Watched the movie at the theaters today, and I loved every single moment of it! I forgot how much I love Xiaohei and Wuxian, particularly their relationship with each other (like father and son). That being said, LOL when Xiaohei beat the crap out of the guy who transformed himself into Wuxian to get Xiaohei to stop beating him up. And Luye laughing for once and recording the moment :'D Although Xiaohei loves Wuxian, he still enjoyed the chance to being able to beat up Wuxian for once, unlike during his training, haha.
Xiaohei is a really fun character to watch, I love how pure and straightforward he is. Some moments that I remember in the movie was when Luye "borrowed" a car the first time, and Xiaohei says, "it's robbery!" And when Luye tells him she's just borrowing the car, he retorts that borrowing is when you ask another person (but she knocked the human out lol). Then when Xiaohei straight up says that Luye is a bad guy after figuring out that she was planning to bait the perpetrators on the plane ride, endangering all the humans on the plane. He's such a good kid. Oh, and the exchange at the end when Xiaohei asks Wuxian if he can buy one ice scream, but if it tastes bad, could he get another one :')
The theme of the movie this time focuses even more heavily on human versus spirits than the first movie, and I think it was well executed. Incredibly interesting how Elder Lingyao changed his stance from wanting to coexist with humans to wanting to kill them. And as much as most people (spirits) want to believe that they can coexist, I think it was Wuxian who said it first, no one knows which side is right until later on. But I'm glad most of the top dogs (forgot what they're called, are they all just Elders?) are logical. For example, when Muzi (glasses guy) broke up a fight asking if the humans who were caused the incident at the beginning of the movie were the ones they were arguing with. And even Luye, who doesn't really like humans because of what happened to her village, she knows that not every human is the same, and the ones who waged war on her village are already gone.
Speaking of Luye, her backstory of course isn't something we haven't seen in other stories. But what stood out was the montage in the last part of the movie, thinking about it just makes my eyes tear up again. Luye had a lot of anger that she didn't know how to release and deal with, which was really hard to watch. She also didn't really want to completely rely on Wuxian, and wanted to build her own place to live. Although not wanting to eat his food was rather understandable, lol. Poor Wuxian's chicken being caught and roasted by her. But anyways, the whole montage was emotional, it showed that really, it was time that healed her wounds, that even though it was painful at the beginning, she continued to live, to train, to eat. She became strong and became an Enforcer, she led her own team, and then had her own disciples. In the end, she was able to enjoy life. Even though during her time with Wuxian, she didn't seem to show any affection for him, Wuxian still thought of her (and Xiaohei) and the closest people to him, like his family. I thought she would say thank you to Wuxian at the end, but her telling him to visit her sometimes was close to that effect ^^ Which reminds me, it was so cute when Xiaohei said he'll live with his master forever <3
Of course, technical aspects wise, the movie looked great (as expected), I think the action scenes were choreographed even better than in the first movie! Then again, it's been a few years since I've the first movie, but somehow I just feel like the camerawork was even better and easier to follow this time around. Or maybe it's because I watched it on the big screen, haha. We were shown just how crazy powerful Wuxian is when he, just one person, took on the full attacks of what would be seen in war...it was truly insane how he didn't even break a sweat. Although he seemed to have broken at least one or two sweat again the fight with Nezha (which was just to drag out time and make Chinian (angry redhead ponytail guy) give up and let Wuxian take care of retrieving the Ruowood. Also, the music was great, too.
There's probably more that I was thinking during the movie, but I think I've already said enough, lol. If only the movie was airing until next weekend, I'd probably go to watch it again, haha. Story wise, nothing groundbreaking. Enjoyment wise if you like fluid animation, well-choreographed action scenes, and most of all, the characters, then it was a really great movie! (would love to see the first movie in theaters too...) |
