THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The animation and visuals was greatly improved upon but that's to be expected since the original was from the 80's. Glad to see the soundtrack and the VA's remain the same since I've read that in the next part most of them were changed.

Actually considering this was made after 2000 is quite shitty. The animation and visuals of this will be decent if it was made in the 90's not 2002.

Anyway mysterious man that no can resist? WTF? Seint Seya always has stupid plot though. Athena is the ultimate god for Saints. Their whole reason for existence is fighting for her and protecting her. This kind of plot twist are stupid. It doesn't matter who the fuck that guy is. NOTHING should make a saint prefer cutting Athena's head or not fighting for her.

Also Saori stupid as usual with the "i want to keep my bronze saints away so they won't get hurt attitude"(cause am certain that's why she wanted them away from sanctuary since she does this stupid shit in an old movie too).
Seriously Saori is the biggest damsel in distress ever and i bet she would again be all stupid and let herself get captured. Really shaming the name of Athena from Greek mythology that was actually quite a capable fighter.

The animation is slightly improved from the original, but considering it's 15 years later and in the early 2000's it's quite unimpressive.

It's good that most of the voices are kept the same. I immediately noticed that Mu's voice was different, but that is unavoidable since i see that Shiozawa, Kaneto passed away in 2000. He was the great voice actor of Oberstein from LOGH, so RIP.

It's weird they don't explain what happened after the Poseidon arc. I mean, why the heck is Saori at the sanctuary and not her mansion. Or why the other bronze saints are there? I mean a simple explanation could have clarified it!

Very interesting and different from the way the original was. Even the tone in the opening and ending is way different than the tragic but heroic songs and visuals we got then. These ones seemed far more emotional on an individual level rather than as a whole if that makes sense. The old openings seemed to portray the heroic battle and journey and the old ED's seemed to reflect the tragedies that came with it, to me at least. Here it seems to showcase the saints individually going through their own problems. Also, the new OP and ED and the old OP and ED both played in my version, is that normal?

At first, I thought the masked man was Saga. He was the head saint in the sanctuary I presume, whereas with him gone Old Master was the second in charge, and Mu was the third in charge. Saint Seiya has always been about hierarchical structures where duty is absolute regardless if you have suspicions or doubt but... like @Monad I'm still hella confused. If they are ordered by the head saint to disobey their entire purpose in life and kill Athena I do not see why that would override their duty to protect Athena. It totally shouldn't. So, I have to imagine there's more at play than just that. However, I think the way Mu acted resembled him refusing to go against Athena but also refusing to go against duty towards a saint higher than him in the hierarchy, so maybe I'm onto something? Otherwise, I could see something else is at play perhaps, such as some ultimate figure that they cannot disobey no matter what and as silly as that is I shall wait for more to be unveiled to speak on it. It feels like way more is going on than just Saga being a specter though, because:
1. Wasn't his goal to rule with power so he could stop Poseidon and Hades?
2. The Athena statue being drenched in shadow, as well as the headless statue in its hand being shown symbolically over and over again especially with the episode starting with Hades meeting Athena and slashing her with his scythe, seems to imply there is MUCH more going on here.

I love the use of old music and voice actors. When the Pegasus Ryu Sei Ken theme came on I was ecstatic. Saint Seiya has some magnificent music.

Something that caught me off guard was the use of Hyoga having one eye bandaged off and Shiryu in the preview having his blindfold on. Sure, Isaac may have permanently damaged Hyoga's eye but isn't this past Poseidon arc canonical? If so, Shiryu should not be blind. I'm just jumping to conclusions due to the preview though so no one spoil and answer me unless it's a clarification of where this lays canonically. If it does come after Poseidon it makes sense why their clothes are so devastated. I suppose Saori could have felt Hades would come soon and that's why she went to the Sanctuary, Hades did meet her there after all, and that could have been why she ordered the saints not to come. I hope it's for a reason better than their safety, but I also think making sure they fight together with properly fixed cloths is not a bad idea especially if she didn't know mystery man would come and turn her gold saints against her.

Very interesting start, I was glued to the screen. That said, with how complex this mystery is right now I think it could either have a good pay off or end up feeling really weak depending on how it goes.

@gfsdfgsdgsdfgs

This new arc is canon and chronologically comes right after the Poseidon arc, and Shiryu is blind here because he had lost the sight (again) during his battle against Krishna (the Indian Ocean pillar guardian in Poseidon).

Btw I'm very glad you liked the original. Not only is very hard to find users here trying this series for the first time as adults given how old it is, but also, among the few ones who try it, it is very hard to find ones who claim to have genuinely enjoyed it.

Ah right! I took a huge break in the middle of the Poseidon arc and that detail slipped my mind. Poor Shiryu... Thanks for the reminder. I may just have to go back and rewatch that fight, it was really cool.

I loved the original! I have noticed many being critical of it in these threads and although I understand where they are coming from, Saint Seiya really resonates with me.

Yeah the tone changed but I loved the new OP and ED anyway! When I rewatched these OVAs last year I had both old and new OP and ED playing too.

Obviously I can't answer and I don't like to hype something too much cause different people have different opinions but I think you're in for a treat!! This part 1 of the OVAs is the best rated on MAL (8.18) for a reason. :D

This is exactly what I felt when I watched it for the first time, not only this episode but the whole arc.

One thing I've learned through watching Saint Seiya, especially with how Saga and Kanon and even Asgard gave mixed signals when you first saw them, is that this friggin show hasn't disappointed yet and every time I doubt what it's doing it subverts those doubts and gives me something great!

It's nice to fill these threads with some positivity. I'm very excited to continue on with the arc. :)

I had delayed giving a chance to what is supposed to be the follow up to the original series despite clearly trying to be more faithful to the manga because Why would Shiryu be blind again? Why is Saori preferring to sleep like she's part of the Flinstones? But once the Look! We got CGI animation! Look at that tear! DIGITAL! shots went by and the melodramatic stuff started to pour out I was completely hooked.

Death Mask still annoying and Aphrodite fabulous as always.

Seiya, kid, why did you went with those tattered clothes.

THE BEST OF SAINT SEIYA !!!!!  πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘  SO GLAD and BEST MOVE watching this right after the Sanctuary Arc. Instead of sitting around for the next 40 episodes of Bronze Saints "skirmishes" And already watched Sanctuary and Lost Canvas to know these dudes XD With just a little added information like
can jump straight in !!!!! GOGOANIME even has the MOST ICONIC Pegasus Fantasy and ending put in the episode. YES the Sanctuary Arc was iconic because we had the opening/ending and the struggle VS. the Gold Saints which was part of why I sat through so long of it but IT PAYS OFF TODAY. I finally get to see how the Gold Saints will fight against the enemy after all the haughtiness and sitting around on their butts.

UNDERRATED Watch Order:

Lost Canvas, Sanctuary (12 temples), Hades arc XDDD  πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

lol at people saying the animation is improved from the original. Traditional ink-and-paint animated anime from the 80s and 90s look better than any digital ink-and-paint animated anime from the early 2000s, which have aged horribly and look like shit to me, so the animation in Hades Chapter - Sanctuary looks like shit to me, just like those other digital ink-and-paint anime from the early 2000s. It's not "improved". They just changed the animation from traditional ink-and-paint to digital ink-and-paint, and it's a downgrade, not an improvement. Apart from the stiff animation, the original Saint Seiya anime still looks way better than this. The only thing that makes the OVA better is that it doesn't have stiff animation like almost every anime from the 80s. Still hoping the first 135 episodes of Naruto get remade someday, since that's from the early 2000s and just doesn't look good visually today.
