Controversial but compelling stories that you won't recommend to your friends?

Some manga really blow us away, but they'll be the last things we'd think to recommend to anyone in good conscience.

An example for me is Kimi ga Bokura wo Akuma to Yonda Koro/Back When You Called Us Devils. It covers some gruesome subject matter, and the mangaka elected to use middle/highschool-aged kids to deliver it. I still really liked the story's way of addressing its central question: Can those proven capable of evil be trusted to be reformed? In other words, are they capable of truly changing, or do they just get better at hiding?

A probably more common one is Made in Abyss, for the mangaka's method of expressing his thinly veiled fetishes despite demonstrating some gr8 world building.

These two sit among my favourite manga. What are some of yours and why?

There's a number of compelling doujinshis that I wouldn't recommend because of the erotica (and other taboo factors), but a SFW answer that immediately came to my mind is "Watashi no Shounen." I need to reread it some day, but I remember finding that series to be very compelling. It deals with an age gap relationship so that limits who I'd recommend it to because some people would be squeamish about that.

@bucciest Ahaha, I know the feel. One of the most well drawn horror stories I've read falls into the erotica territory and it's so deranged that it was hard even for me to sit through it. Watashi no Shounen actually looks like something I'd be interested in reading though, so thank you for mentioning it.

@Lucifrost I respect that. I can only unapologetically recommend things I think are controversial when I know the other person is reeeally into something the story excels at, otherwise it just sits in my memory to rot.

@Devilsuppercut that is a sick setting for a romance tbh.

wow, Back When You Called Us Devils, that manga was an absolute garbage, a never ending series of plot conveniences that always favor the MC and an MC that supposedly wants to atone but does absolutely nothing in order to accomplish such goal, apologist bullshit so devoid of any sense that makes you average hentai's plot look like a fucking masterpiece
