Hi anyone who reads this, can anyone tell me at what point Gintama becomes really good? I am at 33 episode and I have put it on hold because... I don't know why. :D I definitelly won't drop it it's just that it's a little, I might say boring, at the point I am. So can anyone help me?

It never at one episode becomes really good. It just eventually gets better and just continues to do so. Most people I talk to mention the 30s or 40s as when they saw it in a different light.

There are already threads about this in this board.

Its good the whole way through, although it does get better.

You just have to get used to the humor, then you will love and laugh your ass off at every episode even the most silly ones.

Unless you just dont like the humor or humor in general, then gintama is not for you, as gintama is like 85% humor.

the first 20 episodes are more or less pretty bad, it starts improving and experimenting with different things after the 20 ep mark but still has alot of duds but also way more hits and variety, its first year is by far its worst but there are some really worthwhile moments and episodes in it after its rough start. Its a series that continually tries new things and improves upon itself in every regard even to this day, Id say you are at a point where you can drop it even if it does get dramatically better from where your at but you seem willing to give it more of a chance then id say continue watching it till episode 50 or so before deciding if you think its worth your time or not.

Though i do think there is a moment where the series coincidentally gets really good, after the benizakura arc(ep 58-62 or the superior movie version) it coincidentally was way more consistent and entertaining than it was before it as well as benizakura being something the show hadnt done before. There isnt any earth shattering events that change the series as a whole its just that there really are not many duds after that point and it still manages to get better and better from even that point.

I wouldn't consider the start bad, it was actually quite hilarious. I remember that at the episode where the almost blind assassin chick crashed into Gin's place I rofled on the floor :D I mean I never laughed like this from any anime.

It's just that there were some mediocre episodes that followed and I am a person who likes to watch 3-5 animes at the same time, so I discovered Hunter x Hunter and Fate/Zero so I sorta got sucked into them and there wasn't any time to watch Gintama. I just wanted to clearly know that the show keeps getting better and I will definitely keep watching, so thank you :)

If you liked the start which is more or less unanimously disliked by the fans even to the point of the show getting a time slot change and the show itself making fun of the fact then youll definitely love the series as it goes on. It admittedly isnt consistent though, there will still be duds but they become fewer and more far in between as well as just being drowned out by the amount the show does right. Personally i think the show starts being at its best once it starts delving into arcs which doesnt seem to really happen until about 40 episodes in with the umibozu arc, it also tones down the references dramatically which i considered a plus too since now they usually have more effect on actual comedy than just mentioning them for the sake of it.

I think your wrong jizy hitler. The episodes you are most likely calling "duds" are episodes that are complete insanity and silliness, and you probably like the serious arcs?

But thats not gintama. Gintama is all about its comedy with serious arcs peppered in here and there. Dont get me wrong I think serious gintama is one of best shounen out there, but gintama wouldnt be gintama without its crude humor and 10 minute long background shots with talking ;)

no im referring to the episodes that arent funny that occassionally show their ugly head to fuck up a streak of great episode such as the episode with otsuu's manager, hard boiled detective episodes, any of the first 20 episodes and any other duds that persist throughout the series, , i havent even mentioned serious arcs which are few and far in between nor even show up until 60 episodes in.

It's true. It's good from the start. But it doesn't seem this way in the beginning. I think it's different for everybody, so I can just speak about my experience. At some point I understood that if I watch another Gintama episode it's almost guaranteed to be a good episode.

Also there is a lot of interesting subjects like different point of view of the characters, like there are several ways (at least four) to react to the new political situation and they all make sense. I see Gintama as an anime to which it's difficult to find something similar. For example, you can say that KHR is a bit like Naruto, YYH is a bit like Bleach, Detective Conan is a bit like Kindaichi. But for Gintama I don't know yet similar anime...

Well I cant' agree that, and it's kinda surprising that you interpreted ''never'' in a positive way, instead of the intended negative way from me. I think it's pretty terrible at the beginning, almost dropped the show several times, it just wasn't funny or interesting, and it also confuses the new viewers, on whether or not there is an actual serious plot, or at least me. The Sa-chan episode, is the first episode that I actually liked, and it more or less got less terrible than the beginning. The first serious arc, was really awful imo, except for those little parts about Kagura's backstory, and her father.

I said never, because I don't think the show ever gets consistently really good. Yes there are really good episodes, but they are scattered around after the 50 episode mark.

Well that's because Gintama is a gag/comedy shounen manga, that sometimes takes itself seriously with battle arcs (Which are quite generic, and uninspired imo)

Overall I couldn't bring myself to give it more than 7. I think SKET Dance is similar to Gintama, but miles better than it, in a lot of aspects, most important thing being that it's a lot more consistent in quality.
