An analytic a priori truth is: “All bachelors are unmarried” — because the truth of this sentence is contained within it; as such, it can be deduced and known prior to experience in virtue of what the terms in that sentence mean. A synthetic a posteriori truth would be: “All swans are white” — because this involves a synthesis of empirical concepts and can only be known after experience. The above is just first year university philosophy. What I’m interested in is the two types of truth in the title of this thread: Analytic a posteriori truths and synthetic a priori truths. | I guess the main question is, what does "synthetic" and "analytic" mean in this context, because according to wikipedia "A priori knowledge is independent from any experience" and "a posteriori knowledge depends on empirical evidence", so your examples don't actually illustrate what "synthetic" and "analytic" mean in this context. |
