Just started watching the anime and currently watching episode 4. Quite similar to the sum of both anime but it is still very good. Looking forward for more.

I can see how they could be similar, but only a little as in they both are based either on a game or in a game. But they handle it way differently, I like Greed Island way more.

HxH is not the typical shonen like the crap you see everyday and yea GI pretty much craps on SAO story-wise :D

Not really :P One difference is that they don't sparkle twilight-style whent hey die, they kinda....have their eyes popout along with their brains and limbs when they explode, a bit more realistic xD

Anyway GI overall was better than SAO, but the animation of it was just horrible (I'm looking forward for it in Madhouse's adaptation when they reach it in a couple of months). One of the things that make GI interesting is that it's an arc of a series (Hunter x Hunter) with a plot that started like more than 50 episodes ago, not to mention that we already know some of the characters.

So yea for me:

Oh my bad, oh well, I read somewhere and they referred 3 big mainstream shounen as naruto, bleach, op which is still on going. ( the same apply for all the shounen which was still on going for like a decade ... )

so I just think FMAB as a shounen.

If you're planning to watch HxH then prepare yourself for lots and lots of similarities with Naruto. Kishimoto said he was "inspired" by Togashi's HxH but I think what he did was ripping it off (Naruto was serialized around a year after HxH). There's seriously a great amount of similarities, just like there is between Bleach x Yu Yu Hakusho (which is also a work by Togashi), and Fairy Tail x One Piece. But well the original works are always better.

On a side note, about FMA:B, I watched 20 episodes and it's still not as great as people are saying it is, so when does its "greatness" starts?

Mainstream: Products and services which are readily available to and appealing to the general public, as opposed to being of interest only to a very specific subset of the public.

example: a shounen who sells a lot and has a lot of propaganda and products (Naruto / One Piece / FMA etc)

"Big 3" is a term used for the "TOP 3" best sellers of Shonen Jump.

@Candor: Well I guess it's up to each person taste ... from my perspective it started to be good around episode 6-7 as I found alchemist, conspiracy, character interesting, smoothy animations ( it's one of BONEs production) and the plot was definitely catchy. Btw, I'm not gonna read/watch HxH o.O

I'm at episode 14 and it's pretty crap compared to the original FMA, every scene was ruined, not to mention the overuse of comedy...gets annoying. I've been told that after 20 it gets better

If Togashi only didn't take that much breaks then HxH would be among WSJ's best sellers in Bleach's place, it sold more than Bleach in its latest volumes. It's just funny how other mangaka just rip-off Togashi's works and rise to a huge fame while Togashi's works are just known for people who lived in the 1990s and watched his works at that time, yes I'm talking about Bleach and Naruto here.

I'd give it a 7-8/10 till ep.20 but I was wondering why it's that great on MAL to be the 2nd or 3rd ranked anime. Well I guess it's up to tastes, I might continue watching it since I have some free time and see for myself, it's better than just hearing from people.

You don't look like a shounen fan so I'm not really saying to watch HxH, I was just trying to say there are similarities between it and Naruto. From what you said about FMA:B it looks like you'd watch a shonen with a deep plot or theme, so try watching Magi when it airs this fall, it talks about politics, slavery, poverty, and economics, some of these themes start early some will start around episodes 20-25.

Yup, pretty much there xD, durarara! as one example of a shounen genre which I watched. ( not talking about shounen manga/adaption related).

Actually I picked up most of the show at the start of each season ( except for those I don't like ), HxH was one of the fall anime 2011 i picked up(remade version of 1999), I watched the first ep and decided not to carry on ...

Maybe I will find something interesting in Magi ...

HxH is a lot different from Naruto/One Piece/Bleach....it is closer to FMA/Death Note later on, it gets darker...and eventually deeper with the ant arc and becomes something else entirely, it keeps changing for the better, the first episode is quite misleading...that's why the removal of the kite scene was a bad idea.

But when you compare it to stuff like SAO or other stuff like that, it's much better and well-thought out :P

As for FMA, it's pretty great, one of the few shonens that are good

the 3 big title is only referred to the top 3 titles from Shonen Jump. FAMB was not from Jump.

And Bleach is not in the top 3 titles anymore.
It's a fight between Naruto, One Piece, Toriko, Nisekoi and Sket Dance.

Can't really say that Greed Island is better or worse than SAO, because of it's major differences.

HxH starts a bit slow but gets better with time, it also gets darker and gorier and as it goes by, in the latest arc it's as if Madhouse are saying fy for the censorship laws in Japan, especially that HxH airs at 11:00 am, and ironically it's still getting high ratings and it's enters the top 10 ranking anime once in a while, but I'm not sure if you're gonna like it anyway, you're not a shounen fan so you probably won't.

Since the last year it seems that bleach lost his place.
Check this volume by volume chart here and you'll see that 5 volumes of Bleach were in the top 50 in that year, and how many did Toriko have in the top 50? None. Toriko's anime started in 2011 so the sales of the previous volumes got a boost, that's it.

Shoujo - lit. "young woman", a genre intended for the adolescent to teenage female demographic.
Fanservice - fan service.

Clannad =~= dunno
Ef =/= shoujo imo
Spice and wolf = Animal Planet
Toradora =~= dunno + some fanservice
Durarara = DRRRRR
Baccano = weird
Steins;gate = Einstein service
Madoka = psycho brainfuck
Code Geass = Japanese batman
DtB = Chinese batman
F/Z = insufficient amount of Tohsaka Rin
Claymore = boring

Wait for it to get away from the original, everybody talks about how the first half was too fast and they don't see why it's so good, but by the end you will love it. For me I started to like it at like episode 24, but the last 20 episodes are epic. There is a reason why it's taken the 2nd spot for so long.

And what happened to this thread
