Despite the insanely rushed wtf denouement of Strawberry Shake Sweet (though, it did have a ridiculously humorous conclusion), I'm really sad that I have to say goodbye to two of my favourite idiots in manga... but the mangaka did say she was tired, and wanted to take a break.

What did you think?

---

For those of you who do not know, Strawberry Shake Sweet is by far one of the funniest manga ever made and is probably the funniest yuri manga ever published.

It follows an idol in the making named Julia who falls hopelessly in love with the world's biggest doofus, another girl named Ran. Hilarious things ensue.

I strongly suggest you all to go out there and read it! Give attention to this series, because honestly, it deserves it!

Actually, two volumes only. I don't know if it will be continued or not, but for now, it's over. The ending seemed pretty decided as well.

And yes, HayateXBlade is never-ending, though it makes you wonder how those manga that have only a few volumes get made into anime and yet ones with actual length that are very good never do.

oh.....
im probably the only one who isn't sad that it ended...
in fact, i'm content because ran and julia are together and that photographer and the model (forgot their names) are together as well

i am a little disappointed though..
we didn't get to see some Kaoru and Saeke action
except for that new year's special
bondage... lawl

but yeah.. i guess it was very unexpected for them to end the manga like that
Nice guys finish last
That's why I'll treat you like trash.
It's not what I really want to do.

I'll give it my best try to

It was an out-of-the-blue kind of ending and it felt rushed but it did pair them up in the end. So it's all good ^^.
But I did wish to see more Rena and Sera somewhere instead of that small note in the epilogue ><.

But yeah, I'm also reading Hayate X Blade and loving it. It really is strange that an anime has not been made of it yet (I would Love to see it), considering Aoi Hana and Sasameki Koto only have a few volumes out and they are the ones being made into anime. Hmm....but of course there are a lot of manga I would like to see in anime form that probably never happen.

Well women to women relationship really doesn't sit well with the traditionally male-dominant Japanese society. If you take a look at all the anime with shoujo ai theme, most of them are based off of relatively short work, and virtually none of them was given sufficient budget (not even comparing to high-profile anime).

Well I can see that but I don't agree with that completely. It is true that the society is not all that friendly towards those relationships, but that also includes all homosexual relationships. But, I believe, that really goes for what is seen in public and real life. They are much more explorative with anime and manga than they would ever be in real life. Plus there is the matter of how popular yaoi is and how much more prevalent it is than yuri. I would think men would be much more squeamish with that then with yuri. But hey, I don't know for sure.

As for the anime, I'm not sure. It's true that those series aren't very long, but isn't it more in fashion now to have one or two season anime coming out? The only ones I can think of that are really long are the ones that are geared toward children or teens (Dragon Ball Z, Inu Yasha, Naruto, Bleach). I just think it kind of varies.

For the budget thing....I have no clue, lol. It usually isn't an issue with me unless it's badly done. ^_^

Regarding anime adaptations, I have hardly seen anything over 2 volumes being adapted for yuri. Most other anime, while staying confined to the two season limit, seems to be based on multi-volume manga or some length visual novel.
I still think that Japanese tend to stay off the subject of homosexuality when it comes to ANY medium but that's just me.

I'm still struggling to finish the manga, which I find so boring and uninteresting, so I would care if it never gets adapted.

Also aren't we getting 3 yuri anime adaptations this Summer, so I don't think the Japanese are afraid of homosexuality... especially when it comes to yaoi. ^_^

Actually, they're just as receptive of it as most anybody else in a developed nation. Real homosexual stuff doesn't really get accepted.

Yaoi and yuri caters to fans of the genres. It's all mostly about high school romances as well, or it's a side dish to the main story.

I made an analogy?? o_O I guess I did and didn't even notice...

But I do read a lot of yaoi and yuri, and as it stands, it seems that once it is all "sugar coated", it's delectable to whichever fans want it.

Yuri especially is made primarily by guys for other guys, while yaoi is predominantly made by women for women. It sort of adds to

Just to stay on topic:

SSS has yuri, and the entire cast is arguably lesbian, but how many of them identify themselves as "lesbian". They don't. YOU know they are, everyone knows they are, but they don't outwardly say it despite the huge amount of gayness in your face, basically.

It's the same thing with Maria Holic, for example. It was "yuri" but was any of those girls really, really gay? Kanako, what with her booby fantasies still didn't even register a blip on my gaydar. I know straight girls who are more lesbian than she is :\

I read a one shot once, a realistic one, in which the two girls try to address their feelings for one another, and they were panicked about their homosexuality as being a "phase". Which is what I believe most Japanese see yuri as. I don't think they really address the issue head on.

Girls having crushes on other girls? Fine. Them shacking up and living together? Not fine.

Traditionally, Shoujo Ai is considered a phase developed by girls sometimes late in their high school years. It is generally assumed that this is more of a craving for an elder sister that one will eventually grow out of, presumably before graduating. Maria-sama ga Miteru is considered by many as a "pure" Shoujo Ai anime, yet even the series cannot escape reflecting this societal view in general.

All of the above is paraphrased from one of my imaginary acquaintances, though it is also likely one of my teachers in the Japanese classes I took in college. Don't ask me how we arrived at the topic....

That's the thing, I don't believe in the concept of "shoujo ai". That's a Western term for yuri about girls who just innocently care for other girls without it being romantic or sexual. It's all yuri in the end.

I especially find it hard to talk to people when they say they like shoujo ai and they don't like yuri, since it means their concept of yuri is what has been promotes as basically girl on girl porn. Which it isn't.

er I used the term "shoujo-ai" because that's the pronounciation of the kanji. It means roughly "girl love"

I know what it means :P But its context in the West means that it is a more non-sexual, non-romantic sort of love.

You mean within the context of a community of non-mainstream genre of a niche group of television watchers.

I wouldn't pay too much mind :D

In all fairness, the concept isn't simply derived by Western fans. Traditionally, lesbianism has been thought of as a passing phase within the male-dominant Japanese society.

To kinda get back on topic... I am EXTREMELY disappointed that SSS is over. The ending was kinda lame and rushed which is too bad because the author didnt give it the love and respect that it deserved IMO. That being said it was very funny and cute and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Its going to be in my top 5 manga for a very long time I suspect.

True, it did seem like she wanted to move on or perhaps they were pressuring her to end it and she was just like, "Screw it, whatever."

I wouldn't mind if she picked it up again! TwT I miss Julia's antics.

Just finished it yesterday. It's such an amazing manga so it's sad to see that it's so short. I'm content with it though because the ending it had was good, in my opinion.

I'm just happy to have come across and read a yuri manga that was actually a fairly good length and had a great storyline to it.

The ending didn't occur to me at that time since their relationship were going smooth and I'm kinda expecting something more from where they're going to take it into. Like what Saeki fear the most. Haha! It was a fun ride and wtf ending it like all of a sudden.

Let me overflow this thread with a new, big wave of pure depression.

I wouldn't even mind to read a complete volume that only consists of Ran and Julia sitting on the bed and encourage each other to take the first step.

SSS is so god-damn funny. If you think it's not, then... then... something is just simply wrong with you! xD

I'm re-reading it now. It has very quickly swapped places with Hayate X Blade to be back on my favourites list. Really, what was I thinking?!

"What in the world are you, appearing out of nowhere and frankly, accurately guessing peoples personal information?!" D:

Ah, Zlay. I should have been a rockstar; but I can't sing (yay, points if you get the reference).

The end was very much "...whut?" but on the bright side at least it wasn't generic.
