Personally i think that ecchi is in this category , people who love it really love it , and watch a lot and people who hate it , just physically can't watch it , and think that shouldn't exist for a lot of stupid reasons.

Isekai is also here , i personally hate it , like many others do , but people who love it watch A LOT of it most of the time.

Gamers! is probably the biggest example of it.

From what I have seen, it's either one of your favourite romcoms, or you find it insufferable lol

Though, Biggest on a whole may be a lie, considering how stuff like Evangelion exist, but it IS the biggest example that isn't mentioned very often.

Cute Girls Doing Cute Things. You either find it very cute or very cringy especially if you love or grew up watching 80s and 90s anime

@Serafos This seems about right. Everything else feels like it also has a sizable enough grey area where I could say it's not as divisive as people make it seem.

Even with shounen stuff, I get the feeling most people are just kinda neutral to it. But the neutral are never the most vocal.

I think Iyashikei is a good example of this.

No other anime fits the description better than Mushoku Tensie.

Also, if we don't count Uma Musume, all-female sports seem to be one of the most hated things anime. They always get extremely low scores and mostly negative reviews.

Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan is kinda a good recent example.

Either it's funny, or not funny.

@W3TFT It's pretty much the same with Asobi Asobase, Lucky☆Star, Nichijou, Plastic Neesan, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes, Teekyu, etc.

- Horror
- Slice of Life and especially the CGDCT and iyashikei subsets of Slice of Life (or even more extreme, both combined)
- Battle shounen/Nekketsu
- Sports
- Dementia (those under the former Dementia genre tag) & Avant-Garde/Experimental/Arthouse
- Gag comedy
- Kodomo
- Music (including Idols)
- Hentai
- Ecchi & Harem
- Yaoi & Yuri
- Probably Samurai as well. Not the broader whole genre of Historical. Just specifically Samurai

Not really a genre, but any anime with a weird art style kinda has this effect. Many people that like the art style or consider it passable will often like the story, but there is also a large group that will find it unbearable simply due to the art style. I guess Uzumaki would be a good recent example, at least as far as the first episode went...

dare I say, Slice Of Life, Most people will find it boring I think, compare it to US show genres, most people won't really be interested in daily lives that have no drama or suspense, look at the top anime and TV shows, you'll see what I mean. I love them though!

I think Devilman Crybaby is a hate it or love it anime. Judging by my friends list, it either get a high score around 8-9 or a a score under 6. I also didn't really like the anime even though other people loved it

You got it! Genres that typically fall into the "love it or hate it" category include:

Isekai anime truck Transporting characters to another world can bore viewers, depending on the execution and originality.

Harem and Reverse Harem: The repetitive tropes and often predictable plots can delight fans while frustrating others.

Ecchi: Its heavy reliance on fanservice makes it a divisive genre. Some enjoy the humor and cheekiness, while others find it off-putting.

Mecha: The intense focus on robots and military political themes can either thrill or alienate viewers.

Psychological: The deep, often disturbing themes can be a hit or miss, depending on the audience's taste for complex narratives..

I've been on both sides, it defends on the execution of the content rather than the genre itself

It has abstract art like Kaiji.
It has a surreal comedy like Asobi Asobase or Azumanga Daioh.
Or it gives you the impression of Nothing Happens like Sketchbook or Aria series.
Will 2025 be a good year?
