At the very first episode Uzal stated that Clarion is similar to Nene so I initially assumed she was a cyborg like Nene, but then she does things that are clearly disimilar to Nene that I'm now confused.

To be precise she has "ownership" so she ends sup seemingly supservient to and is loyal to her "owner" namely Uzal then Nene. Then while Nene seems to sleep she instead goes into what seems to be a recharge and stand-by mode.

TL;DR: Cyborg or Android/Robot?

Clarion is like 100% machine I guess. While Nene was once a human. They both may be 90% similar physically.

Well, that's the plot right there. But yes, she seems to be an android robot, in a body akin to what you'd give a human who lost her body (Nene), and hence a true artificial intelligence capable of the same thoughts and even emotions as a human. Nene and Clarion's (love) story is also the story of how humans and AI can get along. Something like that.

Hmmm... I see, thanks for the replies, just for clarification though, is there a part in either the manga or anime where they say precisely what she is?

Not yet in what I've seen/read—it's a plot point.

In the most recent episode, Nene referred to both herself and Clarion as "human". So that would lead me to the assumption she's a full-cybord like Nene.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

Apart from Clarion's behavior, the only thing tipping me off is was when we first meet Takumi and she mentions that Clarion's international AI registration were fake in both the manga and anime.

It's mentioned by Uzal in episode 1 that Clarion is the "same" as Nene about 5 minutes in.

Also, In episode 8 (~9:40) Nene says:

She does seem kind of AI like, but maybe that has something to do with her past?

She's human. In chapter 1 of the manga and episode 1 anime Uzal says that she is the same as Nene. And Nene says that she's jealous of Clarin's cyborg body. That's when Uzal says Nene could have done the same thing.

Also the part where they were trying to escape the fire. Nene says they still have enough oxygen. Assuming that includes Clarion as well, it all matches up.

Her personality is just, Dandere. It's an anime trope. The one inside the labs might just be her clones, or body replacements.

Unless it's progammed into its system, it really shouldn't be possible for a simple android to do.

Yeah, it's programmed. I remember that Clarion told Nene that Uzal programmed it (why? "it's matter of taste")

She might've had part of her memory erased when she became a cyborg (but her having a normal human life before isn't specified, so I'm just bringing in another hypothesis to try and explain her past) because of brain damage. Basically amnesia. Then they had to preserve the brain so they added a robotic system to her brain

That's interesting idea. With her brain damaged she can feel less or more emotions (e.g. doesn't want to save people that are more likely to die, obsession with her ears)... and other things.

And sleeping probably isn't necessary for a full body cyborg, because sleep means to recharge your energy for all living creatures. I guess that Nene still has the idea of "sleeping during the night" which might not be necessary at all, since she is a full body cyborg. In fact, she just needs to be plugged in to an electrical source and 'recharge her battery'. This theory really did make sense once I really thought about it (I didn't spend my whole life on it, ok? Just 10 minutes) because unless a machine has a life-lasting battery a typical machine needs to be plugged in to SOMETHING

Then while Nene seems to sleep she instead goes into what seems to be a recharge and stand-by mode.

I have checked 9th episode - Nene felt asleep on the desk. When in bed, she doesn't have wires like Clarion. Maybe Nene has "Solar batteries"?

And if she was "human"... that makes her a slave, well, that's sick and I don't think this anime creator (or manga author) has courage to show such topics.

I think she is just a robot with "good AI", maybe little close to human's. I think Nene is just overreacting and calls a lots of things "human" (she heard from android with erased memory that android want to go home).

My guess is that Clarion is like a human mind downloaded into a robot, instead of having organic brain like Nene.
