Hey,
I'm 21 years old, from Luxembourg and I'm studying economics. During my spare time I enjoy watching movies, tv shows and, of course, anime (and as a student I have a lot of spare time). I only got into anime a year and a half ago, the only side of anime I knew out of my childhood, were series like Pokémon etc. But I really got curious about Anime since I discovered that Anime has a lot more to offer!

As for music, I listen to nearly everything, but mostly I'm into rock/metal and electronic music.

I decided to join because I want to get in touch with the people I'm sharing a common interest with ;)

About my anime preferences:

I like:
-Unique art or OST
-Original stories/characters, unique universe
-Crazy stories/characters, and things which are totally random
-Fantasy worlds

I (generally) dislike:
-ecchi (imo, ecchis always follow the same stereotypes and clichés which makes them kinda boring, and I don't really like this kind of humour)
-romance without any progression (e.g. if they don't even kiss, or if there are like 24 ep's about a MC who is not being able to accept and/or express his/her feelings)
-periodic series, without real storyline behind it (counter-example: cowboy bebop)

btw, I'm open to any kind of anime/manga recommendations, since lately I have trouble finding some good stuff ;) Sorry for the lenghty introduction!

Yeah, I marathoned both seasons of Code Geass too. It's hard not to with that show. I loved Cat Shit One and would highly recommend it to anyone. I think I did tell as many people as I could think of about it after seeing it. A shame they only made one episode. If I was a manga reader maybe I'd check it out. Hopefully they'll release more at some point, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well it is no masterwork. But since it is only one episode you can simply watch it, even if you don't like it, you only have wasted 20 minutes of your time. There no reason to not give this anime a try (well is it even an anime?)

And I'm also happy that you're able to refer to anime as "cartoons". I can't stand it when people are arguing about how anime shouldn't be called cartoons!

lol, I agree. Same thing with people saying manga or graphic novels aren't comic books. Yes, there are some differences, but many more similarities.

Hello everyone, I'm demonturtle, nice to meet you :)

I'm 21 and starting college in July to become a Medical Adminstrative Specialist, pretty much like a secretary. I watch pretty much anything that interests me so I'm easy to please. I got started in anime by watching Sailor Moon in elementary school, waking up at 6 O' clock to watch it on the weekdays.

Then I pretty much continued from there and started watching more :D I live in the U.S. so I've had to sit through some horrible dubs back then, but thats fine. I like both Japanese and American voices now. Its nice to meet other people who enjoy anime

Hello everyone, I'm Pirating_Ninja and I hope to get along with all of you ^_^

Things about myself ... Let's see, I'm now 20 years old, In my second year of college, majoring in Molecular Biology, outside of anime/manga I like to play League of Legends as well as generally just hang out w/ friends ... I also LOVE Hookah if that counts as anything worth mentioning. Also I am really only intolerant of one thing - Intolerance, I am okay someone who is intolerant as long as they don't try and force their intolerance on me or try and make it a fact (I think the biggest one recently is homosexuality, I am not myself homosexual however I really do not approve of how extreme some people are in there bigotry towards the subject)

As far as anime/manga goes, I enjoy just about every genre (aside from Yaoi/Yuri/NTR/Ecchi+Harem) ... the first anime I ever saw was Kiki's Delivery Service which I actually re-rented from BlockBuster for like 3 months straight (had the memory span of a gold fish so I was perfectly fine re-watching it like every day, feel bad for my parents looking back at it though), I didn't seriously start watching anime until around 9 years ago when I saw Rurouni Kenshin on Toonami, was around then I discovered I could watch anime online, after around 5 years of solid anime watching I sort of turned my attention to manga which is where I am at now (sort of prefer manga since the originals usually have the complete story as well as plot is better as long as you don't mind no color / noise / motion)

I think my favorite genre is definitely Action followed closely by romance (mostly romance manga, most of my favorite romances don't have an anime adaptation so...)

I do have a rather extensive list of some of my favorite things (both anime/manga related as well as just in general so feel free to check out my profile if you ever are curious)

Other than that it's good to meet you all and I look forward to getting to know everyone better ^_^

Hi everyone!

My name is Carla. I live in South Africa.

I just turned 21 and am in my final year of studying animation. I am a fanatic gamer and hope to end up in the animation section of the video game industry.

I've been doing a ton of freelance work and can finally afford to go to Anime Expo in LA this year! It'll be my first time traveling to America, so if anyone has any tips on what to do and what not to do, I'd really appreciate the input. :D

Other than that there's not much to know. I'm looking forward to discussing all kinds of stuff with all the awesome people here. ^_^

Welcome (noob here myself) but!!! I went to the Anime Expo 2011 not last year but the year before that (so Anime Expo 2011), It was pretty fun however ... Nobody knew what Beelzebub was (the manga was already at around 60-80 chapters) so was kind of surprised ... Overall though ... Well ... It was okay and definitely worth going to once in your life but I think they still need another few years to get all of the things worked out ...

As for tips about America (especially LA) ... The anime expo if I remember correctly is around Little Tokyo, so it isn't a bad place of LA but just don't walk down any back street alleys alone, especially if you are a foreigner w/ an accent since people would pick up on that and be more likely to harass you (for multiple reasons its easier to pick on foreigners) ... However having said that I doubt anything like that would happen.

The cost though ... That is a real concern, EVERYTHING in LA is expensive, a can of soda is probably $1.50 or maybe even $2 at the Expo, plus the ATM's (not sure if you would be using an ATM, doubt it though, but if you are...) have like a mile long line (2 ATM's for like a bajillion people just doesn't work) ... But aside from all this it is very lively and pretty cool. It was semi-weird for me since it was my first anime convention (And only) so wasn't used to crowds of cosplayers but ... well it wasn't as scary in that regard as I thought it would be (honestly thought that there would be like 30+ year olds wearing sailor moon outfits or something else freaky like that, which even as a joke ... is freaky) ...

I think my favorite part of the expo though would be the Art ... just seeing all the fan made art was pretty fun (I bought a few but Ironically my favorite piece was this)

Unfortunately I can't give you too many tips about America in general, I live near LA (San Diego, about 90 minutes south of LA) but I'm used to American culture so I don't think of things that would be "good to know" as someone coming to America ...

I guess the only things I can think would be

A) If you wanna save as much as possible make sure to pay attention to the route the Taxi takes to your hotel if you are using a taxi (sometimes they will loop around for a bit of extra cash though not usually)
B) If you do Cosplay for the Expo Don't cosplay when leaving (IE don't walk around town in cosplay) America is no more open to anime than any other country, IE you will be out of place very very fast.
C) I'm not sure how thick a South African accent is but as w/ any other English speaking country, if you have a thick accent and speak fast, they will usually go "what?" or "could you repeat that", I would just say talk slower (sometimes people think they are asking "what?" because they didn't hear you, and it's impolite to say "I can't understand you" so ... kind of get this long match of "huh?" "-repeat-")

I dunno what else would help ... from my experience you can consider America not exactly friendly, but not unfriendly either, usually people will be rather neutral... But yeah, just no that LA is expensive as heck so be prepared to spend some cash, even just for food =/

I actually planned to go to Comic Con, but I had to change my plans when tickets sold out in 6 minutes. So anime Expo it is. :)

I'd prefer if the people didn't take too much notice of me, I'm far from social and would prefer to avoid confrontation if possible.

I don't think I have a thick accent, but I don't sound anything like an American, I could always try imitating the American accent, but I'd probably insult a few people with that attempt. :P

I think I'm going to eat very little and walk everywhere... need to save money to buy anime and other paraphernalia that I can't easily get here in SA. Not to mention that the dollar is about 10 times stronger than SA currency. :/

I'll be in New York before and after Anime Expo, anything I should know about NY?

I'm even more nervous about going to the States alone now, my people skills are sorely lacking. o_o

Thanks for all the advice!! XD

Alone? Well ... Definitely don't stay out too late (again it's not dangerous, it's just ... kind of like something that probably applies everywhere, most likely nothing will happen but why risk it?)

As for New York ... From what I have heard (never been) you kind of have to expect people being rude (IE yelling at you when they claim your in the way or stuff like that), very busy city, and I'm pretty sure also very expensive cost of living there too ... But yeah, nobody is usually looking for trouble (except late at night hence don't stay out alone late at night) so ... if you just kind of mind your own business nobody will care too much, if people do take notice it'll most likely be due to recognizing you are a foreigner in which case they will probably be friendly and simply ask you a few questions, like where your from, perhaps what your doing her (school/vacation/other) and stuff like that ... If you do cosplay at the convention people might ask to take your picture however other than that not a whole lot of socializing w/ strangers in a convention for anime fans (not exactly the most outgoing group on average)

As for the Accent (was curious since I don't recall every hearing it ... even though I had a South African friend through elementary school ... go figure, my memory is apparently top notch) so went on Youtube ... the guy was kind of pissed about how English/Australians/Americans portray the accent however aside from that it was very easy to understand (probably won't have any trouble with understanding ... people will just notice your foreign)

I also thought of this earlier, you probably won't have to worry too much about "American Culture" or doing anything offensive (as long as you use common sense, like don't punch a police officer) because America doesn't have an established culture ... It's a mesh of cultures so people are pretty used to when someone does something that isn't their own culture ... This isn't true the entirety of America, however The West Coast and New York are 2 very diverse areas so their is a good chance people won't notice your foreign until they hear your accent ... don't worry about being rude basically ... and if New York is like how I have heard, and you do get yelled or cussed at, just blow it off because they probably do that to everyone ...

Also just kind of make sure you know the "safe" areas, of both New York and LA, Their are some parts of both of these cities you DO NOT want to be walking down alone at night ...

I realize I kind of made America sound "dangerous", this is not at all true, but since it is your first time in a new and unfamiliar place, and your alone, it's probably best not do wander down alleys and side streets ... just as much because getting lost will suck as it is dangerous ... Wanna make that clear, when you hear the term "first world problems" ("I just bought an iPhone 4 but the iPhone 5 comes out next week, now I'm gonna have to wait 2 years for the contract to end to get it") basically describes the US ...

welcome jon...or jack...hope you enjoy it here!!

@cryptic
i've been to NY many many times, much of my family is from that area...and the "rudeness" thing is really overblown. it's just busy...know where you're going, don't stop and gawk, if you're ordering food, know what you're gonna get before you step in line, things like that. other than that, people are pretty friendly tbh. they are very proud of their city, and are often eager to help you find things, even more so once they hear your accent (my experience, NYers love visitors way more than LAeans who seem to treat visitors as invaders or outsiders, just my experience tho).
as far as the neighborhoods, most places are safe during the day, but like pirate said, know where you are at night. if you stick to like midtown manhattan, you're fine, but stay away from Rockaway, Jamaica...i know Brooklyn has been built up, and it's becoming hipster central, but a lot of it is still sketchy to me, i'd have to research the good areas though...also Washington Heights, even Chinatown can be sketchy. if you do your research though, you can figure out pretty quickly where to avoid and where to stick to. it's NY, there's no secrets :P.

Welcome Jack ... And Jon? I have seen John but never Jon, pretty cool... Also 96 0_0 ... Darn you started young ...

@ Crypic / Bill

Yeah, had no idea about NY since only heard experience from tourists (IE the people who would stand and gawk) which I figured was never wise in a busy city ... but yeah, I don't really like LA either, much prefer my hometown of San Diego where it pretty much stays 70 degrees Fahrenheit year round (maybe gets up to 80 more often then not in summer and 60 during winter ... but meh), and the beaches (if you know where to go) are never too crowded ... plus don't have to pay a huge fortune to own a house 15 minutes away from the ocean (just a small one) ... And the people are very relaxed, nobody is in a rush ... after living in the Central Valley for college I have realized just how great San Diego is ... T.T I miss the weather...

Anyways yeah, I would highly advise just knowing where your going, and this is true of all major cities ... also I'm not sure how you plan to go from NY --> LA --> NY but if you are thinking of taking a bus system by the name of Grey Hound to save money, don't ... just don't ... that would give you a horrible experience for sure.

no i'm not saying that...just don't stop in the middle of the sidewalk and take pictures, find a spot to the side or whatever, out of the way...like pirate said, like any big city. it's not that big of a deal to worry too much about, just use common sense. NYers make themselves out to be very busy, but if you're not inconveniencing them, they're very helpful. like i said, they're very proud of their city and many times, love talking about where is nice to go.

only been watching for about a year now. any suggestions? i've put up most of the ones i've seen. what should I look for next?

Hello. I am Joel, a 21 year old University student in England studying History and Politics. Still not sure what I want to do after graduating though, just be happy to finish I guess :p.

Mainly enjoy Mecha and school themed anime, and romance manga nowadays, though often depends on what mood I am in. Used to play Pokemon competitively and was pretty good, but haven't played since about last July, though will probably get back into it when 6th gen comes around (couldn't stand 5th gen).

Was nicknamed Pikachu at school for some reason - can only guess that it was because I was small (had who knows how many small height related nicknames), enjoyed playing Pokemon, and my face went red when embarrassed a lot...

Yeah, I'm not a huge Lelouch fan either. Johnny Bosch was brilliant playing him though (in the English dub that is).

Only reason I don't score shows is I get stupidly nitpicky over scores and end up changing them too often that just decided to add a few favourite things in instead :p

Yeah. I am pretty much like that, especially with airing shows. Just can't find a way to stop my MAL average from going down man! haha

Hello, people! My name is Ronan, I'm 26 and, at the moment, I'm just a worker, I live in Brazil.
In fact, do not have much to tell about me.
I found this site very practical idea to exchange experiences with other fans of the anime world.
Thank you, and let's go watch animes!

Hi everyone!

I'm new here and I'm already struggling with the intro. I'm in my late 20s, currently working on administrative job in a company and watching anime in my free time (which is sadly so little lately). I also like to do yoga, cycle, read, do something creative etc.

First anime I ever saw was Saber Rider. I don't remember any of the plot, just the characters :P Later I watched anime on RLT 2 almost every day (used to run home from school to get on time for new episodes). I actually liked german dub, even though it's not my first language. I also remember watching DBGT on some polish channel with one guy voicing all the characters. Those were fun times :D

I watch pretty much everything if story interests me, but I guess I like comedies the most. Lately I'm enjoying reading manga more than watching anime, especially if it's not on pc.

Now I ended up rambling too much..

Welcome, Dame. I've been recently trying to start a yoga routine. Due to health issues I've had to stop working out, but I'm hoping to at least do some yoga.
