When I set the video to "Stretch to Window" it looks like this in fullscreen: http://i.imgur.com/hJVJEaj.png and when I set it to "Touch Window from Inside" it looks fine: http://i.imgur.com/racGXS0.png but I just don't like the black bars on the side of the screen.
This anime is in 480p, but when I watch other anime that's 720p it looks fine, for example: http://i.imgur.com/vYRXTBA.png it doesn't look that bad, same as this: http://i.imgur.com/HNnX6pz.png

Is there any way to get rid of the bars on the side without having to stretch it to fit into the screen? everything looks so flat when it's stretched. I don't know how to make it fullscreen without it stretching or zooming it in so much that half of the anime is blocked out. It's mostly anime that's only in 480p that I'm having problems with.

It's not a problem, it's just that most older anime are made at a 4:3 ratio and your screen is 16:9. You can't get rid of the bars without distorting the image.

I was kind of worried someone would say that.

You'll get used to it after a while. There are too many good anime in 4:3 to not watch them just because of some black bars.

Alternatively, you could look for some TFT 4:3 Screens. I have one for Website reading, but even so, I'm still using a normal 16:9 HD Screen, because it's easier to watch something.

not to be a dick but I have to wonder what you were expecting. The only way to get rid of the black bars is to fill it with something, and you don't want a stretched image...

Or you can crop it and make the ratio HD-worthy.

^ninja'd, this is what i'm referring to.

are you watching dub? if you like you can crop the video to have a 16:9 aspect ratio, though the details above and below will be removed. it's not recommended with subbed anime since the subs are included in the cropping.

But you'll still take damage!

It's not recommended with anything, since you lose part of the image.

yeah, and tell that to kai and yugioh remastered, that's what they did to make a 16:9 ratio.

Get a different player.
That allows you to choose aspect ratios.

You can't change the aspect ratio of a video just like that.

Yeah i used to love stretching the screen because I absolutely despise black bars but recently I've come to realize it looks best in its original aspect ratio. Much more natural and just overall nicer.

All the old anime have this blur effect as well. I fkn that coz it makes it much worse though.....it does add something to the atmosphere.

You really can, you can set the video to play at 16:9 4:3 etc etc.

a 4:3 video when you change it to 16:9 it will stretch and fill the pillarbox(that's what you call the two black bars at the side of a 4:3 video)

if you want to change it to 16:9 without stretching you can crop it, but that will remove some parts of the video from top and bottom, look at any old remastered series like Kai and Yugioh, that's what they did to have a 16:9 aspect ratio.
