What do you think of the K-on! animation style Haruhi?

So after reading through the episode discussion threads, and seeing people say things like "is it just me, or does the animation look a little different?" and even some people refuting that and saying the animation is exactly the same... I felt it was necessary to start up an entirely separate thread to address one glaringly obvious fact:

KyoAni is using the K-ON! facial expressions/animations for Haruhi. Sure, Kyon and Itsuki look pretty much the same as S1 (with perhaps some features from Haruhi-chan, and a version up in bishiness for Itsuki), but Haruhi's facial expressions are borrowed straight from K-ON!, not S1 Haruhi. Eye and mouth design are the most obvious differences. The moe factor of K-ON! involved having the upper set of teeth inside a round mouth. S1 Haruhi usually showed no teeth, and had a straight-ish upper lip line with a curved mouth opening below. This mouth shape happens in S2 as well, but always with the teeth.

With that being said, I don't have anything against K-ON! nor Haruhi S2, but it makes Haruhi look a lot younger and ditzier than in Season 1. Her moe factor has gone up, but I think she lost a little bit of the God-factor in my eyes as a result.

Thoughts?

I noticed it rather early on when the ED came out...Mikuru looked a little like Tsumugi (ok maybe my eyesight is screwed but nvm), and Haruhi in the closing shot looked almost exactly like Yui.

Not that it's bad or anything.

the original animation was better... honestly i do miss it. k-on was good, but i'd prefer the two stay separate shows.

yeah i agree with this

i enjoyed the art for K-On as far as the kind of show K-On was, it works with that but i personally don't like it in Haruhi season 2 and it's fairly obvious that some of the K-On artwork has rubbed off on Haruhi Season 2

so yah, dl'd the first epi real quick to see what you were saying, zipped in a few minutes to a classroom scene and was distracted the whole time by the teeth. it is weird, tho i probably would have dismissed it if i hadn't read this.
anyway, gonna be a heck of a time trying to watch it all again with that showing up in only certain epis :)

Considering that K-ON! was also made by KyoAni and that it was very well-received only makes it obvious that second season is going to be better than the first.

Yeah, i noticed that.
Haruhi's face looks a lot like Yui´s face and Mikuru-chan looks like Tsumugi.
Also, Haruhi has lost a little of her Godish style.
I think this is only me, but i think Mikuru-chan's voice actor also got some of Tsumugi's style. This is just my feeling, can't say for sure.
And I feel Kyon and Yuki are a little different too.

I love both shows and like the new themes for s2.
I don't really mind if a few changes are done.
But I can't stand the artwork from K-ON! on Haruhi and Mikuru faces.
It's really annoying. Now, everytime i see them i remember K-ON!
The artists should've stick to the original artwork!!

It sucks.

Seriously, I can't even pay attention anymore because of how Haruhi looks more like Yui than Haruhi. She's like a carbon copy of her now, but with slightly different hair. I miss the Haruhi that actually looked like God.

This is just a theory, I haven't compared them yet.

But the animation might of been like that all along, you've just only noticed it now because K-On is recent and it was more noticable.

Like I said, just a theory, could be wrong.

Well, Kyoto Animation's style has been shifting all the time. Like compare Clannad and Clannad AS, they are different. Clannad (as an older series) is animated the same way as Haruhi S2. Clannad AS is very close to K-ON and the Haruhi S2 is animated the same K-ON-ish way too.

I too didn't really notice the difference nor do I really care all that much about it. It looks good, that's what matters to me.

What if this becomes KyoAni's style for the upcoming years? Will people still complain "it looks like shit"? If so, please go ask if they need any animators, as I take it you can do better then.

I've only watched one episode of season 2 haruhi (That being the first) and I've picked it up.

Was planning to marathon this show when it's done, but the endless 8 comments gives me second thoughts. (Which is a shame, cause I loved endless 8 on manga since it didn't last long and it's pretty interesting in one way, guess 8 episode is just ridiculous.)

A bit late to the party, but it really pisses me off. I like the K-on animation and characters, but that show is based on moe comedy. Haruhi had its own style in season one that matched the light novels really well. The Haruhi in season 2 looks like a crap copy off of K-on which throws the whole scene off. It looks like a face of one of the K-on characters was randomly placed where it wasn’t supposed to be; it just doesn’t flow. I hope that this won’t continue into the other Haruhi series or the Disappearance, since it just ruins the art style and conflicts with Haruhi’s character. Kyoto Ani’s projects need to be kept separate.
