Why do people hate anime in Canada (precisely Montreal,Quebec)?

It's not always easy to understand why people call you fag at school just because you like/draw/talk/watch animes. Is it because of the drawings, voices, story or maybe it is their ignorance that causes all this hating. I'm from Montreal and want to know what you think.

Thank you

Because people from French Canada are the most bitter about being rolled by the English. Hell if you don't know French there they get aggressive, so to answer your question.. they are just a bunch of twats.

Yea, goddamm french. Although I went to school near toronto and people were also sort of mean to the people into anime. ( I didn't watch anime back then. But I also didn't care if others did)

But also. Goddamm French.

As much as I "hate" to say it, in general it's true. And I'm French Canadian.

I live in Canada but not in Quebec, I know a couple of people who like animes. I think you just happen to have badluck because there's even TWO cinemas here that offers the latest Madoka Magica on our city and I often see animes being shown on theatres.

I would assume you go to a school in the public sector... Quebecois teens can be ignorant sometimes, to say the least. I grew up and went to school in Montreal as well, and I've encountered people that would try and make fun of me, but I was so indifferent to their shenanigans that they eventually stopped.

But frankly speaking you shouldn't worry too much about it because once you get in university nobody cares anymore

Thanks for the advice but I must tell you that I'm in a well known private high school where people are supposed to end up being the elite of society (which I don't believe at all). This is what lead me to ask this question. But in the end I also think it is because of, as you say, Quebecois teens ignorance.

Thats surprising, which school are you attending as of now if I may ask?

Also this would depend on what kind of show you watch. I'm pretty confident to say that if you watch Death Note, and other popular shows that airs on American TV such as DBZ, nobody would really judge you. Otherwise they are just ignorant.

It is widely known among students not attending Brebeuf that most students there tend to have a rather high ego... At least, thats what I think based on personal observation of friends that graduated from there.

You can just try to avoid making people know you are watching those clicheed shows. i.e: k-on/haruhi. Watch them at home and keep it to yourself. Instead you can make them know that you watch death note, code geass and other mainstream popular shows and they shouldn't judge you

I think the "all boys" explains it better than it being a French Canadian problem. I have noticed that gender specific schools tend to be more fierce on attacking anyone they think of as different than co-ed schools. Must be all that pent up sexual frustration :-)

My guess is that they also are quick to brand people as "fags", correct? Anyone who doesn't conform to their standards at what a "man" (in actually boys, though this isn't meant to attack young people, I have noticed a lot of so called "men" who seem to be chronologically challenged, and a lot of young people have a maturity that would put their elders to shame).

Maybe if there would be at least one TV channel that brought anime dubbed or subbed in Quebec, there would be more people that would show an interest in anime.

I mean, the only channel that brought anime here is ''Teletoon'' and it was only Naruto (first season) like 6 or 7 years ago and before that it was pokemon/digimon almost 10-12 years ago. Nothing else!

With those only two exemple, how do you want people to like and not only see anime as childish? More than half of the people that may be laughing at you don't even know what an anime is anyway.

There used to be an anime program on YTV (forgot its name), but it was brought down in 2008 IIRC. It used to air Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam Seed, Death Note, and other stuff.

edit: actually it ended on 2009

I used to watch a channel named YTV back when I was like 5-8 years old and I remember watching things like Hamtaro, Sailor moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, DBZ and some others, but it's been a while and this channel was english only.

If there would be an equivalent of this channel now but in french, that would probably boost the popularity of anime in Quebec. Or even just bring back a channel like this, even in english, would be a huge help.

I'm from Canada and I love anime and know a few people that do too, but most of the people I know or are friends with either don't watch anime or hate it because of ignorance. From what I've seen they use anime like Naruto and even hentai as a generalization for what anime is, so due to this act of stupidity they ultimately hate anime. I'm sure this is no different in other parts of the world.

the only reason she got elected was because the stupid french cegip and university students voted for her because of her promises but if they actually took a minute a thought about her promises from an economical point of view they would have realized that she was talking out her ass. i mean she promised to lower so many different taxes and to increase spending in like a billion different social programs it made no sense and that is why so many people voted against her. actually the majority of the voters voted against her but because of where the lines are drawn for the seats she won.

I never really watched a dubbed show so I won't start another dub vs sub discussion, but even if they are bad, I am pretty sure that it would improve the situation. Also it's not said that all show would need to be dubbed to be airing. Correct me if I'm mistaken here, but in France, there are some channels that show subbed anime. At least someone told me that, don't know if it's true.

Yeah, let kids be kids, they most likely don't know how to think for themselves until they've realized that it can only do them wrong.

I'm still a kid though, but I'm approaching adulthood so I think it's best for one to stay in touch with what one truly likes.

The amount of anime in which features Maple Syrup is quite low
Is this a possible a reason?
Or am I stereotyping?

But yeah, as everyone said on the first page, it appears to be a high school problem, as kids see those who watch anime as inferior to those who are cheer captains and football stars

Lol, you must love spreading faulty stereotypes about things you don't have a clue about. First it's about what anime are "hipster and pretentious", then you're insulting a culture that you have no clue about? Get a life

On topic I guess you just had a bad experience with the people around you, I mean we have otakuthon every year with over 9000 people and it was advertised as being one of the best conventions in north america, plus it was even on local media so most people know about it. Also anyone with "geek" tendencies know about anime and watch it
