My family is big so we draw lots to see who we're going to give a present to that year. This time around I got my brother. My brother wants a climbing rope. The cheapest rope around is $130. I was going to go in on it with my parents, but their car broke and they have to buy a new one so I'm on my own. I don't want to spend $130 on a christmas present, even for my beloved brother, but if I do then I'll be able to gank his rope when I want to go climbing. What should I do?

I don't claim to be an expert in these matters, but climbing rope doesn't strike me as something that you want to necessarily go discount on.

They all have to meet safety standards, so it's good. The thing you have to watch out for is used ropes. Even if it looks undamaged it could still be bad, because you never know if someone took a big fall on it.

If I were you, and I didn't have a job I'd try and get a quick job whether it's babysitting or shoveling snow (if it snows a lot where you live). You might be able to guy him the rope that way. OR just ask your friends to pitch in a little, or your siblings/family. If worst comes to worst, you could always just buy him another present that he wants.

Lucky me then. Presents in my family is pretty much my mother buying shit for me and my brother in order to decrease her fortune, thus lightening the inheritance fees we'll have to pay eventually.
She's quite considerate like that.
