The reason people focus on their personal life is because, unless they have a phD in a related field there isn't really a whole lot they can realistically achieve beyond using less power and driving a hybrid car and the like. I know a guy who runs his house entirely of hydro power, so I personally am not screwed as I can kick back at his house. |

While Democracy has given people more and more freedom, saddly they often are morons that vote for who has the nicest teeth, then that guy has no clue what he's doing, and hires his even more clueless brother to work with him. American "corn" = maize; in general the word "corn" means "the principal grain of a country or region." In grains alone in the year 2000, there was enough food to feed the world population twice over. That's not counting meat, dairy, legumes, fruits, or other vegetables. So the fact that 10% of the world's population (then) was going hungry was clearly not a problem with the food supply, but with management of that food supply: or mismanagement. Government subsidies that make certain food crops economically viable. Yes, this is your government paying farmers to plant stuff that otherwise would not be financially viable (soybeans) and then instead of planting other (less lucrative) crops there ensues a huge surplus of said subsidized crops, which, due to glutted markets, often just rot away in storehouses, unable to be sold. Mismanagement. Bleaching grains for use in highly processed foods, reducing its nutritional value because such foods and sweets are more desirable than nutritious ones. Mismanagement. GMO foods that corrupt natural food stocks. Not an issue now since they are commercially successful and still relatively edible. What if pests become resistant to pesticides used on such crops? What if mutated or corrupted strains overtake usable ones? Depleted soil due to overfarming of agricultural lands, resulting in topsoil erosion and less arable landspace. Mismanagement. It's all about mismanagement. And you could argue that mismanagement is the result of human greed. We're not going to completely obliterate ourselves, but we may make a world that cannot sustain as many human beings as before |
| I seem to recall someone in the 1800's coming up with a similar theory about humans reaching a tipping point and the population dropping off sharply by the end of that century. It didn't happen though because exponential technological growth was not factored in to our population growth. Technological advancement has not only continued to grow exponentially in the last 10 years, it has actually started to grow even faster and has outpaced the predictions of scientists near the turn of the century. There is also the fact that there is a correlation between developed nations and lower birth rates as the countries with the highest birth rates are the ones that are usually the poorest. Makes since if you factor in the fact that even if you have a great year and your economy grows by 7% it means nothing if your population grows by 9% in that year as you are still 2% in the hole overall and are still worse off. Eventually, barring any major nuclear wars or other disasters developing countries will start to have a drop off in population growth but if anything technological growth is looking to continue to keep growing exponentially, especially with quantum computing becoming more and more feasible in the coming years. This will lead in my opinion to a tipping point where the population is no longer keeping pace with technological growth and we will be getting better and better over time. The only real question is whether we can keep our current global society together long enough to reach this tipping point. |
