Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking about Berserk lately. The 1997 anime is still considered a classic, and for good reason—it captured the atmosphere of the manga really well, even if it left us hanging on that brutal ending. Then came the 2016 adaptation… and, well, let’s just say the less said about that CGI disaster, the better.

So here’s my question: do you think Berserk will ever get a new adaptation that actually does Miura’s masterpiece justice? The manga is still continuing under Miura’s assistants, so the story isn’t dead, but the anime side feels cursed.

I can imagine a studio like MAPPA, Ufotable, or Wit really nailing it, but at the same time it feels like Berserk is doomed to remain either unfinished or badly adapted forever.

What do you all think? Is there any real hope, or should I just stick to the 1997 anime + manga combo as the definitive Berserk experience?

First of all, while this anime was well received it's nowhere considered a classic.

Pretty sure Studio Eclypse was a scam and they didn't even have the permission to do this in the first place.

With Miura dead, no. I really doubt it.

I think a not insignificant part of what made the '97 anime so good was Miura's direct involvement with that production.

its a tough one to adapt but in all honesty not impossible nothing will come close to the beauty of the manga but we have come close a couple times. studio 4°C did the golden age arc movies and those were beautiful especially when it came to the eclipse. not as violent or gory as the manga and they still left some stuff out but still very good, about as close as you can get to a proper licensed version. then theres studio eclipse who was stopped because of the legality of their project even though they fully stated its a fan project. from the trailers it looks gorgeous and has the potential to be the proper berserk adaptation we wanted, but again was stopped and I personally think they were stopped partly because they were gunna do a better job than anyone else.

Honestly at this point I think it should be left alone and live on just as a manga personally.
I don’t believe they’d adapt the story as is without continuously omitting stuff, which is my main gripe with all the adaptations. I could genuinely live with 2016 more if they at least adapted the story properly, but they couldn’t even get that right. Even as much as I love 97 and the movie trilogy, they still skipped too much for my liking.

I swear to God if I gotta watch another Golden Age adaptation without them adapting The Black Swordsman first I’ll absolutely lose it.

To inform the OP there is a recent attempt in adapting Berserk, obviously.

No. A new adaptation is this modern day and age would get censored to oblivion due to censorship laws being way harsher than they used to be. Not only that but if even if it does get a new adaptation, it’s for sure not gonna meet everyone standards. By that I mean it won’t be a big name studio or have stunning animation of the sort. If anything, the thing that matters the most is the directing. Out of all the mangas out there, this just seems like it’s an impossible dream. Highly doubt it.
