Do I misremember or was Cliff's backstory described differently in the LN?

I don't remember very well since I've read the LN like 7ish months ago, but iirc Cliff wasn't an adopted child who was taken in by the church. He's a legitimate grandson of the current Pope, no?

i didn't read the ln from the start but the manga at least is the same, if the ln is different then perhaps they adapted from the manga

You are correct on both counts. They faked him being taken in by the church so he wouldn't get assassinated or something while in Millis since he's the Pope's son.

he is the pope' grandson but they faked him as an adopted child to protect him ...
