I find it interesting that Hawkeye Mihawk is always seen alone. He is never seen with an underling until Zorro begs for training. Here's some of the things we know about him:

Around the beginning of the Great Age of the Pirates, Hawkeye and Shanks had daily duels. Considering that both of them survived, it could be said that they were evenly matched. Somehow Mikawk got the title of "Greatest Swordsman," while shanks got the title of one of the Four Emperors. Could the difference be not by strength, but rather Shank's strong crew and Mikawk's independence? Maybe they still are evenly matched to this day, and Mihawk, who is devoted only to his sword is given his title.

There was one other Warlord of the Sea who was mostly alone. Moria told Luffy that he had a strong crew but they all died in the New World. This was one of the reasons he decided to make zombies. Crocodile might not have all of his original crew, but it seems like him and Daz bones go far back. Kuma, of course, was part of the Revolutionary army originally. He is the only other one who was not known to ever be a captain of his own crew. (He might have been division captain, at some point, but Dragon was still above him in the chain of command).

So basically, the only one without much of a backstory is Hawkeye. Every other Warlord has a crew or had a crew in the past. So, what do you think? Was Hawkeye ever in a pirate crew? If he wasn't, did he become a pirate on his own? Personally, I have no clue. However, I do feel like it was foreshadowed that Hawkeye and Shanks have a past. Also, there had to be at least one person who taught him something about sword-fighting.

An interesting question with little to speculate on. I think it'd be more interesting to keep the lone-wolf aspect, as it's somewhat more novel for him to have always floated around on that tiny raftship of his.

To be honest I have no idea, that's why I'd like to see the past, you know, it would be totally awesome if Oda writes a story about the past and it gets adapted into a movie, holy f that would be awesome, no matter who it is, Roger, Garp, WB, Shiki, Mihawk, Sengoku, or anyone else that we probably wouldn't get to know their past in the canon series.

For all I know Mihawk is a loner now.

Yeah that would be nice - and much better than some of the weird movies they made so far.

He really has no need for a crew since he's a Schi so he doesn't have to worry about the Marines going after him and it doesn't seem like he even wants to get One Piece.

I'm also guessing the last Schi is a lone wolf.

I feel like Hawkeye does deserve a back story. He is quite literally quite shrouded in mysteries.

I feel like he should have at least once been captain of if not part of an actual pirate crew before becoming a Shichikubai. After all, he had to have been a pirate to join the Shichikubai (that's literally what a Shichikubai is - a pirate that allied itself with the Marines and WG) and usually pirates have crews. But somehow, all that is lost and he does feel a lot more like a loner now than a captain.

He probably is like Trafalgar Law - his crew is gone or who-knows-what happened to them and he operates alone.

Nah, we know where Law's crew is, and he knows it too and has stayed in touch with them all this time. For his plans sake they were kept separated from him, or atleast that's how I interpret it.

My answer is: he was definitely a captain. Even if he didn't have a crew, he was/and still is, captain of his coffin-like ship!
This world is mine. I think this world may even just be a long, long dream I'm watching. You guys may just be illusions, and it can't be proven whether or not you really exist either. In other words, this world was created with me at the center. So what will happen if I die? I don't know. My imagination isn't very creative; I just can't imagine myself dying. In other words, there is no way this world can completely disappear. But if I die, then everyone will disappear. I am the only one in this world who won't disappear. The rest are just people I see as if in a dream.

Imagine what that implies though. If Hawkeye ever got sick, he'd have to treat himself. He would have to navigate and take care dealing with harsh weather on his own. He would have to know enough to fix his little coffin raft so it could last through the Grand Line, or at least know how to make a new one. Even something so simple as keeping watch at night usually requires another person. Yes, Hawkeye might be superhuman enough now to be able to do all those things for himself. But I'm not so sure he could have always done that for himself. Few people start out that superhuman, even in One Piece.
