What I took after finishing this series was that it felt real. It felt genuine. It's a nice change of pace from the slice of life, the comedies, or the action thrillers that I've been mostly watching these last couple of years. There are some recent shows like White Album 2 (to a lesser extent) that give off that similar vibe, but there's something about Shigatsu that made it so much more impactful. I haven't felt like this since watching Kimi ga Nozomu and Welcome to the NHK.

Not surprisingly, all three shows have great soundtracks. Overall, it's a well-executed show coming from A-1 Pictures.

A year ago, I read of all the praise Shigatsu was receiving, but didn't pay too much attention to it. 2015 was a slow year for me in terms of watching anime. I dialed it down compared to previous years and mostly watched on the whim. I'm glad to finally add this one into my list.

It was OK... Needless to say I powered through the Anime like I do most ones I enjoy watching. It felt like it was purposely set up to end in a depressing way, almost like it was forced to result in a un conclusive way. It left many viewers giving theory's and ideas which for most media is a great thing because it brings people together to discuss and review, but in this case it felt empty, unsatisfying if you will. I definitely couldn't "cry" there was to much comic relief moments for my taste. Definitely not a "bad" anime, just one I wouldn't go crazy about.

Can't get the ED2 song outta my head and keep picturing Kaori lying in the water with tears flowing out of her eyes....

I hope to get over this soon, but is anyone else wondering why Arima waited a while before opening the letter? If you remember, it was snowing the day of the funeral and when you see the group walking together. It seems like he doesn't open it until much later, there was no longer any snow on that day.

To be honest, I didn't cry until the last episode because there is no reason to get emotional until it actually happens. When it did, I cried my eyes out.

When Kaori kept telling Kousei to not forget her, remember her, and all that sorts it hit home. My fiance is the same way, in that it is his life goal to not be forgotten, to be someone to somebody. And.... oh my god, here comes the waterworks... I cannot imagine someone so important in my life to die in that way... to not see them every day, or hear their voice. So, this anime did a good job at pulling my heart strings.

9/10.

Why? I knew it was coming. I brased for it. I still cried my heart out. This is why I love animation. This is why I love entertainment. It moves people. It gives a voice to those who can't. It's art. There's no doubt about it. My journey is only just begun...

I don't know, that wasn't the ending that I'm looking for nor satisfied with

But decent ending
Beautiful ost & musics
I didn't regret watching this anime at least :)

The "lie" is the most beautiful and obvious lie that I've ever seen though

Absolutely loved it, we need more romance animes like this.

However, is it just me or is this series a reflection of a best case scenario for a stalker? That's sort of what Kaori seemed to me after Arima read her letter.

Also, I know it was a music anime but piano playing and the competition itself (while getting nostalgic) was like half the anime itself.

i had finished rewatching angel beats when i started watching this anime and i was not prepared to cry much more. i'm a sucker for corny romantic anime, it had it faults but every anime does. all i can say is this is one of my favorites.
it was especially more touching cause i enjoy music as much as Kousei and Kao and i also play piano. towards the end i knew Kao was going to die but i wasn't mentally prepared for it at all, i cried like a baby.
as far as Kousei and his whole mom situation, i feel like since Kao didn't scar him like his mom, so he can move on and continue playing piano for Kao's sake.
i didn't mind the anime being more focused on the competitions and performances, for a while i didn't like it but then i excepted that it gave us a little more background on each character that had to perform and to me, it made this anime more touching
i didn't see the lie coming, i was shocked at how badly Kao wanted to meet Kousei and it made my heart more happy knowing that she loved him
overall this was an enjoyable anime for me.
i haven't watched much anime and i'm not very picky so 10/10 for me.
just my opinion

Although I usually don't watch music/sports related anime, I thought I'd give this one a shot and I just finished this today. All I can say is that the ending wasn't what I had expected it to be. :/ I thought they would have a chance to play one last duo together before Kaori died, but disappointingly no. IMO it would of been much better that way and more sadder at the same time. As I am not into musical anime's, I didn't get the "I need to watch one more, one more episode" feeling but I got drawn into it somehow. Overall, I would say it was a good anime, probably a 7.5 or an 8/10.

Heh.....good show. Can't say i "felt" the sadness maybe due to random comic-serious transitions or just that each ep 4shadowed her death.

Tsubaki was always with him- in sadness or in celebration, and Kousei acknowledged it too. Well I was kinda shipping Emi and him.............but still he's now a HS student.

Was 80% sure Kaori liked Kousei all along and her "lie in april" was this only, but it also included her knowing of him from 5 yro.

Not gonna lie, this wasn't my favorite of anime's. It's not that I didn't like it; I just wasn't that into it. That last episode, however, was fucking amazing. It actually managed to pull some emotional strings. I DO believe that it ended far to abruptly. I believe they should have made one last episode, just to tie up loose ends. Still, I fucking loved this last episode. Because of it, this anime ranks pretty highly on my list.

"This is poetry in an art form of an anime, which brought music to life". After watching and visualizing this fine poetry. Ask yourself "Should I move on, and not look back?" The answer is "Yes!" Because you just witnessed a cherry blossom like poetry that rocked your world! "Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso".

Quote by unknown: "You can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one."
Quote by Brook (One Piece) - Oda Eiichiro: "No matter how deep the night, it always turns to day, eventually". Yohohoho~

In ways, this anime gave into the core of music and a musicians life. I would like to talk about the anime itself (story line, music, artistry, cliche, allusion, and so on). However, it'll take quite a while to write, so I'm choosing not too. But, I would like to talk about the music, and how people use music as their emotion; Also, people's story of their life.

When reading the manga or watching the Anime of Shigatsu wa kimi no Uso, the anime gave a strong step of music and staying on tact of the main story; plot line. (I don't want to go into depth through this, but I just want to share this fine art of an anime).

People in this time and world are suffering. The amount of suicide is somewhat decreasing, but the amount of evil is increasing. The reason that I'm getting into this topic is because this anime gave me a wide opening site of life and of others. If you read my previous comment, it would make sense. I mean, after you read this anime, have you ever sat down and think of only life in ways of others instead of yourself? I know, "this is just an anime, it's not real life dude", but I'm leaning into the allusion of this anime (even though, I said that I wouldn't talk about the allusion of this anime. Well, it's too late).

I'm surprised that you're still reading this comment, lol. But, wait; don't go yet. I wanna say something that you probably may or may not know, but hey, it's great to be reminded more than once, right? "You reap what you sow". Now, you may know this or you may not, but do you remember the golden haired girl kaori-chan? She reaped what she sowed! It's amazing! Did it or didn't it make you disappointed that she lied? But, didn't it cheer you up that she encouraged other's? This anime is more so on living life to the fullest, even though you have a sickness like she has... still encourage those around you! Don't think about yourself, and say "I'm going to end this life of mine because I can't bear this suffering and pain, no longer...",DON'T! Because you witnessed a cherry blossom that rocked your world to the core!!! Shigatsu wa kimi no Uso. Be encouraged, there are those, who are dying to see you; to meet you; to love you! This is an art of life. Music itself can change one's life because of the story itself. YOU can. Remember, your attitude is everything.

Haha, if she died its predictable. If she lives it's predictable. Characters are horrible and poorly written. Wasted potential. Does anybody watch anime for the sake of enjoyment anymore instead of scrounging for things to nitpick? This show used every bit of potential it had, don't kid yourself. Just because the author didn't tell the story you wanted to hear doesn't make the story any worse. The characters reminded me exactly Toradora, a show praised for its lovable characters. Kousei and Kaori had great chemistry as well as the three supporting characters.

People complain about Wataris lack of a complex story, but it doesn't need it. Watari was there as a tool for Kaori to get to Kousei, if you grow to attached to Watari when Kaori admits that she lied, you side with Watari which is a bad idea. The story was about Kousei, and his mental growth. He learned that even when you lose someone dear, there will be others who value you and your well being. I think the premise and execution was fantastic. If I had a complaint, it would be the artsy dialogues, those got a litter awkward at times but never were overdone. The art is beautiful, the animation is smooth and gorgeous, the soundtrack is the most underrated in years. For anyone who likes music and romance, watch this. But watch this with an open mind. Don't go into it with a shovel ready to dig into it as soon as you find a soft spot. Anime isn't about ratings or being right, its about looking for beauty in unexpected places. For me, I definitely found a ton of it here. 10/10

This, THANK GOD someone actually managed to convey what I was feeling. I was already losing my faith in this community (no in truth I already lost it long time ago). Some people just bitch too much, you need to know when you should and should not cross the line, when you should stop seeing everything so in detail, focusing on every little aspect, that is NEVER good! Everything is flawned by nature and we are the most flawned in existence.
And so what, I dont see a problem with that, and I definitly dont see the problem with this anime neither!
I wouldnt give it a 10 though, since it had some aspects that it could had been better at. And you could argue that at times it tries to hard, the foreshadowing was too strong for my tastes, I prefered it more subtle. I also wanted to know what was her disease, doenst seem to be cancer after all, also they only performed once together! I was expecting to see them so many more times, that was disappointly sad.
OST is simply amazing, visuals were awesome too. As for the characters, Kousei was honestly my favorite, I enjoyed Kaori the second most, but this definitly is the story of Kousei "coming of age", and I would definitly like to see more his promising rise in the career of being a pianist.

I m glad I gave this series the specific moment to watch it. With the coming of the spring, you really cant go wrong with seeing Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. What a beautiful and sad lie. A lie that should had not been told, a lie that she should had exposed by herself. But again, time and time she done it, there were may hints that she loved Kousei, and even if it would be cliche, I was expecting a confession before she died, I would had liked that...

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso felt like a little letdown to me. In my opinion, the first episodes are awesome, but after the middle of the show it goes downhill (except for a pair of nice episodes, such as the last ones).
On the one hand, I think that the OST is really good, along with the OP and ED (mainly the second ones), which are pretty beautiful too. Besides, I've discovered some amazing classical pieces thanks to this anime, like Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. In addition, I found the art/animation well crafted and up to standard.
On the other hand, I consider that there is too much melodrama displayed. I also didn't enjoy the "comedy", which was mostly out of place, the extremely slow pace, the overreactions of the characters and the plot, which didn't seem solid enough to me and, sometimes, incredible (the hypocrisy around the mother matters, for example).
To be honest, I had high hopes for this show, but it turned out to be a disappointment. However, I have to say that the musical performances were outstanding and, overall, it was a fine watch.

P.S.: there were some very inspiring quotes from the characters about music, which can be applied to life in general. Although Watari was a bundle of nerves and a very typical character, I think that he was the real deal, mostly when talking with Kousei.

Arima is worst than Shinji of Evangelion.
Predictable plot, cliche episodes, forced drama.

I already glanced the manga, but it hurts even more watching the episode itself.

For once, it's really sad that Kaori's surgery didn't work out which met her fate. It's probably around the time during Kousei's performance when she appeared near him playing the violin along with him with the piano. Once she disappeared, poof, it's all over. Rest in peace, Kaori, you funny girl.

Of course, the "lie" is finally exposed. I don't know why she would just introduce herself to him but yet again their first meet was spectacular and beautiful in the first episode. Through the start till end, I love how Kousei has grown more maturely within his music and perhaps his character, all thanks to Kaori, who then says in the letter that she loves him. Ah, here goes the faded romance.

Overall, it was really a nice story. It may have some problems such as comedy being too forced and Watari not having enough airtime. I definitely love the animation and the music is eargasm, yo. The adaptation from its manga is really well-done as well. At least all (or most) of the important bits are in the anime, which is great!

I made this account to say one thing, the ending of this anime is complete trash. The entire story is soooo cookie cutter, its a simple tragedy-rebirth story. I knew ho it was going to end after their first performance. I like the art and music, but hate all the melodrama and random outbursts from all the characters, the ending is so unsatisfying.

Final episode was quite good. The pacing in the first part was slow again, but what was shown did not need much pacing, it brought us a good musical performance.
Latter part was directed pretty good. The show did not have much of a direction, but they knew how to conclude it, and that worked pretty well in my book.

9/10 for the episode (decutions for first part pacing and that Tsubaki kick - it was close for working as comig relief, but no cigar, it still did destroy the mood for me)
7/10 for the show as a whole (good animation, nice music and anctual feels induced save it from a score under 5 which it would have gotten mostly for pacing which at times totally destroyed my enjoymentlevel)

I loved how the show didn't make me cry because she died.

I cried because of the letter and how she effected people and got effected by them. It was so sweet and emotional and I loved it.

I don't think this show could've have a better ending, I finished the show in 2 days.

Great music, great storytelling and great characters. If anyone is saying MC is too sad and depressive, they clearly never lost someone or can't empathize.

Also, the fact that she was sitting with Emi and chose to play violin because of him was just a great writing. Such a passionate and emotional anime, one really can feel the love from it.

This anime definitely reached me.

9/10 overall.

The romance in this show( between Kousei and Kaori), is the driving point of the entire show, one of its major themes and yet its always thought to not exist at all by quite a few people due to the subtlety of it all. This was one hell of an episode and as one of the few, if not only, anime with fullblown unconditional love between the two main leads as a pivotal theme, breaks straight into my top 10. This anime is indeed a great sight to behold.

Even though I cried a river, I'm not sad. I'm happy, for what Kaori always wanted, she was able to achieve it.
Even with the way things ended, that letter was the best thing that happened.

I adored her, not because of her cuteness as a character or whatever, but because of how she valued life.

The lines , "That was the spark. That's when I started running." was when my heart skipped a beat.
I remember throughout the show she enjoyed so much of the little things that most people just take for granted and ignore in their daily lives. That letter confirmed that she lived the best life anyone could when they know they're not going to be in the world for long. That's why I'm happy. Her love was there for her when she needed him the most. She ate all the sweets she wanted to, not caring about the future. The people she was able to reach to, I doubt those people will ever forget her. She never stopped smiling. I won't forget. She was so happy, it feels unfair...

This anime really hit close to home for me. It never specifically said what illness Kaori had but I assume it was something like kidney failure -- all the symptoms matched what a friend of mine had. Having to constantly be on fluids, seizures, not being able to control parts of the body, etc. I was really hoping Kaori would have a successful surgery but now I'm bawling my eyes out because it feels like I lost my friend all over again. It's not fair but it's realistic.

Shine bright, Ellie. I love you but it's not goodbye because like Kaori's inside Arima, you're still inside me.

This Anime was one of the best I've watched, and the ending is the best I've ever seen, brought me into tears, I'm so sad the Kaori is gone, but I love how Arima is strong now, and how he played the piano imagining the Kaori was with him as if he knew that she was gone already !
And the plot twist where Kaori loved him ever since she was a kid and her lie was to get to him, my heart can't take it!
And coming to Tsubaki and Watari, l feel sorry for them somehow I think Watari got attached to Kaori and Tsubaki still didn't give up on Arima.
I give this 100 points. loved it!

The story is very realistic so you get very strong at heart and music always at the right moment , what I liked most was that the play never played the score as it is, if that made his melody playing their feelings ... certainly a beautiful anime

I thought that this episode was great and the show overall but i agree that this anime was definitely overhyped. My tear ducts exploded when Kosei was reading the letter and when he realized that Kaori passed away. One of the flaws that i have with show is that there wasn't enough of Emi and Aiza which was really unfortunate as the relationship between them and Kosei was my favorite thing all throughout watching the show. It was also kinda sad that Kaori confessed after she died instead of when she was still alive in front of Kosei.but Overall, I give this show an 8/10 but if it hasn't been for the melodramatic and some force comedy, This would of been 9/10 in my opinion. BEST GIRL = KAORI! i will definitely miss this show and will stay with me for a very long time.

Yeah she was basically dead from episode 3 on where all the death flags had keeping flown towards her.
Of course, that wouldn't stop the melodramatic approach all the time ...

7/10 only because I love Classical music and the psychology of Arima was quite interesting.

I died a little today... it wasn't so bad watching the outcome but the more I thought about it over in my head and applied it to real life the deeper I sunk. This 14 yr old girl knows shes going to die soon & intentionally doesn't get too close to the boy she really has feelings for & wants to get to know and instead keeps an arms length away until nearly the very end. She only got to play her dream with him one time T-T. I'm depressed.. Amazing animation, loved all the characters, music was spectacular, hated the ending but pretty good story, theirs minor things that bother me but as a hole this was very well done. My heart aches...
