Kazuhiko Torishima, former editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen Jump, took a swipe at Attack on Titan during a press meet at Japan Expo 2025, claiming that despite its global buzz, the manga ultimately failed to have a lasting impact or sales.

As reported by DB-Z, Torishima critiqued Attack on Titan for being complex and failing to engage readers long-term. “Creating a character is a simple thing. Even a child can do it,” he stated. He cited his conversation with a German publisher, who said Attack on Titan "made a lot of noise" while it aired, but its manga sales quickly fell off once the anime ended. In contrast, he highlighted Dragon Ball and Naruto as examples of manga that continue to sell consistently, even years after their anime adaptations concluded.

do you agree with him? does attack on titan complex story bad or mid? while the simple story of dragon ball and naruto are better?

Again, people are missing his point. Shonen series' main attraction is their longevity and entertainment value. Within the context of shonen, AoT is without a doubt a financial failure. That's why magazines like Shonen Jump or Kodansha have created a formula they follow for 90% of the stories they produce. Complexity only hurts them financially.

Also, the anime is way better than the manga, so there isn't that much reason to go read it, specially now that the anime adapted everything

It was always a shonen until the end. It got published in a shonen magazine the whole way through. Y’all people think because something is written a bit more complex and maturely it automatically becomes seinen. Shonen is not a genre ffs
