Finally, a murder-less episode. I'm glad the crimes are starting to vary more, though I must give credit for the amount of options there are to murder.

The ending was very sweet, with Naoki crying and forgiving Hideo. Ran is pretty paranoid as well. Damn.

"How is this anything new? It's just a fax machine in a bento box!" LOL.

Good episode, didn't make sense when Shinichi ran off though because he was standing on cinder block to make the shadow but then no cinder block in shadow as he's running off. Meh. Hopefully that girl explains things to Ran! And pays up!

This was a pretty bad episode, Ran chasing after Conan is one of the most annoying things in the show. Especially when she gets in the way of cases. The case itself was bad all because of Hideo who was pretty much a dumbass.

Case File #10
The Pro Soccer Player Blackmailing Case

Important Milestone:
  • New Characters: The pro soccer players, Akagi Hideo and Uemura Naoki
  • New Gadget: Portable Bento Lunchbox Fax Machine: Basically a fax machine shoved inside a bento box.

As far as I know, for every remastered version of old episodes, Conan would have a cool opening speech talking about the theme of the episode. In this case, it's blackmailing, and it's a decent speech worth noting: "Blackmailing. The cowardly act of threatening a person for money or compelling them to commit an unwanted action. Blackmailing with a child is particularly difficult to forgive." The tone Conan uses during the speech really shows his pacifistic side and his inherent detest for crimes that threaten the lives of people, particularly children.

Not long after episode 7, Ran associates Conan with Shinichi once again. When a supposed ex-girlfriend of Shinichi comes visiting, she throws the angry look in the above picture towards Conan... I don't know if this means she's always known about his secret identity on a subconscious level, or she's merely agitated enough to throw a furious gaze at anybody, or if it's just bad writing. I couldn't care less, to be honest, since she doesn't directly accuse Conan of cheating on her and is merely taking her frustration out on a child, so this scene might merely exist for comedic purposes - and it worked, because I had a great laugh.

That being said, what I found to be annoying is that Conan is caught solving a case by Ran - AGAIN! Seriously, Conan! What the hell?! There are barely three episodes between 7 and 10! I mean, being this careless after 300 episodes is one thing, but THREE episodes... Sigh. I have to admit, however, that it is kinda funny to see how Conan get out of such sticky situations. And considering that he's a cocky teenager, it does make sense why he's acting this dumb. And to be fair, Ran didn't technically catch Conan solving a case this time - she caught Shinichi solving a case. The nuanced difference here does make it slightly more believable that Ran hasn't caught onto Conan's identity, but not much.

This episode also introduces one of the Professor's laziest invention yet - a bento box fax machine... Sigh. I'm just... at a loss for words.

All the small little problems aside, this was actually a pretty decent episode. The mystery here involves the blackmailing of a pro soccer player whose little brother is supposedly kidnapped. Unless he throws the game, his little brother will be killed. There's a short emotional moment here worth noticing, but not only is it kinda overplayed to a melodramatic level, Ran interrupts the sentimental confession and comedically interrogates the kidnapper about the whereabouts of Shinichi. For what it's worth, it at least turns the cheesy and sappy scene into a funny and entertaining one.

Last but not least, worth mentioning is the short tearful exchange between Ran and Shinichi at the end, when she questions him about his supposed ex-girlfriend. He runs away telling her "I hate to see you cry." Aww. I don't care how sappy it might be, this is my favorite part of the series - Shinichi's painful struggle to ease the sorrows of his girlfriend, something I wish I could see more of in the newer episodes.

★★★½

I don't agree with you. This episode was excellent and not just okay. I loved when Ran ran after Shinichi.
But I agree with you on the point that the next episode looks great.

I think that this is one of the weakest episodes so far but still liked the fact that it wasn't a murder case

A pretty calm case, with no murder. Pretty stupid how they disregarded the episode in which Ran figured out that Conan is Shinichi...

This ED keeps growing on me lol idk if Ran is dumb or what cuz any normal person would've connected the dots by now, especially as she had her suspicions before, I don't see how she's completely disregarded the possibility already
This anime shit is addictive

Ok, I guess this thing with Conan identity will last longer than I expected, but the episode itself was fine. A kidnapped kid that didn’t known that he was kidnapped until we found out that he didn’t was kidnapped. Wow

Sweet and entertaining! I like how the culprit's motive is often common feelings like envy, which get resolved in the end. They missed an opportunity to say "no, we won't call the police, we'll keep this a secret and so your relationship with Hideo won't change", but maybe that was implicit. Beautiful tears!
