| Oh I've been waiting for this. Gaara vs. Lee was the absolute undisputed peak of my younger Naruto viewing days, it was up there for my favorite fights in anime, might've even been my number one at some point. Without the animation to elevate it, I'm sure it won't reach the same level of hype as it once did (not to mention, my interests have shifted since I was younger) but I'm still excited to revisit a childhood favorite. Onto structural notes, I love a lot about this set-up. Before the Chunin Exams formally began there were two characters introduced as high targets (for Sasuke in particular, and thus the viewer as Sasuke was demonstrable the strongest of the team), Lee and Gaara. So having the two most long-hyped up characters into combat is a stroke of genius. Not to mention both Gaara and Lee got impressive feats during the second exam too. Gaara's was a straight up blood-bath and while Lee's fight didn't go nearly as well for him, it was still impressive for three-on-one whilst protecting someone, and we get it explicitly stated (by Tenten in fairness) that Lee would've won had Sakura not been present. Finally, of these two new strong characters, their personalities have been presented as polar opposites. Gaara's fight was a blood-bath, seemingly of blood-lust and necessity, whereas Lee's was an act of chivalry. While Gaara's been terse and scary, Lee's been talkative and affable. This match was set-up by having them established early on and consistently as two of the strongest in the Exam and the conflict brews from the opposite personality. It's such a great way to subtly build to an encounter between the two and easily the best way Kishimoto has utilized the Exam structure for the story's benefit. |
