My computer for some reason doesn't play 1080p or 720p well, and lags with them a lot. Is there a video converter out there that converts .mkv files to lower formats well? (Trying to avoid downloading virus-ridden fake programs) Or if you know a way to make 1080/720p vids not lag, I'd be happy to know.

Can you post your PC specs and the codecs that you are currently using now to play the vids?

If your PC can hardly play 720p videos, then it's probably so weak that it'll take ages to transcode them to 480. Why don't you just download lower quality videos?

All modern video cards can hardware-decode 8bit H264 (as long as you stay within the specs). MPC-HC works well with hardware decoding (may require you to enable it manually though).

If your PC is really bad, you'd probably also want to hard-code the subtitles (anything beyond basic text can be very demanding, karaoke etc.).

Tools I would use (not exactly novice friendly):
Avisynth (for filtering, resizing, hard-subbing, etc)
xy-VSfilter or xySubFilter (not just for soft-sub playback, but for the avisynth plugin as well)
x264 (for encoding)
MkvToolNix (for muxing)
MPC-HC (for playback)

If you want something easy... maybe try Handbreak or something.

Hard-coding subtitles or finding already hard-coded subtitled downloads is probably the way to go.

Hard-coding subtitles is more or less slapping the subtitles on the actual video, rather than loading the subtitles on-the-fly from either the video file or a sidecar file. Lessens strain on your computer with hard-coded.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C850D laptop running Windows 8 64-bit OS.
It has 4 GB RAM and an AMD E1-1200 APU, Radeon HD, 1.4 GHZ processor.

I use MPC-HC, yet it still get out of sync with the audio sometimes, what are the optimal setting for it?

It should be able to play 720p and even full HD without any problems. Uninstall your current codecs and use the link provided instead.

Do this. I would use the lowest presets (according to the image) for madVR.

Try to use Splayer, it's the most light program to watch videos, that I'm aware of, even when my hard drive was broke to the point where I couldn't even use my browser without it frozen every time, I could still watch HD videos (720p) with this program without lags.

Download VLC, it is free and play just every video files.

If that doesn't works for you, use a program called AppGeeker video converter software to re-configure the video from 1080/720p to 480p in its setting window manually.

yah i agree with this, put em on a flashdrive and plug it into something that can play it through your TV(like a ps3, xbox or really the TV itself if it has a usb port) and you wont even need to have your computer do anything,

listen to this, try downloading mini-size re-encoded/transcoded videos instead like google minitheatre and animestash

Out of all that I have used Faasoft 1080p Converter is the best I have used. It can easily convert 1080p/720p video to 480p to get a smaller size. Here is a guide: www.faasoft.com/articles/1080p-converter-convert-1080p-1080i-720p-video.html

1. Convert any 1080p/1080i/720p/720i video in MP4, AVI, MOV, AVCHD, MTS, MOD, TOD, MKV, WTV, TS, OGV, 3GP, WebM, MXF, WMV, ASF, ASX, AVI, XMV, DV, HDV, DV-AVI, DivX, Xvid, FLV, F4V, TP, Apple ProRes, R3D, Fraps video, BIK, etc;
2. Convert HD 720p, 1080p and 1080i video or convert 720p, 1080p, 1080i video to HD video format as your desire;
3. Convert camcorder video in 1080i or 1080p to more popular formats for playback and editing

I use a program called Freemake Video Converter, its runs with pretty much every file type and lets you convert to in all quality's.

http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

Just remember when installing to read carefully and decline any additional software it asks if you would like.
