Anime is one the tool for creator of the manga to promote the manga
Higher rating anime can make the manga become popular too. Although this term doesn't happen in all countries
In my country, I could say that the popularity of anime and manga is almost in balanced.

I think there is one more reason.
I live in Poland and not all of manga are translated . And the access isn't easy either (you can buy it or borrow it from friend, but few people buy it anyway). And it's too expensive to buy whole series (Naruto and it's 72 volumes, or any other long series). And when i finish manga i don't read it again, and i have to sell it, because i don't need it, and it's to much work.
I love reading manga, but I have to read it online in english. Anime is translated into polish. And some people can't speak english or don't like reading with dictionary.

Simple, really. One gets exposed to anime first.

Manga, like anime that's not on TV, is something you seek out, tbh. Unlike in Japan, which has magazines that can promote various series, most countries don't have this kind of promotional vehicle.

Because The Manga industry in The Western world is dying, Anime however its bright and colourful and its easy for someone to just pick up and understand, like watching a TV episode without having to grasp the orientation of a Manga Book.

This is more true in the west than in actual Japan.

But it's basically because people would rather watch something than read something.
It's a shame, really. I much prefer the source material.

I can't say for everyone, but although I love to read I also read at a notably slow pace, so watching instead of reading means I get to experience more within a limited time frame (and life's been especially hectic for the past while so I don't even have the time to start reading most things if I want to complete then within half a year). Also listening to music while reading just doesn't do the same thing for me as having the sound made just for what I'm watching.

I think most people are addicted to animations, so they prefer watching anime than reading a manga. Anime are really good and a treat to watch. But I prefer manga, because original is always best.

I think reading a story takes more effort to do than watching a story play out in front of you with a set time limit. Some people may think that watching it will save them time, even though that is not always the case.

I think like most people said it's because people just like watching rather than reading. It's especially more true to those who watch anime dubbed rather than subbed.

Movies are more popular than their book counterparts. If you think of it in a school aspect, more kids prefer to watch a movie in class than read the book because they can relax during a movie while they have to focus on the book to read and imagine the scenarios themselves.

I however feel the opposite on this and I enjoy reading since it tends to give more details. And it is a different story for Japan. Again like people said it tends to be more of a Western thing which is a shame most people don't know how much they are missing. Plus you don't have to deal with fillers in manga

I guess it may be because people find watching something that's animated more entertaining or "lively" than reading. In my case I used to read more manga before but as I started watching more anime I kinda stopped doing so, but now that I've recently watched Elfen Lied and Higurashi I've also read both mangas in order to know all the details and understand the story better as many of them are not included in the anime.

I think it is because reading demands more time and dedication than watching.

I find it difficult to read books since I find most novels too long, and manga can be this way, which is why I prefer anime when it comes to long running manga and battle shounens like Bleach and Naruto.

I do agree that the manga is generally better than the anime, though.

If the anime is pretty true to the manga, but I may skip one or the other depending on which medium introduced me to the series first.
