8.91 !?! how the heck did that happened!?
I'm gonna rate it up to 8/10 because of the execution of this last episode. Truthfully it was elegantly beautiful. From the start of the acoustic ED1 and acoustic full 2nd part of ED2.
only comedy part is the BL nature part of Kashiwagi Nao.

yeah i was hocked when rating crossed 8.7 itself..MAL community are going crazy..tht's too overhyped..this definitely can't be the 13th all time best anime..this is not worth anywhere near comparable to clannad 2..sure it had some feels but death flags were there pretty much through out the second half..so the ending was not unexpected..the music was decent but the story had better potential..

rating: 8/10 max

yea...it usually happens on the 1st few weeks after the last episode finishes airing, It'll definitely go down maybe 8.80 next month or so on...maybe lower.
Rank #13 is too much for this genre.

Beautiful anime. I was super suprised by the story told by Kaori in the end. That was probably the most beautiful part of this anime.

10/10 without a doubt.

despite her death being foreshadowed right from the start where she gets off at the station at the hospital after tsubaki alights, and i've been spoiled about her death, i still cried tons at the letter.

-1 for tsubaki: selfish, selfish, selfish! my jaw dropped when she went all "i h8 music because it takes kousei away from me!! boohoo!" ?!?! is that how you're going to treat your best childhood friend who you also like???

anyway, yeah. tsubaki. so.

LOL, I want to punch the mangaka or the editor!! Seriously.

Is happy ending too cliche to make!? Well, seems like there are times when we want a happy ending, and also times when we critic a happy ending. But for this one, I REALLY DO WISH A HAPPY ENDING!!

Ok, overall, very good series. When u look it carefully, the plot or main story isn't something really special. But the execution and production value of this anime really made it a very good series.

For me, the melodrama is still highly tolerable. I've seen many worse melodrama series (not anime) than this one.

Such wasted potential, sigh.At first i was loving this show, but after watching more episodes it was becoming worse and worse. They started dragging Kaori's drama (and drama in general) like crazy, to the point i had enough of it.They made it look like some characters are super important, but in reality it's like they didn't give a damn about those characters.Just...so many things they/author could've done to make this better.
It's not like it was THAT bad, but it's just that i'm really dissappointed.

That was the greatest performance yet, completely awe struck by the visuals and imagery used especially when Arima and Kaori began their farewell duet. I couldn't even hear my own breathing as the piece went on, as if it was demanding my utmost attention via completely deafening silence.

Kaori's death has been built up to this whole time, but it felt very sudden when it skipped to Arima receiving the letter from her parents. My mindset at that time was something like "Oh, she really died, imagine that. I guess it was...wait...what....no....don't....do this...to me.." It slowly sank in and the emotions began to leak out bit by bit throughout Kaori's farewell letter. It's as if my emotions were being led by a faint crescendo until it was overflowing and overwhelming.

The letter itself didn't say anything unexpected or unknown, but I really liked the bit about how Kaori began living life to the fullest. That she started to make the trivial, mundane things shine and become unforgettable. This message seems to keep coming back to me in anime and it's one I never want to forget either. Kaori was a storm that completely swept Arima off of his feet. I liked how Arima often described her as short tempered, violent, and poor mannered. But beautiful. It really humanized her character to see her behave like a normal girl, which gave her that extraordinary image.

It's not really that this series did anything groundbreaking with the story or characters or even the themes, but the execution was just phenomenal. The stunning visuals, the resounding music, the poetic monologues. The way the music took physical form and was able to seize all of my senses by force. By doing this, the music transformed the characters. It became freedom. Yes, I loved and ate up all of that melodrama as well. This is truly a work of art.

9.5/10, I'm really leaning either way right now. Less than a week away from April. Liar.
Took every word straight out of my mouth, thank you.

Finally finished Your Lie in April today.

A fantastic and beautiful series. The last episode really put a lot of weight on the rest of the season and closed a lot of holes in the story. From a writing perspective, I liked that a lot.

The show is definitely not perfect however, and suffers from some pacing issues and/or repetitiveness. Being 22 episodes, not quite a full 2 cour show and with the source material at only 11 volumes, I feel they were purposefully stretching 'certain' parts out longer than needed. And other parts suffered being condensed. Good example was the piano competition in December. I don't think we got to see Kousei play at all. The first half of the series was definitely a little slower. I think they could've toned down the number of flash backs and got quicker to the point with a lot of the dialogue in the middle.

Budget perhaps? I'll get to that later.

But still, overall very good. Probably worth it to just read the manga if you wanna grasp just the story, however the anime does provide a very fitting soundtrack through selected classical pieces. I really enjoyed Chopin pieces they played.

If anything the last episode is something to behold as it looks like they blew 50% of the budget on that last episode or something. There is suppose to be an OVA, I can't imagine them adding anything more to this.

I loved Nagi's side story; she was adorable as the much needed loli in the series (lol). it provided additional character development for Kousei, some humor and pushed the story forward. But in retrospect I feel it wasn't entirely necessary, all the points above could've been written in without introducing a new character.

[b]I do have a question. Why would Kaori want to play the violin instead of the piano? Just because she wanted to Kousei to play piano for her? Like in general or as an accompaniment?[b]

Quickest 24 minutes i have ever experienced. Some people may say this anime is overrated, but I love the way that Kousei and Kaori express their love for each other. It isn't like usually conventional means like in other slice of life, romances. The way they do it is very hard to explain but I thought it was very well executed. Even though the audience knew what was to come of Kaori, I love the way the show wrapped up. I don't usually give animes 10/10, but this has to be an exception. I cried way more than I should have in the end =(

I absolutely loved the part when Kaori appears and then starts playing the violin along Kōsei. The moment she started to vanish was really sad. It was a very well done scene, in my opinion. But what really got me was Kaori’s letter to Kōsei. That part was pretty emotive to the point I suddenly wanted Kaori to magically come back to life).

Honestly, I was hoping for a happy ending with Kōsei and Kaoru ending together (as a future couple and as fellow musicians (duo)). Even though it didn’t happen, I thought the ending overall was perfect and fitting to the series; bittersweet and very emotive.

Anyways, I personally really enjoyed the series from start to finish. Some people say it is overrated, and hey maybe it is, but I honestly could care less about that and its ranking in this site (gotta admit though, it is always amusing too see people freak out whenever stuff like this happens with any series, not just this one. For real, people need to chill out). Even if the series had been ranked low, I still will have watched and enjoyed it the same way.

All in all (and subjectively), this was a great finale and great series overall. I’ll miss it for sure.

(PS. not sure what the OVA will be all about, but I’m looking forward to see it).

it is unwise to forced yourself to watch something that you know you would not like and still give it an underserved score

It is like I intentionally watch a film where I don't have any understanding in language, hence not knowing what is going on with the filme and then rate it 0/10

so irresponsible

by the way, some hater here feels that since the show is kind of overrated, they have to give it less score
Like if the anime doesn't get this high rating, they will rate it around 7/10
but because the anime get 9/10 and they don't like it, they will give it 1/10, saying that it is overated

there are differences between overrated and bad dude

I had issues with pacing and overly drawn out dialogue in the middle of the series. But if they somehow condensed the series a little and cut out some of the fat, I think it would've been better. I'd still give it at least an 8 or 9.

I really liked this show, but it had so many flaws. I'm giving it 9/10 because I always only care for overall enjoyment but if we come to go with its flaws it would be around 7/10. It really should go with happy ending or at least tell us something what happened after, but we only got more drama.

i got depressed ^^ , some episodes made me assume that someone's gonna die. I saw it coming' but the "feels", it doesn't care whether the plot is predictable or not. Once those scenes get in to you, it'll go beyond your logic and trigger something inside

it may be slow that made some moments boring, but there's artistry from the musical score, animation and dialogue. So many metaphors, a few of them felt "too much" and the last episode, as we all know, was really moving. An anime to recommend, but warn your friends about the emotional trap, its not just rom-com :D

Just finished the series. Loved the music, it really reminded me why did I love classical music so much when I was younger.
Also, I'm glad it ended the way it did. I really loved Kaori, but if it would've ended in any other way it wouldn't have had the same impact.
In general I'm not a big sucker for dramas. Didn't like Clannad and barely tolerated AnoHana... This one was emotionally different for me. Mainly because of the characters.

Holy shit Kaori was such a damn plot device I can't stand her. This entire show was just a conglomeration many storytelling methods done wrong. Too much inner dialogues and Kousei was like the only good character. The ubiquity of death flags, the forced drama...ugh. This was the only episode to be done well. Kudos for that but this is such a disappointment.

5.5/10, I'm nice so I'll round it to 6 for MAL.

Masterpiece! Here's what I would say, a prey to tears.
The story narratively redeemed himself great, proving just in this last episode, the TV series was valid at the end.
Too bad that was not at these levels, in the rest of the other episodes.
Atmosphere really addictive and melancholy, especially towards the end.
Drawings and animations excellent, so much beauty deserves a vote of 8.5 / 10!

Too late, Kaori......Too late. You should have said it from the very beginning. When you said that you knew that you don't have much time left, you shouldn't have lied and just went straight out and told Kousei how you feel. I mean, she did all of those crazy stuffs because she knew that she was going to die. It's funny because most people won't do that, living their life to the fullest cause they don't have sickness, disease or some shit, when they can die any moment. Well, I gotta say that the second half kinda got me pretty sad. The ending too with the nice song along with Kaori's pictures.
I was spoiled about the "double suicide" thing before I started this from a review here in MAL, and thought that "Hey, at least, they are together". I didn't believe that spoiler completely, though. This ending, I just think that killing Kaori is just unnecessary. Besides, why did the story even went this way?? Oh well. What happens...happens.
I watched 'Your Lie in April' in April ahahaha. I didn't plan it. I think it's awesome.
Well, I still felt something about this Anime. Thank you ^^ It's past 4:00 AM already. I guess I should sleep already.

This is probably one of the best series overall in recent memory, and almost indisputably the best of its genre in recent memory. Sure, it contains elements of over-dramatization, and the characters are likely a touch too sensitive and emotionally sophisticated for their age, but you have to give credit to this series for a lot of things.
1. Ended right as it should
2. Decent and fairly consistent art throughout, a significant improvement over the manga itself I might add
3. Superb soundtrack, and I'm not just talking about the pieces Kousei and others played
4. Deep dive into emotions that a great many other series tend to gloss over
5. Very likable cast, although I personally didn't like Tsubaki at all

The only thing I guess I had to pick about the ending is that Kaori chose to confess only as she was about to die. She's not dense at all and Kousei's feelings for her should've been fairly obvious to her. Why not lay it out then? But despite that I personally hate sad endings (I sort of wanted to see them extend Kaori's life temporarily), the ending was at least acceptable. And the series was just all around amazing.

I've never read the manga, so I don't know what the original is like, but honestly this ending was beautiful.

I'm sad about Kaori dying, but it seemed necessary. At this point in the series, it wouldn't make sense if she lived.

I'm really glad that Kousei didn't revert to the stage he'd been in after his mother died.

Finally, the letter ;-; Oh Kaori, never had I liked you more.

So I watched this after I'd been spoiled quite a bit (thank you internet >.>) but I still loved the series. Sure there were some flaws, but overall it was great. Well done!

I just finished it 5 hours ago, and I can't get the end out of my mind, I really think I will dream it tonight. I was prepared for this, as I realized after she was admited in the hospital that this will end bad, yet I was hoping for a miracle, just some illness that will cure... It was a really depressing ending, because first of all Kaori really wanted to live. In many tragic anime, when a character has a terminal ilness, he/she starts to accept their destiny, and when death emerges you have the feeling that they where prepared at least. But Kaori was different, she chose the operation because she wanted to live, she even started recuperation and worked hard towards it, and she wished to sing togeder with Arima once more... something that I wanted to see too. A duet in a competition with Kaori and a fully functional Arima, it was very painfull when I realised this wont be a rom-com revolved around music like I trough it will be. Another depressing thin was the fact that Kaori died without knowin that she was loved by Arima, and they had so many chances to talk about their feelings Q.Q And if you think about it, Kaori wanted to leave something as an artist too, as she was sad when she didn't do it in the violin competition. I dont know, her death feelt so real, so unexpected (even trough I expected this), and so... it will take me time to get over it, or at least to tink at something else, because I will allways remember this as I really love the soundtracks of this anime, especially the first OP which used to make me smile everytime... and now it feels so bitter-sweet. The anime was great, but I would had loved if it was just and average rom-com about music. I wanted to see things in this anime, that wont be possible now.

i wish they could atleast make a special episode to clarify all the questions and the gaps of the story it was so heart breaking i cant sleep at night.... damn....

It tried doing too much and didn't have a clear identity. Was it trying to be a romance or was it more about the music? ....Then it became a melodramatic love triangle romance of middle schoolers who acted like adults. It was weird and off putting.

Yep, melodrama. Show would have been infinitely better had childhood girlfriend just been a friend through the series with the ending maybe promising that things would change.

Too much angst. The "girl with the incurable disease who teachers tormented artist about life" is a cliche in Japan by itself, but then add "childhood girl friend realizing she is in love with tormented artist because he finally shows an interest in another girl" is another hackneyed cliche. Add to that the whole conflict with the mother angle and well, it is just too much. Any one would have been fine, but 3?

Not to say that this show didn't have some great stuff: loved the rivals and the competitions, liked the new teacher (and surrogate mom), there was stuff that should have been given the space to breathe, add to that very good animation, and some very nice music, and there were the pieces of a truly good animation, but the stench of the melodrama in the end suffocated everything.

Quoting this to say that both opinions has echoed with me and why the anime disappointed me a lot. The melodrama with the girl dying, the abusive mother and his childhood friend being in love with him just annoyed me. Doesn't help the fact that the soundtrack came across as a bit too samey to a point that I can definitely tell how the scene is going to play out by just hearing that soundtrack.

For example, the "Again" soundtrack is going to tell me that the character is having some huge realisation through monologue overload. "I can't forget this day" is going to be the character having a monologue about the challenge that awaits him in a piano show-off.

The soundtrack already spoils the type of scene it's going for before it even plays the damn thing.

And it's such a fucking shame because I like the soundtrack, but the association with certain scenes have ruined it for me.

It's a six out of ten at best. The melodrama and the overuse of the soundtrack in certain scenes ruined the pacing and tension for me. The best use of it was the actual chopin pieces themselves.

In spite of such a tragic ending, I liked this anime. This is the best I've seen in recent years, which has affected the strings of my soul. After some time, I again watched the ending, and crying again as in the 1st time. By this anime can not ignore and do not see. Though so sad over, she still helped Arima get out and thanks to Kaori he was able to play again.

Well, that was depressing. This show had very good production values. Though I would have loved for them to have focused more on the competitions. An easy 8/10 for me.

However, I really hate sad endings. We are better off with happy endings FFS. Would have avoided it like the plague if I had known it would end like this.

a depressing anime. should've know that from the start so i don't have to suffer over the loss of Arima Kousei's lover. kousei loved her deeply but can't be with her. that's just. effin depressing.

should've known this is a tragedy anime. poor kousei now have to marry his childhood friend instead haha.
i wanna root for TsubakiXkousei but truth is,it's always been KouseiXKaori because they're soulmates for god sake.

10/10, but i minus 4 because of the depression. 6/10 then.

Just a tad overhyped, no? 13th a few weeks after it ended? Ya gotta be kidding me. Filled with unnecessary melodrama since the very first episode. It wouldn't be a problem if they had the decency to allow us to first make a connection with the characters and then around episodes 9 or 10, bring on the drama in full force. But crying scenes in the first episode? Crying scenes in every episode? Tell me why should I care if you haven't given me time yet to get attached to these characters. The love triangle plot was unnecessary, it contributed nothing to Kousei's development nor to the overall plot as a whole, it was just there for some reason. I also found it ridiculous that after everything bad she's done, the anime tries to justify and make us feel sorry for what Kousei's mom did to her son, lol.

Positive points include the soundtrack that's nothing short of spectacular even excluding the classical tracks and the main character, that despite the hate he seems to get for some reason, he was easily the best character of the series. I liked the ending, as well. I'll give it a 6 or 6.5, seems fair enough.
