I would say brook...He had to bury about half of his first nakama, he lost most of his body and his shadow, and he wondered on the sees all alone for over a decade.

But hmmmm.... I'm voting Robin, she never had any friends before strawhats and her whole island was massacred and all...

Robin's arc was more epic, and we know more there. So Robin! Everyone has had some sort of "Tragic Past", which was sad, at least, though. ;p

Robin.

She lost her mom, her homeland, became wanted at such a young age, had to survive in the Grand Line all by herself at such a young age, and I can really go on and on.

Well, for dramatic impact I would say Robin, because of the way it was told to us, and for her being so young when everything happened.
However, I vote for Brook, simply because I would rather go through everything on Robin's past than Brook's (spending 40+ years alone, not being able to see the sun, burying all your friends, etc).

I have to say that Robin's past is the saddest. 20 years of trying to find out who you really are and your family and friends died because of something so trivial is so tragic.
2nd, Chopper's past is sad too. Being part deer and part human can be something hard to live as. Poor chopper, he wasn't accept by both his kin until he met a doctor. C:

Luffy: always had a goal, never got depressed. He might have gone through a hard time but never took it the wrong way. Instead thought he was learning from that.

Zoro: possible but he was living out his life how he wanted to. He did lose his childhood friend but he lived to do what he promiced so wasn't that bad for him.

Nami: Could be hard but she faught for her people.

Usopp: pathetic past.

Sanji: found a place for him even though he went through a hard time.

Chopper: he atleast had someone who took him in. His first firend did die but he found someone else.

Robin: The worst past. Never found anyone till the strawhats. Was always betraying and being betrayed..

Franky: found friends who accepted him.

Brooke: possible. he had to live by himself for such a long time but didn't seem like he was totally sad.

I totally agree with all your statements, chopper's own familly abandoned him!! that's very sad too, the same with robin (20 years of traveling alone on strangers ships)
& about brooke, i think he was more sad about not being able to keep his promise to the whale.

Brooke is the only one I can't think of how he feels. He was left along for a long time and did have that promice but didn't seem like he gave up on life, like robin.

He almost seemed like he was always laughing it off so its hard to think of how he really felt, plus its been awhile since I saw/read his arc..

I voted for Nami. Partially because everyone else seems to be voting for Robin... and partially because, dang, she was orphaned twice. And the second time, her "mother" was killed right in front of her, and then she had to work for the guy that did it. I dunno, if someone killed my parents, I... probably wouldn't want to help them further their career as a rutheless tyrant.

Robin's brought me closest to tears.

I had to debate between her and Nami for a while, but then I remembered that Robin never had any family to love her. She had the researchers, but they seemed to shut her out a lot to protect her.

I think Luffy has the saddest story because I just figured out what happened to his mom. She died when Luffy was very young and Luffy was alone after Ace left the island and before Luffy left. Imagine being alone for most of your life. I can cause I was.
If I'm crying at your funeral, then I'm laughing too hard. If you're crying at my funeral, then you're dead.

everyone that robin had only wanted to use her and not actually be with her. She also had to use the people she was around. Chopper on the other hand had that doctor take him in, although everything is how you see it so you can't really convince someone is "worse" off.

I love her 'Are you my mommy?' line.. ^^

also... the day that she finally met her mother is also the day that she saw her die, what a happy way to celebrate your birthday... T_T (I kinda forgot if that day is her birthday or it happened days after... Hehe)

And as the other guys who voted her said, she got no one to trust because of the bounty on her head.. well, before the Straw Hats atleast.

Robin. she has nobody. everyone she came close to died and she was constantly being betrayed as a kid. When they do the hometown reflections no one misses her. I don't see how anyone else comes close. Even brook has Laboon and Chopper has Dr. Kurea. I think Nami would come in second though. She had a tough life having to serve the guy who killed her mother. She never even had any real parents and she doesn't even have a last name.

it def a tie between robin and Brook
but im giving it to brook
roben only had to deal for 20 years
brook, after watching his whole crew die had to spend the next 40 or 50 years by himself, and for those who say he seemed happy, we know that that was his way of trying to deal with it. he was devastated on the inside

Well i think both Nami and Robin had sad childhoods.
Nami's [foster] mother was killed right in front of her eyes..How terrorizing can that be..

But my vote still went to Robin..She had to see her hometown [with her family, mom, loved ones] die in the terrible flames at a very young age..After which she had to put up with living alone and not being able to trust anyone. She's an amazingly strong character.

so damn quote.

Nami has the saddest past...
She sacrificated herself for her village.. She is strong for livin' and workin' with the same person that killed her 'adoptive' mother.. all this for her town.. So, nami.

Gettin' hits and run away it's 'easy', but its less easy 'living with the problems and trying to fight them'.. so~ Robin had a sad past too, but Nami most. She fighted.. >_< for this reason i like nami so much. she's great!

What the f*ck are you talking about? o_O Facing her problems? Robin was a little girl, for God's sake!
Ok, so was Nami, but wait... what exactly happened to her? Hmm.. let me think:
Her mother was killed because she didn't have enough money to pay Arlong for not killing her.... Right before Nami's eyes...
Sad, indeed. But what then?
She had entire village somehow looking out for her and her sister. She "chose" to work for Arlong hoping that she can buy off her village... Yeah, she was strong - she lost one person after all.

And then what happened to Robin? I can't really recall... or wait! I can:
World Government decided that people, who can read Poneglyphs are to be killed... So they send Marines' battleships to annihilate her island... Robin's mother was killed right before her eyes too. The difference? Her mother wasn't the only one who died then - the library, the only place she thought "home" of was burned, all her friends had to stay on the island, waiting for their deaths...
What about the rest of islanders? They were allowed to evacuate. But guess what? No a single one of them was Robin's friend whatsoever - all the kids called her a monster.
And the only person who wanted to help her escape, her new friend, Saul, was killed by Aokiji, who let her go after that, because if he didn't he would hurt his pride...

So let me summarize:
Nami:
1. Mother's death.
2. Working for her mother's killer, so she is able to buy her village off of him, while villagers pretended to hate her (because she was working for him).

And then Robin:
1. Mother's death, as well as all the people's she ever loved and respected.
2. Her island disappearing from the surface of the planet.
3. being forced to leave, having no place to go, no money, no prospects, etc.

Yeah, I suppose you're right - Nami's story is so much worse than Robin's. And yes, Robin certainly could have had stay and fight an Marine Admiral with a fleet in tow. (no sarcasm at all...)

~~
Personally, I don't give a damn about who's past was the saddest in your opinion. But if you say that Robin didn't fight, then it's totally different case.

Well maybe i express myself wrong.. sorry if i did.. i get what u mean and u are right, robin had a really sad past too.. the stupid kids that called her monster, the few ppl that really she loved all get killed and the whole island deleted from the world's face..
[personally i criyed (like a lot of one piece's fan i believe~) when at enies lobby she said something like 'if i really can, then i want to live'..]
Anyway i was meaning the sacrifice part..ok u say that was a nami's choice..but well it's also true that the other alternatives [like doing nothing] she had weren't so good at all..
and in the sacrifice part of her story she had to go into a pirate's ship to another one, just to stealing from them.. and this, as a little kid and then young woman, was kinda dangerous..
and yeah, always speaking about sacrifice, all her village was there to hate her (at least in front of her eyes) and despise her..

instead with the fight part, yea..its also true that the little robin as a kid of course cannot face a big enemy like world government, but with a kid's eyes (i mean, when u are a kid u have no strenght so) even a 'stupid fish' like arlong could appear a 'big enemy..

anyway as i said in my previous post, yeah i think robin's past is really sad but i think nami's is most sad.. b'cuz of the sacrifice and fight part.. ><

anyway, happy easter (in late)~

Well, if I recall correctly Nami didn't "fight" Arlong - she was really scared of him. She chose to work for him so she could pay him to leave her village... Yes, we can call it "facing" Arlong. And I do give her a credit for that, but the difference is that she had a opportunity to fight him (her way, of course). Robin didn't - it's not like if she got enough money then her island would appear again. (and even if it would, there wouldn't be anyone there who cares for Robin)

So my point is:
Nami did "fight" Arlong, that's true, but she had a chance to. Robin didn't have one and she had no one she could sacrifice herself for.

Anyways, I get your point (I don't agree, but I get it) and I hope you get mine. Let's end it this way, either way we could argue and argue, for all the eternity ;p (well, probably not that long, but it sounds better this way xd)
//Happy easter to you too :P

The only ones that can compete about having the sadest pasts is Robin an Brooke.

Luffys past we don't really know much about, other than that he gets traumatized thinking about it and that his grandpa was though on him. Still he probabilly can't compete with Robin and brookes past.
