| So my life has been going downhill for a long time, there is no question about that. I felt like I had hit a dead end, or the end of the line. I spent a lot of time speaking to people who were really experienced and knew me very well. They shared all kinds of stories, tips and ideas, and I spent weeks mulling them over. I came to the conclusion that the army is what I want. I'm tired of the grey areas. The army is black and white. You get told to do something, and you do it. I want to live in that solace. Furthermore, I want to feel like I'm worth something. Serving my country, making a difference, that is perhaps my purpose in life. Does anyone have any experience in the army? Any sort of tips/stories/help, anything that could give me an idea of what to expect? |

| No idea how's the army over there, but I can give you some tips. Never take the sergeants etc who keep barking at you too personally. It's just their job, they don't actually hate you. Make sure to do EXACTLY what you're told. No objections. Make sure to start training long before you enter, basic training should be enough. Lifting weights, stretching, stuff like that. Untrained will have hell in front of them in the army. It will be very frustrating and depressing, but try your best to keep your cool. Don't let it bring you down. Good luck! |

| I was going to join up, air force then a few years later after I left university the Navy but a mental health evaluation kind of stopped that progressing. I was like you, lost wanting the spartan life, straight forward, something to solely devote my time and focus to doing. A career path laid out clear, was getting tired of living vaguely day to day. Yeah if you're sure its a good option, I did a lot of research at the time, training is hard but not out of reach of someone averagely fit and mentally willing to take punishment. Have you thought about specialties or just going in for the soldier route because theres a ton of options like tank operators, radio communications and they all offer training and degrees for further advancement in those fields in civilian life. I just recommend watching some youtube videos of training, new recruit interviews, check out all the roles available, go on the site see what draws your attention. If you decide to join up still best to hit the gym now because the process takes some time and it'll give you the best start you can. Running cardio and endurance training is far more important than physical bulk training and then cut out everything else from your life I don't mean like stop talking to family or anything but focus all your attention and life on this thing, no distractions outside the base and your training. Live like a spartan soldier a life that revolves around his work path. I doubt you'll get much support or guidance here, most people tend to be so anti army that they won't even talk to you on the subject unless its to call you stupid for throwing your life away. Like any other choice and path in life is any different. I know theres a few ex armed forces people on Mal here and there should wait for them sure they can tell you more. Good luck soldier. |

| MAL is not the place to be asking for advice for anything army-related. The intellectuals will come to tell you how much better they are than you. Most of my family who went to the army came back fucked in the head. War is not something anyone should have to go through. Good luck is all I have to tell you. |

| I'm assuming you want information on basic training in particular, so I'll try and recount a few things. To start with though, if you haven't already taken the ASVAB, study for it. I don't know how bright you are or how well you perform on tests, but this score will determine the type of MOS you are eligible for. So if you know you do poorly on such things, look up some study guides and take the time to do well. Don't let a recruiter talk you into a MOS that you know isn't a good fit for you. Recruiters often get a bad rap, but they do tend to push for certain jobs that aren't popular but need filling. I remember mine wanted me to be a cook lol. Before you ship out, if you're not already a morning person, then get yourself on a early morning schedule. You want to be use to being up by at least 6. Also, if by some chance you do not currently have your social security number memorized, do it. You'll fill out a shitload of paperwork and they will all require it. Also, if you can memorize the rank insignia ahead of time you may save yourself some trouble later. I'll put the rest in spoilers so as to keep the forum clean as it will be quite lengthy describing basic. Anyhow, how you get to your base is going to vary by how far you are away from it. My recruiter actually drove me to the airport as it was a couple hours a way, then I flew and caught a bus. However you get there, you'll end up in reception. How long varies, could be one week, might be two. It's the Army, you'll become very familiar with the phrase "hurry up and wait" if you are in any length of time. Reception is pretty easy minus the waiting. You'll get your hair cut, get your BDU's, your PT sweats, your dog tags, military ID, fill out some paper work, see a dentist, eye doctor and all that good stuff. My experience Drill Sergeants here were typically pretty lenient, but your experience may vary. You will start doing physical training here, but from what I recall it was pretty light and mostly running. Did I mention you should get use to running prior to joining? I remember taking some classes during this period as well though I can't for the life of me recall what they were over now. You'll also take your first physical training test, it's pretty easy, but you do not want to fail this. I've only heard stories of 'fat camp' (name for where people who went that failed), so I can't say what it's like for sure, but I'm sure you can imagine what the purpose behind it is. After that, you'll eventually start basic. You'll bus there, the only advice I can give here is, when they tell you to get off the bus and line up, don't be slow about it, don't draw attention to yourself, and do not look a Drill Sergeant in the eye. People will be singled out and you don't really want to be among the first. The first couple weeks are likely to be the hardest. You'll lack sleep, have to eat faster than you're likely use to, and overall you'll have to adapt to performing under high levels of stress. You'll do pushups and a lot of them, for mistakes you make, for mistakes others make, get use to collective punishment. During all phases, you'll do a lot of PT, run a lot, be screamed at, and march a shitload, but if you can make it through those first two weeks, you adjust and things get much easier. Pay attention to the people around you too though. Sometimes it pays to help others, but recognize some people are not cut out for the military and won't make it. Your nerves etc may be on edge but don't lash out against people in your barracks. These are people you will have to work with the rest of your time there. Outside that, you'll learn basic first aid, how to read a map/compass, you'll repel a wall, fight with pugil sticks, and go through marksmanship training. You may have heard the line "this is my rifle, this is my gun, one's for shooting, the other's for fun" in the movies. While I have never heard that line in the entire time I was in the Army, it is true that you don't call your rifle a gun and doing so is likely to end with you doing some push ups. Moving on, you'll learn how to take apart and put an M-16A2 together and you'll experience the gas chamber. :) You'll be exposed to CS (tear) gas more specifically, it's not pleasant, but it won't kill you even if it feels like it will. Some people do vomit though and most everyone will have snot streaming down their face. Good times XD You'll go through several drills to foster teamwork, which is a large aspect of training and go through some live fire training exercises to acclimate you to combat and some of the things you would have to do in such. Things like carrying casualties (obviously no one actually dies), maneuvering under fire, etc. Then in your final week you'll do victory forge, which is a 3 day drill in which you apply everything you've learned as well as test your endurance. It's basically a simulation of a war time situation. You'll crawl under barbwire with lives rounds firing above, dig fox holes, pull guard duty, have to put your gas mask on when you see CS gas or it's called out etc. That's a rough outline at least. I'm not entirely sure how much has changed over the years and there are likely things I forgot. Suffice to say you want to do what your told as quickly and efficiently as possible and accept that your Drill Sergeant is always right, even when he/she isn't. If you can do that and adapt reasonably well you should be fine. Any other questions just ask, I know there's a few others who may share some insight as well. |

DawningFog said:Truth is, that's the sort of treatment I'm looking for. I have an unconventional military background, by which I mean I was raised as a soldier for a cause related to my family. I've veered off track in recent years, and following down the path I am currently on, I'll be more fucked in the head by the time I'm 50 than any war trauma could possibly do to me. Question though, is the army really the way to achive that? You will be risking your life. You will be killing people. You will be doing whatever action the government decides. You would be doing drills every day, be carted off to dusty middle eastern countries, etc. |

| @Duskie Although it was a joke my first comment was actually a subtle way of making you think about what it is that makes you want to join the military more and if it can or can not be obtained by other means. My comment after was a more serious answer to point out the more mundane or hazardous aspects since you did not like my joke and I do not know enough people who have been in the military to give a more detailed story. My sister has a friend who joined the military and she enjoyd her experience, I should note this girl was pretty tiny and id consider her pretty much im not sure the word for it soft? Like she was the kind of person youd never expect to join the military. I think it was hard on her but she did okay but I dont know her well so thast all I know of that. That's why i don't work at McDonald either. |

I've never hurt someone who didn't have it coming or didn't want to be hurt. I retract what I said then. Although... from the context, it was hard to infer whether you meant emotionally or sexually sadistic. That might pose a problem as well, there's one thing of avoiding shooting people you know are non-combatants There's another thing to not pull the trigger when you should have. Could you shoot a little girl? maybe 5 maybe 6? If she's holding a gun, you have to. |

I don't understand what you mean by orders. In a combat zone you don't have an officer yelling orders at everyone, maneuver warfare doesn't work like that, no combat works like that in general lol. Lets say... the RoE states any and all people who are armed are to be considered combatants.. Or better yet, let's assume that word has passed from command that you are clear to engage unarmed targets suspected of spotting enemy mortars or spotting enemy fire. Would you be able to make that judgement call, in the moment whether the guy you see is or isn't a threat. better yet, could you hold your fire when the RoE states you're only clear to engage if you've been engaged on first. Lets say you know for a fact that the person in front of you is an enemy but he isn't shooting at you. Would you be able to let that person go. |

| Well, if that's what you really want... Not sure how it is there, honestly. It can be a good way to make a living here or a way to pay for university, though most people that join dont take advantage of that. It doesn't make you more mature or anything, but it does help get you into shape. That's nice. The idea of serving your country is nice, I guess.. Though serving the people in a more direct way is nicer. Just make sure it's something you really want. Joining because you don't want to make decisions is an odd thing to say. Besides, it's not "black and white" anyway. |
