Tendency to give reviews to longer series without knowledge of previous seasons

Am I the only one who feels that there has been an upward trend in the resency of people on mal who don't even bother to watch all the seasons of a series, just the latest one?

And if you go into that person's profile, it turns out that she has seen maybe the top 10 series and gives each one a rating of 1-3.

For example, I recently saw a review person for My Hero Academia up to season 6, which did not even watch the previous seasons, but gave a rating to the series, based on the current season.

Such examples can be mentioned endlessly. E.g. Kuroshitsuji, Mushoku Tensei, Haikyu, Ao no Exorcist, Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken etc.

Maybe I'm getting oversensitive, but such people simply embarrass themselves.

Do people simply don't want to catch up on the series, and then are surprised that they don't understand what's going on, or perhaps such accounts are only used to underrate and bait reviews?

It doesn't make much sense to me either.

"or perhaps such accounts are only used to underrate and bait reviews?"

This is probably sometimes the case.

@Serafos

You know, and then one wonders why today's audiences have too low expectations if they can give some brainless shounen a 10, and a series that requires thinking or concentration at a screening 1-3. xDD

Sounds like typical Pokemon viewers.

If the latest season is getting the most hype, newcomers may not think previous seasons are worth watching. Even if fans say they recommend the whole series, the hype says otherwise.

It could be possible that those people already watched other seasons of the show, but just didn't bother adding them to their list to figure out ratings for them. But I wouldn't doubt that people create accounts just to lower the scores of other anime from their favorites. There are some super defensive fans in this community when it comes to how well-received their favorites are.

I agree this is weird. They probably wouldn’t open a new book to the middle and then start reading it there, so why are they doing it with a TV series, and then wondering why they aren’t fully enjoying it? And even if they do enjoy it, how do they know they wouldn’t have gotten much more out of it if they’d watched it as it was meant to be seen?

I actually don't see a problem with this, as long as the reviewer clearly states that they haven't seen the previous seasons.

It's up to the reader to decide whether a review is useful or not.

I watched Megalobox Season 2 without watching Season 1 first, and I liked it so much that I wrote a review for it. I still believe that Season 2 of that show can be watched before Season 1, and in the review I tried to explain why. I'd like to think that has some value to someone.

I know users who only watched the second season of Ashita no Joe. So yeah it happens and it's weird.

I watched Dragon Ball Z before watching Dragon Ball. It wasn't a big deal. After watching Dragon Ball I can say that it wasn't even relevant to understand Z.
Battle Shounen tend to be like that.

@Zarutaku I don't think Pokémon counts, it's not like that's a closely tied series of events, the protagonist is just forever 10, and collects Pokémon, only to release them soon after so that the viewer doesn't need to remember where he caught them.

It's true. In fact, it can be pulled up that Ash at the beginning of the next season gets amnesia and forgets the caught pokomons from the previous region.

In addition, this series is mainly aimed at a younger audience, and it is already clear the MC must be in their age range.

@Otaku-Aniki Also he could have become a Pokémon master in season 1, if he just keeps levelling up Charizard!
(Yes, I'm mad about that, even though like 20 years passed.)

@JaniSIr That's true, but if they did that they couldn't then bump up game sales. Quite a few people of the rest are of the opinion that if he had become a champion so quickly then the sequels would have missed the point because Ash's original goal would have been fulfilled.

@Otaku-Aniki I eventually lost interest even as a child just because they introduced too many new Pokémon, there was supposed to be 151 of them 😡
I get why they milked the plot for over 20 years, but doesn't make for a good viewing experience in my book.

You know, the one thing I regret most is the lack of desire to adapt the Pocket Monster Special manga.

The manga is three times better than the current universe created by the anime.

In the manga, the characters have character and can think, well, and there are times that are not necessarily suitable for the eyes of young viewers.

Such a flavor. The manga is more faithful to the stories known from the games than the anime itself xD

Overall, I recommend you give the manga a chance. Well, but the number of volumes can be a bit daunting [at this point, 64 volumes have already come out].

@Otaku-Aniki Pokémon at this point is a passing nostalgia, in high school I got an emulator to play Fire Red once I got a smart phone, since that was a game I never actually owned, but even that was a decade ago.

The original writer didn't enjoy that sort of series either. It's what led him to quit during Johto.
