Just watched both version of both seasons, this will be spoiler free.

Things that apply in general:

  • The TV Anime are in 4:3, the movies are in 16:9
  • Each is a sequel of it's own version counterpart
  • While the movie version's animation and artstyle aged pretty well, one might feel issues with the TV version not caring about lighting at all (Every character's color palette is the same in every scene)
  • Assuming you don't skip OP/ED, it will take close to 11 hours (10 hours and 50 minutes, 5 hours and 25 mins for each season) to watch the TV Anime versions, while the movie counterparts wold be only 4 hours and 40 minutes (2 hours and 10 minutes for the first, and 2 hours and 30 minutes for the second).
  • Alisa/Arisa and Suzuka appear way less in the movies.
  • The movies have slightly different designs.
  • The movies contain visible nipples and more crotch-shots, if you're into that.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha vs Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: The Movie 1st:

  • The overall stories are roughly the same, with mostly changed to details.
  • The anime is more Nanoha-focused, while the movie is more Fate-focused
  • The anime focus more on building the characters' personalities, while the movie explains how magic works better.
  • The anime has a lot of fanservice/cameos for the Triangle Heart: Sweet Songs Forever, which are vastly reduced on the movie.
  • The movie retroactively adds the character of Linith/Rinith, which only first appears/is mentioned in the second season.
  • Likewise, Inteligent Devices speak here, while they only start doing so in the second season.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's vs Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: The Movie 2nd A's:

  • The TV Anime and Movie version have VASTLY different stories, though the share most of their main points.
  • Yuuno and Chrono appear way less in the movie than they do in the TV anime
  • 3-4 characters are completely absent in the movie
  • The backstory for certain concepts in different (And incompatible) in both versions
  • The character of "Reinforce I", which has a minor role and barely appears in the TV Anime, has much more presence and agency in the movie version
  • Alisa/Arisa and Suzuka are EXTRA-SHAFTED in the movie version.
  • Both epilogues are different.

I wrote this thread before watching StrikerS and ViVid.
Since doing so, the changes make way more sense: It's about making the first two seasons closer to StrikerS, both in terms of designs and also in "expectations".
By "expectations" I mean that it makes that Arisa and Suzuka are shafted and Yuuno/Chrono are less present since, well, that's literally what happens in StrikerS (And also the extra focus on Reinforce).

Also, apparently Rynith is originally from a Sound Stage that was released before season 2.

I know I'm late but thank you so much for this! :) I plan to start watching this series. Always have wanted to since I was a child in my magical girl phase (long gone but not forgotten), but I think I'll watch the movie and see if I'll try the series later.

@yawnaroo
Some good things to know is that the movies bring elements which were originally only in anime side-materials or added in future installments.
It worth knowing that technically they are "different universes", the the remake movies are followed by Reflection/Destruction.
