Was a big fan of the original and was wondering if the 2011 version was worth checking out. When HxH(2011) started airing I avoided watching it do to hearing that it was less dark than the original and more childish. Now I see this anime is well past the original in both episodes and ranking so should I give it a go? Will I be disappointed due to nostalgia of the original? Thanks for the replies.

You have to decide that for yourself. The opinions are split.
The new version has its own style and has its pro and cons but is worth watching for sure.

I'd try the first few episodes and then you should be able to say if you can get along with the new style.

Well, if you can go past the first few of episodes I'd say that the 2011 ver is better.
This version has a child appearence only at the beginning but trust me it gets much more violent than the old one. Also in the old series Greed Island had an awful quality and the 2011 ver has the Chimera Ant Arc. So I recommend you to watch the new ver but to not judge it by the first episodes.

Well checking the wiki the 1999 has much better detail

And old animations are usually more fluid and all that but who cares watch it anyway

Exactly! The 2011 version in comparison took lots of animation-shortcuts, especially in the beginning. (I do not mean the faster pacing)

That aside, imo:
As an anime on its own - 1999 > 2011 (by a very SMALL margin. OVAs not included)
As an adaptation of the manga - 1999 < 2011 (again, sans the OVAs)

Yeees,childish....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhswnVAlKpE, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1onlLXUe5s etc. Only the first episodes were censored, after episode 37 or so it get much more violent than the first series. In fact, it is rated 17+, while the first series is PG-13. Just watch it, it's great.

It's the opposite. In the beginning it was so but eventually it got to heads being chopped off, children being eaten, and intestines being eaten. The most dark part of the story wasn't adapted in the 99 version.

And you might feel the nostalgia pulling you back. They changed the music which a lot of people liked and the voices were changed. I didn't remember the music but I thought the voice changes was a good move.

They're both classics, imo. You'll like the 2011 version, unless you're some eleven year old emo dweeb, incapable of appreciating things that aren't needlessly dark, violent, and gory.

I never saw the 1999 version, but I did view clips of it comparing the 1999 and 2011 versions. I can't say much about content, but I find the 2011 animation, sound, and character design quality to be far superior. The pacing is also fast, making it very enjoyable.

The 1999 anime was censored just as much as 2011 has been. The darker color tone allowed it to hide stuff such as blood, and even the blood ended out being black for the most part.

2011 is better. 2011 is less censored (at least from a point on) it's paced better (except for the first few episodes that were rushed), the art/animation is better and most importantly the story goes further.
The only advantage 1999 version has is it's music and the Hunter Exam arc which was more exciting and overall done better..

I would rate the newer series slightly higher than the older one, only because it went farther in terms of adapted content. Other than that, I'd say they're equal. Comparing the newer series up to the stopping point of the older one, they both had the same issues...

1. Censorship: Both of them were heavily censored. Newer series used clever camera angles to show violence, while the older one showed violence to a lesser extent. This changed once the newer series got to the latest arc, but like I said, I'm only comparing the two series up to the older one's stopping point.

2. Pacing: In terms of pacing, neither one was perfect. The older series went slower so it wouldn't catch up to the manga, whereas the newer one went faster so it could get past the stopping point of the older series (although the newer one has started to slow down since it's running into the same problem).

3. Accuracy: Contrary to popular belief, while the newer series did a better job of replicating minute details from the manga, I wouldn't consider it to be any more accurate than the older series. Both adaptations are fairly accurate, but they've both made unnecessary changes to the canon at times, in addition to the inclusion of pointless filler.

Conclusion? Don't worry about which show is "darker" and "less childish." If you enjoyed the older series, you'll enjoy the newer one too. Just don't expect it to be Hunter x Hunter 1999 Redux; this is an entirely new show with its own identity.

(Small note: I don't consider the OVAs to be a part of the older series, since they were directed by someone else.)

I much prefer 2011's pacing, though I enjoyed the original's music and cel animation. But, the latter is really dragged out with filler - the biggest reason I'm struggling to keep watching it.

I like the 2011 version more, The soundtracks are killing me especially the sad moments, Pacing is entertaining more, And don't let me start talking about the art, Overall the remake is the winner here.

Interesting replies, seems like it's worth bumping up on my plan to watch after all.

Sounds like things get pretty crazy. One thing I'll really miss is the OST from the old version, it fit the series very well.

I'd say watch it. Sure you can just jump to where the older series dropped off, but the suden wave of different voices, and art may throw you off. Better have a gradual introduction imo

I like the 1999 better. The original animation while not as "pretty" simply has much better direction. Though I do feel the 1999 one could have done without the fillers.

However, the new version is doing the later arcs and then some. This alone is worth watching it for me.

Agreed! No one understands what I mean when I say 1999, while not having as good artwork, has better animation overall.

I personally like the 1999 version better it has a different feel to it, that said the 2011 version is really good nonetheless and definitely worth watching. While I think the 1999 version is better till the GI arc the 2011 adaptation of the GI arc is much better imo and the Chimera Ant arc that is being animated right now is just amazingly well done, so yea you should watch it for sure.

When I caught up with the newest episodes of HxH 2011 I tried watching 1999 version and I couldn't really make it. Then I watched some videos comparing these series.

I agree that 1999 version has really good ost... wait, it has brilliant music... But some soundtracks should be imo more subtle, more like ambient music... just like in movies - it's about making a background, not taking the foreground (in 1999 ver. I couldn't focus on fights). Ergo in previous version atmosphere changes too rashly and sudden and it creates mood too strongly in some cases (sometimes it feels artificially).
For 2011 version I can say that soundtrack is just... poor. There are some good tracks like Latent Power (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14uceBAu17o) or
Auras (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsf4B19Qo3o), but they are being used to frequently or it's just a feeling I have... The point is, the ambient tracks are ok, but too subtle. It's like one's disadvantage is another's advantage :D.

Animation was good at these years so I can't complain, but I definitely wouldn't say that it's better than 2011 ver. Camera angles are horrible when looking at it from today's perspective. Character art is ok, but can't say the same thing for background art. Also seiyuu in 2011 is way better... which makes characters a lot deeper.

From what I noticed, 1999 has more comedy in it... and... that's not an advantage for me. Because the humor here is childish imo and if they can't dose it rationally it may ruin the mood. I don't know exactly why, but humor i saw in 2011, even though childish, made me smile almost everytime... I guess it is just better... or it's because of music...

Of course it's just my opinion based only on watching a few episodes of 1999 and listening to ost :P.

I prefer 1999 version of Hunter X Hunter because of its atmosphere, soundtracks and uniqueness + creativity of camera angles.
