Is it just me, or have I noticed that most people tend to like anime that have witches? Both anime and manga that have witches are always well received by the otaku audience, I myself don't remember any bad anime that has witches

And specifically, I only realized it while watching this Silent Witch one, which has been great so far. What do you think about this? Is there really this trend or am I crazy about it? Because I think that every anime that has a witch is at least okay. I don't know if it's because I love fantasy anime, but when it has witches, I always get even more excited to watch it.

No, they tend to get appealed to sensations greater than a boner with that character's characters, instead of the witch thingy.

Nah, witches are hit or miss with me, it's the setting and and how they fit into it that makes it work.

Silent Witch? OP character amusingly nerfed by lack of confidence, but buffed when numbers come into play. Good stuff.
Witch Watch? Idiot nerfed by lack of a brain, even the Scarecrow would donate what he had left to her. Miss.
That show with the witch who gave no effs about the world as she travelled? Yeah no, hated that one for the character.
Azusa from 300 years killing slimes yadayada? Hit AND miss, depending on whether the comedy hit for the episode.
Going to throw in Chise from Ancient Magus Bride, cuz the traditions are definitely witch-adjacent, and that's another major hit for me.

Witches are just another character type.

the only reason I watch the show is just because the mc is very similiar to Bocchi which means for me she's just Bocchi The Witch. And so far I really like it

Check out Slime 300. It's also about a witch and it wasn't that huge. So no, I disagree.

That 300 years of killing Slimes anime isn't popular though and it has witch as MC.

Personally I think it's indeed mid compared to other witch anime like Elaina.

Anime's with witches are hit or miss...
I picked this up because I see a cute girl and she looks nice.

That and I wanna see how great this can be for Aniplex to dedicate a section on their Sept live stream to announce this adaptation instead of just announcing it on their socmed

Nah it’s really just preference, I mean sure in my case I do like witch characters when handled right. Not every anime portrays them well.

I mean I feel most people just see hot anime girl and click 😭

You don't have to call me out like that. But we got two good anime about witches from this season and last season. Silent witch and Aru majo.

To call it a pattern is being too hasty. Unless this goes on for a year, i wouldn't call this a pattern.

I personally watch anything fantasy with cute girls. Meaning: magic and school in a fantasy world setting. The "Witch" part of it is additional but is not always a good thing. If it's done well like in Silent Witch, it's really good.

I picked up Silent Witch because I saw a cute girl MC and the art looks great, on top of the aforementioned genres I like.

Killing Slimes for 300 Years is also a witch anime, but it's done very poorly in comparison to Silent Witch. So the anime having witches doesn't always mean it's going to be a good anime.

It really depends more on the theme, genres, the studio, and the production quality more than whether or not a main character is a witch.

I hope more good anime like Silent Witch come out, with or without witches.

I don't feel having a witch as the main protagonist automatically makes an Anime 'good'.

For example, a show I enjoyed in Autumn 2020 was...

Wondering Witch: The Journey of Elaina

> [aka by JP title "Majo no Tabitabi"] <

...whereas a show I felt lacklustre about was the KonoSuba Megumin-focused side-series "KonoSuba: An Explosion on this Wonderful World!" from Spring 2023.

The impression I have is some other KonoSuba viewers felt it was mediocre, and that it was only really interesting for Megumin-fans.

For me the humour of KonoSuba only works when all the main characters (Aqua-sama, Darkness, Kazuma and Megumin) are participating.

Even then, Series 3 was a bit 'meh' for me - I would've been content if it had just been kept to two series.

So my point is Majo no Tabitabj was good not just because of the main witch character Elaina, but the story & world events in which she existed that played out each episode.

In contrast the KonoSuba spin-off relied too heavily on the fandom appeal of Crimson Witch Megumin for its success, rather than natural feeling humorous interactions between the main four characters, which is what made the KonoSuba franchise so popular in the beginning.

the witch part really had nothing to do with why i stared watching this or any other show.
i read the synopsis to this and thought itd be a fun little op mc show with jokes about her shyness

300 Years Of Killing Slime has reached volume 28 in Japan though~

To OP:

Silent Witch is different from most of the witch light novels I have read, it focuses more on character development than a cozy life~

In Fall 2025, there will be an anime named Unlimited Gacha, you will be surprised how cringe that series is~

There are a lot of shows with witches that aren't as popular, so I don't think so. Fantasy though, is a big and liked genre, and that often includes some type of a witch, wizard or at least a mage, or a sorcerer type of character. I do love witches personally, but that comes mostly from my childish wish to be one myself and love for magic and fantasy in general. Mages are cool, whether they are witches or not. In video games too I prefer magic to melee/guns usually. Also, heavily depends on the witch, but I haven't yet encountered one that I would *dislike*, it's either "hell yeah I like this witch" or quite neutral.

I think it's more that, Fantasy anime almost always have witches in it, or rather the larger, MAGE jobs, we like the magic fantasy stuff, not witch in particular
And when you combine magic fantasy stuff with cute girls that anyone likes already it makes this crazy combo of likeable character

@Tarrian perfect answer and animes for explanation, all setting it's important: since the mc and others, the plot... you already say at all, thanks

No, there's plenty of witch anime that aren't so great, whether something is good or not, or well received or not doesn't depend on what type of character the MC is. Heck they could be a sewage specialist and the anime could be really good if it's done right.

Now as for whether or not there's favoritism towards types of anime, that's a different matter. I think it's pretty clear that Japanese manga authors REALLY like high school settings and teen aged characters, I mean how many anime have an adult MC vs a teen MC? Even then, there's plenty of horrible anime with high school settings and teen aged characters.

Is there favoritism of certain genres, types or styles of shows? Yeah, but favoritism doesn't exactly make something good.
I like to watch some anime, I like to talk about some anime, I dislike wars over some anime, but more than anything I love to live my life, anime is an enjoyable and entertaining addition onto my life but it's not my whole life.
